Industrial Traffic

Does anyone know if the industrial traffic travels a certain way?

In SC4 I always keep in mind that the industrial traffic will go to the nearest exit out the city so I plan my roads and zones accordingly. Before having that knowledge I had serious traffic problems from trucks clogging up the roads. I also use the "NO TRUCKS" mod to block them from entering certain roads. Industrial traffic was a major culprit in my old traffic jams. So I'm wondering is there anything to consider in Cities Skylines regarding this?

Your industry will drive to your commercial sector to provide them with the goods they produce.  They will also seek to interact with the outside world.  You can also set districts in the game to prevent heavy traffic so that trucks will not come in the areas where you dictate no heavy traffic.

Depends on the type of the industry as well.

Generic industry has 70% trucks coming in form the region bringing in the raw resources (if you have no specialized industry) 25% exporting trucks that go out into the region and maybe 5% that deliver to your shops.

If you do have specialized industry then their trucks will go to your generic industry and fewer will come to generic from the region. You specialized will probably also export the the region.

Does the industry use heavy trucks to deliver to shops? Do the hotdog and donut vans count as "heavy traffic"?

Basically if you ban heavy traffic in an area with shops will they still be able to get deliveries? I banned heavy traffic in a part of my city and the commercial is still running fine. Just curious if the game makes an exception to heavy traffic that's delivering to a destination in the "No trucks" zone and simply bans "thru-traffic" or if the delivery trucks don't count as heavy traffic.

Might explain why some people have issues with their coal or oil powerplants being restocked with fuel. Because I'm sure the ore and oil truck most definitely count as "heavy traffic". So you will have problems if you place a powerplant in a district with a truck ban.

Nope, the deliveries to the stores are done with vans. The heavy traffic is for imports/exports, and the moving of specialized industry goods to the generic industry. I would guess that ore and oil trucks count as heavy as well yes.

You can use cargo stations and harbours to export/import your goods too, follow some of the delivery vehicles around and see where they come from and are going, observation of traffic movements is key to ensuring the road networks can handle sufficient volumes. By and large Industry either exports, imports or distributes goods, imports/exports can be handled by dropping the cargo off at a cargo terminal for rail or the cargo harbour, delivery of goods to shops can come from these distribution centres too. Unlike SC4 where cargo is simply exported then "disappears", in Skylines it's a commodity requiring sufficient supply/demand to balance your economy and support growth.

Choosing a decent place to put the cargo train station is a challange as well. There would be very heavy traffic entering and exiting the stations which they only queue up on the rightmost lane. The queue always clog up the whole traffic network inside the industrial areas, causing buses, oil trucks and garbage trucks getting stuck.

1. trucks came from outside the city

- You can mark your road with district tool and select High Traffic Ban, this will not allow any heavy vehicle travel to the area. Make sure you have an alternate rout for trucks to get to your Industrial.

- Build a cargo train/ship also helps (plus some industrial product also imported from the outside via those transportation.

- Always use 3 lane avenue for industrial.

-Try not to use buses, use metro, in fact if you have extra upkeep to spare, mark your residents policy for free public transport.

- Shortcuts - pedestrian path.

2. Built office instead. (if you have uni around and lots of high educated citizens.)

Great info everyone. So far in my first city I have the industrial zones right near the highway. The residents are more inland but anyone who need to get out the district have to pass through the industrial zones and I don't have avenues yet. I have to rethink my design.
