    San Francisco

    Downtown

San Francisco is at once a modern day city and a town that is steeped in Old World charm. The famous cable cars gliding along the rolling hills and the Golden Gate Bridge have become major representatives of this ?City by the Bay?. Since the days of the Gold Rush people have flocked to San Francisco in search of opportunity and success. During the 1960?s the city was bursting with flower children that were in search of peace, love and happiness. Some of the most important music created during that time came out of San Francisco. Today the city is a major tourist destination for anyone traveling to the west coast of the United States. San Francisco is absolutely exploding with culture, shopping and dining. It is a city that is easy to fall in love with whether your trip carries you there on business or for pleasure.

If San Francisco has a little bit of something for visitors, then Pier 39 has something for everyone who's already there. With 110 retail shops, 11 restaurants with great views of San Francisco Bay, Pier 39 also has a carousel, underwater park, a 300-berth marina, old style arcade and even a movie theater. People flock to Pier 39. The Pier has been named by local and national newspapers as one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States, and even the world by the London Observer in 1992. Built in 1977 with antique wood from older San Francisco piers, Pier 39 is a 45-acre site that earns well over $100 million each year in retail sales.

    Fishermen's Wharf

    fishermans-wharf-sign.jpg

The Wharf began back in the Gold Rush days when Chinese immigrants in junks fished offshore and provided shrimp, oysters, and salmon to feed the hordes of Gold Rushers. Italian fishermen came next, and they set up stands along the beach to sell crab, shrimp, oysters, and other seafood. Seafood restaurants bearing Italian names still dominate the seafood business along the Wharf, and the fishing boats still occupy some of the waterfront at the Wharf. But the popularity of the seafood, the views of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge, and the location turned the Fisherman's Wharf area in to an area filled with tourist attractions of all types -- shopping, sightseeing, museums, amusement places of various types, and fine restaurants. Pier 39 is perhaps the best-known area for shops and restaurants along the waterfront. Ferries to Alcatraz leave from Pier 41. Pier 45 is the home of Musee Mecanique and its wonderful collection of vintage arcade games and toys, the Museum of the City of San Francisco, and the USS Pampanito submarine museum. Popular areas nearby are The Cannery, Ghirardelli Square, and Anchorage Center.

There's no mistaking the colossal Civic Center, with its mammoth classical buildings arranged around two vast plazas. Home to the opera, symphony, and most of San Francisco's major theater, the district is grandest at night, when beautifully lit flags and fountains flank bumper-to-bumper limousine traffic.

Amazing!!! I love South San Francisco and that story about the store argument is cool. You even got a police car to come to the scene. Also, I have learned so much about San Francisco from this CJ. That little paragraph about the history of San Francisco is great. I didn't know about Fisherman's Wharf. Now that I do I will definetely visit it when I go to San Francisco. I been to South Street Fish Market in New York, but Fisherman's Wharf looks much as good, or even cooler then the Fish market in NYC. I really love the downtown area. It looks so realistic. Please post more photos of the downtown skyscrapers in the day too.
Also get some closeups of Alcatraz. Man this CJ is awesome. It makes me want to visit San Francisco so much!!! I can't wait for more updates.44.gif44.gif

    Downtown San Francisco

    Coit
The Coit Tower sits atop Telegraph Hill, it is 210 feet tall. The tower was built with funds left to the city by Lillie Hitchcock Coit.

Coit Tower was built in 1933 as a memorial to San Francisco's fire fighters that fought the fires during the earthquake in 1906. Some of my friends say that the tower looks like the nozzle on a fire hose. Coit Tower is open daily from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm.

    Inside

Inside Coit Tower the lobby has murals painted during the Depression, a gift shop, and a elevator that takes you to the top of the tower.

The murals are colorful and show what life was like during the 1930's. They are painted on every wall in the circular lobby that surrounds the gift shop and the elevator.

    Coit
    ^^^^^^
This section of the mural shows what downtown life was like in the 1930's. It is not much different today, most of the old buildings are still there, the cable cars and trolleys are still running, and the streets are still full of people.

    Lombard Street

This street is known as the Crookedest Street in the world. It is a lot steeper than it looks, and it zig zags back and forth for one block. Now let's climb back up the hill!

    Alcatraz Island

    Alcatraz

Alcatraz Island was better known as The Rock by former inmate prisoners who were imprisoned there. When the island was discovered by Juan Manuel Ayala in 1775 it was named Pelican Island because of the many pelicans that migrate there. The island is still a sanctuary for many birds.

If you want to take the Alcatraz tour when you come to San Francisco you need to make your reservations three days in advance. You need to be at Pier 41 twenty minutes before the boat departs to board. They will take your groups picture when you get on the boat, but if you don't want to purchase the picture then take your own after you return from Alcatraz.

    Messages

When you approach the island you can see messages left by the Indians, they reclaimed the island after the prison closed in 1963. In 1972 it became a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Many people have said that they would like to make the island a large gambling casino.

Many People have swam from Alcatraz since the prison closed, and that the bodies of the escapes were never found.

    Now to downtown we go!

SC421.gif...If Maxis HQ were/are in the Bay Area...Why did they make the game so tricky so that we cant recreate SF?...We cant make anything close to Lombard Street because the game does not allow it..Nor we can build in hills because we get those weird blocks under every building3.gif...
Anyway..Great Job Mex!!44.gif Those pics of The Coit Tower(SC4 version) are really cool!!
And I remember me and my friends trying to drive through Lombard Street18.gif..

SBC Park opened in 2000 as Pacific Bell Park. By far the most breathtaking of the 18 major league ballparks that have opened since 1989, it glories in its tight perch between a big city and a wide-open bay. Not only do you get to cheer on the Giants (and maybe see a right-field homer make a splash), but the bleacher seats come with fabulous views of the game, the city, and the Bay.

Traffic, both mechanized and pedestrian, moves along the Embarcadero. The oppressive freeway which once overshadowed this splendid waterfront boulevard is now only a memory.
