Well, I don't have anything special, but one of my regions are roughly(sp?) based on a plan for a fantasy island of mine. In Southport, a city just south of the capital with the second-largest ferryport, these two highways meet. The top-bottom one, the M2's main job is to link the two main ferryports (the other one is in the city of Harnham, based on a cross between Blackpool and Manchester, and mostly serves the UK) and so this road is popular with tourism and people driving 'through' my island. The other one, the M6 goes from the west to Kettering on the east, via the south coast. This junction marks the south-eastern corner of the capital, so the M2 runs along the east with an exit to the centre, and the M6 runs along the south. The M1 finishes it off by going from the south-western corner to the north-western number. It then shares road with the M2 and M6 to give my capital a proper outer ring road, even if for most of it one road has two numbers!

Anyway, sorry for gibbering on, here's the junction (sorry about the colours). It's nothing special but does the job, the top-left is meant to resemble a service area, Trigh Corner, (well the real ones have silly names!), strategically(sp?) placed to serve the two motorways.

Here's a turbine interchange:

Here's a take-off on the idea:

NE-Jan-1.png

Then I decided that looked too much like a swastika, so I tried a couple other ones

before settling on a regular NAM stack. (not pictured)

Here's a nifty take-off on an Echelon interchange:

and from a different angle-

Hopefully I didn't mess everything up and make a post full of red X's

Please tell me what you think.  That round-about is right near a freeway exit and gets tons of traffic.  There used to be a triangular intersection that wasnt cutting it.   My commuter trains seem to be pretty popular too.

Wow, those are some seroius mindblowing layouts!

-edit-

This isn't spectaular but it is the most 'transporty' layout i have in my region. The city of Bently is a passage-way  between my two major cities Moskau and Serbiadon; it has the most motorways of all my cities... wich isn't much, about 5 or 6. This is the the only part iv'e not built on... partially because theres very limited space.

damn, there is some awesome stuff in here...

aleking: thats really amazing. it looks like a real test in patience laying zones like that esp with simcity's moody zoning system. i can never sit still and build stuff like that even when i try.

haljackey: geez, those highways/avenues look like they could really move a ton of sims.

capitol:not bad, your getting the hang of it.

mightygoose: cool. you could build a huge city around that and it would still function. those are some heavy duty roads.

EDIT: Found out my problem...lolquote>

Okay, where should I start?

This was the hardest interchange for me to create. EVER.  That picture was taken from a side angle.  I made it myself using ground and elevated highways, the rural highways, one way roads, a series of tunnelsand bridges, various transitions and a collector/express system.

The design specks:

-A full, intergrated interchange serving two perpendicular freeways, the horizontal having a collector express setup.

-Collector lanes would bury under the interchange after connecting to their express counterparts as a means to save room on the ground.  Having a multi-level interchange is an eyesore for every big city, so some of the levels would be buried

-A full stack interchange with the veritical highway with the express lanes would be most direct way to create good ramps

-No weaving whatsoever

-all other networks would have a way to bypass this interchange.

-horizontal highway would be 12-14 lanes west of the interchange, 10-14 lanes east

-vertical highway would be 6 lanes throughout the interchange, but widened to 10 for multilane ramp extensions

-Bridges crossing the crossings river both east and south of the interchange

-A virety of walls with props and a scenic landscape would butify the interchange and help it to blend in with the city.

The early stages.  The horizontal freeway carries 12 lanes of traffic before expanding west of the interchange

img301/4579/crossingsjul24311151351618mediumnp7.png

East of the interchange, the 10 lane horizontal highway connects to itself in a "basketweave" interchange to allow transitions between the collector and express lanes.

img19/6075/crossingsjun10261151348829mediumos9.png

The heart of the interchange.  The collector lanes bury to allow for more acessability of connection ramps.  The vertical freeway connects to both the collector and express lanes of the horizontal highway as they meet at the tunnels.

img291/7523/crossingsaug111041154907222mediumsmalljb6.png

The interchange viewed from afar.  The vertical highway crosses the crossings river south of the interchange and heads northbound into the central business district.

img111/6615/crossingsfeb51591156261342mediumrh0.png

East of the interchange, the horizontal interchange also crosses the corssings river between the interchange and its basketweave.

img206/3981/crossingsfeb61591156261357mediumlg9.png

Here we see the 10 lane, multistructure bridge crossing the river before much of the area developed.

img113/5583/crossingsjun10261151348846mediumyr3.png

Just south of the interchage, the collector lanes bury themselves so stacked ramps can run along the surface.  3 ramps gush out of the vertical highway here to connect to the various directions and devisions of the horizontal highway.  Note the proper use of signage.

img113/6043/crossingsmar10001150556857mediumjn4.png

North of the interchange, a similar design is used.  This is what it looked like before the area biult up.

img159/4302/crossingsmar10001150556900mediumko5.png

Here, at the grand opening of the interchange, the high mast lighting waits to be turned on by the mayor.  Notice the differeces between this and the current interchange.  The bridges had to be reworked and a ramp modification and extention in the northwest section have not been biult yet.  They replaced what is seen in this quadrent.

img159/8695/crossingsmar10001150556982mediumif3.png

Here is the opening of the basketweave.  The ramps and slope also had to be reworked to meet future traffic needs.

img162/7320/crossingsmar10001150565217mediumdl5.png

This is a far shot of the interchange a few years ago.  Note how biult up the area has become and how much that interchange must be used.

img171/7831/crossingsmar251591156261749mediumxd3.png

Evening rush hour.  This bridge is often bottlenecked because it is the only 10 lane section on the horizontal highway.  The rest of the highway is 12 or more lanes.

img171/3531/crossingsoct23821153420026mediumwo4.png

A view of the central business district north of the interchange.  Note how well the vertical highway transfers into this area via multiple ramps with proper signage.

Wow, thats crazy with steep inclines.  I like it!

Heres some shots of a new highway network running through the newest area of my region.  This will be a bedroom community, so the highway ts being beefed up to 10-12 lanes to handle through traffic to the downtown core.

img129/1793/ultimatebeachfeb7001158374618mediumnx2.png

A new idea: a loacal express syetem is added to the highway.  Unlike the collector/express syetem in my prevoius post, local lanes serve the immedate community but are still highways, not frontage roads.

img167/2117/ultimatebeachfeb7001158374649mediumbf3.png

This is the start of the local/express system through this area.  It has 3 lanes to serve through traffic and two seperate lanes to serve local exits, easing rthe congestion this highway will have to handle once the area develops.

img119/2671/ultimatebeachfeb7001158375758mediumqr9.png

This is the grand opening of the new system.  Traffic is now light, but will stradially increase once the biuldings rise.  You can see here how the express lanes totally bypass this interchange.

img167/8560/ultimatebeachfeb7001158375897mediummv8.png
This is just somthing cool that I made.  Because cloverleafs/stacks are straight, I needed to do a little work in order to make a highway turn through this unique interchange.  The turn of the highway was not in the proper spot to place a orth/diag NAM interchange, so I had to be creative.

img167/4752/ultimatebeachfeb12001158376882mediumzh7.png
Here you can see traffic already bottlenecked in this lightly developed area.  This will be the next spot to have upgrades, widening and expanding the highway and the interchanges to handle 8-10 lanes rather than the 4-6 seen here.
