Lowering land without demolishing everything

Hi again

I just stumbled upon this plugin to make nicer harbors and waterfronts: https://www.sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1700

Unfortunately my entire region's land level is way to high.

My land level is, as you can see on the left, to high for the plugin to work proper. There's an actual gap between water and concrete.

I'd prefer land level being more like the right side, ultimately even lower.

I have this issue in my entire region. (all cost area's)

Is there a way to modify a map - lowering all land areas without destroying everything?

I don't mind a few buildings being demolished in the process, but I'd like to avoid having the 5 million residents region totally broken. '

EDIT:
How about stuff like landscape designer?

Thanks in advance

Sincerely

Naggert

I don't think there is a way without destroying everything.  My suggestion to you is make a backup copy of the region.  Use the landscape designer as you suggested to see if the terrain can be lowered.  If it doesn't work then just restore you region from the backup and try something else.  Never hurts to try (as long as you have the backup).

There is indeed a way to manipulate the terrain without destroying anything developed on it: the SC4Terraformer. But you won't be happy with the outcome. While the terrain can be lowered, objects being built on it won't change height with the terrain. They stay right where they are, leaving them hanging in the air at exactly the same height as before. This is how I recently built FAR highway and curved 'bridges'. ( is an explanation of the trick). Contrary to your problem, I wanted to lower the terrain without lowering the development built on it.

So yes, you can, but unfortunately it will do you no good.

As this concerns your whole region, I would just raise the sea level by a few meters.

Here is the effect of raising sea level by 30 meters (click for larger versions). Disregard the trees, they were not in the save file.

If you look closely, you can still see the buildings under water. The edge of the self-leveling docks is defined as being on water level, so that's why that strip went up with the water level.

The place to do this permanently would be your terrain mod. In the Appalachian one you would find the value in LK_AppalachianTerrain_Snow_Jagged_Coast.dat or similar, depending on which conditions you chose.

Hm, and this is located in the game folder?

Oh, you use that mod? The file is in the zzz_terrain folder. The name of the file depends on your choices regarding snowline and erosion. When you open the file in the reader, the "SeaLevel" entry is in the larger exemplar file.

Your image looked more like default Maxis to me. In that case, you probably just need to make your own little mod with just that one line.

Good luck with this.  If you just want sea port effects, it is probably the best solution.  Generally speaking anything that modifies the existing terrain causes a force 10 earthquake (as it should) but raising the sea level should simply be a natural phenomenon.  If you are doing a CJ, you can blame it on global warming.

Eh, sorry? No I'm not using any terrain altering mods. are you talking about this? https://www.sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=2753

Thought as much. You don't really need any terrain mod for completely flat tiles.

Your best option would be to download something like this:

The file looks big, but that's because of pics. The actual mod is 1kb. Just take any of the mod files in there, take iLives Reader and set sea level to something you want. Default is 250, so 270 would be 20 meters higher. Rename the file to something suitable. Takes about a minute. With 20 meters and without terrain mod, the scene from above looks like this:
