Simcity 2013 already tried the MMO and failed miserably.  This type of game just isn't MMO friendly at all.  You'd need all player playing at the exact same time. If anyone leaves, then other cities get out of whack.  You can't really let the AI take over the person's city who left as then your city would get morphed into what the AI wants, not what you want or it would just burn to the ground.  And god forbid if someone abandons a city and you lose any/all support completely.

Even with Simcity's 2km x 2km cities, the game just ran too long and people left to never come back or just abandoned it.  It just takes too much time to build a city.

It's a great idea, just can't be executed.

there's was a multiplayer mod in the work, I didn't do any follow up, so just go search it up your self.

and, +1 I don't see any reason this game need to be a multiplayer game.

There's a reason Cities: Skylines isn't an MMO and that reason is because that aspect of SC2013 was received so poorly. Based on input I saw when that game released the vast majority of city builders just want to do their own thing.

I'm against any multiplayer mode for a city builder. However, I would like to see the ability for us to visit each other's cities as tourists paying Cim dollars that go into the banks of the host mayor and actually be able to see live visitors in real time travel in by train or plane and watch them roam around. We would then get bumper sticker icons in our profiles showing where we been and how many visits. Basically a great way to experience CJs. There are a few cities in the CJ section I would love to do a first person ride through. The most popular cities would get the most visitors and tourism would be a very effective part of the game. This would drive mayors to make some very interesting places.

Lol @2013, this is 2015 and this is a  better game than Simcity, some kind of interaction among players that are on, available, and playing is possible in some way, not MMO as in competitive gameplay. I used to play alot of COD on xbox, my VS gaming has taken a back seat.

Both Cities XL and Simcity tried and failed.

I believe some online interaction is possible, but it should be a "side" mode and more of a player-to-player thing (Cities in Motion 2 like) than having the gameplay wholly revolve around it and maintaining expensive servers.

Most people really like to do their own thing, but a MMO aspect of cooperative building and simply sharing cities together might be interesting - but not a priority or a gameplay focus at all, no.

As long as it's not the focus and it doesn't have an effect on the single-player experience then it's fine by me.

    Not necessarily an MMO...

But they could rip this version of Simcity off:

    sim2net.gif

SimCity 2000 Network Edition, sometimes unofficially referred to as the "Gold Edition", was released in 1996 for Windows only. The game featured slightly different gameplay in network mode, where mayors may start with more money, but must buy land before building upon it. Players of the Network edition had the ability to share in-game resources and to compete or cooperate with other cities.

This version also features a revamped user interface. Instead of a static toolbar, items are accessed via cascading menus from the right of the screen, resulting in more screen real-estate for SimCity itself, without sacrificing functionality.

    From Wiki

I wouldn't mind paying with friends, while still retaining control over my city.

I don't see what is wrong with having a separate multiplayer mode while keeping single player mode. I agree with rmjohnson regarding the problems due to the nature of the game, it will take some creative problem solving.

I'd be pretty happy if someone else was building on the tiles I didnt buy, and I could just access those tiles someone else is building on in read only mode.

Perhaps online maps would be locked on slowest speed, and are always online... Your cims could goto work in your friends city, work in their industry etc.
