An incomplete list I started some time ago and am constantly updating as I discover news songs and feel differently about other ones. These are my top 10 favorite songs for every year, from 1955 through 2014. Again - it's still incomplete. Well, I graduated from high-school in 1955, so I assume we are of an age.

Pop music doesn't produce much memorable for me because much of it doesn't stand the test of time.  However:

Anything by Edith Piaf

Most of Frank Sinatra

Schmaltz with Bing Crosby and others of his ilk.

I have to say that the n men in a garage genre of pop music doesn't attract me, even today.

My taste in music tends to lie between the 17th and 20th century, but mostly in the classical idioms even though many were pop in their time.  I have yet to hear any 21st century music that I would not classify as noise.  The lack of good tune smiths recently might mean a flash back to earlier times.

At one time I rather enjoyed the Neapolitan Street Songs by De Curtis and others.  I still like O Sole Mio and Mattinata.

I haven't heard a memorable song in the popular genre for quite some time.  I suspect that it is because I simply don't care.

The teacher opens the door but the student must enter himself. - Ancient Chinese Saying

Some of the songs of the list are already regarded as classics of music. Proud Mary from CCR, Hit the Road, Jack, Superstition, to name a few... People of my generation keep listening to these songs (I have them on my library) and keep covering them; they became timeless. Some of the 90s and early 2000s songs on this list are already on the way of becoming classics, as they are still played on any hits radio station.

I have the hope that some of the songs produced from the mid-1990s in advance on your list will also become timeless classics that my descendants will listen to. Lose Yourself, Violent Pornography, Song 2, Blurred Lines... They're part of the soundtrack of my life, would be proud if my son and my grandson enjoyed of them.

If people make these lists, they are not automatically that age. I'm born in 1992, but I do like quite some music from the two decades before my birthdate. I still think that "Shine On, You Crazy Diamond" from Pink Floyd is the best song ever made after WW2.

I also have a weak spot for the 90s. Now, every era knows its bad music, but the 90s was an era of lots of happy cheesy music with eurodance. But it was gloriously cheesy, and the music is still fun and energetic. Look up for instance Dune, 2 Unlimited and 2 Brothers on the 4th Floor. It's not the best music there was at that time, but it was (and still is) a lot of fun.

I have the feeling that even some tracks produced nowadays can be classics. It's not a whole lot, but they are there. There are just some tracks that will stick around. I think the following tracks have quite a chance to become classics:

  • Pharell Williams - Happy (probably this will be a typical evergreen track)
  • Adele - Rolling in the Deep
  • Adele - Someone Like You
  • Daft Punk - Get Lucky

Best,

Maarten

All a matter of personal taste. I say there is so much great music to be heard though. Based on what you tell me, you might like some of Philip Glass's compositions - he is largely regarded as the Mozart of our time. I like his minimalist pieces from the 80's the most, be he considers himself to be a classicist, reflected in his recent work. Give him a listen if you can get around to it.

Same here - born in 1992 as well. Probably my favorite period in music in general was roughly from 1964 through 1987. For the more recent years, my list will definitely grow as time goes on. There could very well be music that I like that came out this year (2014) that I won't discover for at least another couple of years, for all I know. The tracks you listed are likely to be well-regarded for years to come.

Sorry, I change my mind. Ignore this.

I can take Glass or leave him alone.  If I had to choose between him an Aaron Copeland, I'd take Copeland.  In that group I also am partial to Leonard Bernstein, so as you say, tastes differ.

I also like several things that were out before I was born that were popular with my parents.  For example: My Gal Sal.  Which was recorded later on by the Everly Brothers.  And some of the old Victrola recordings that my father had like Down By the Vinegar Works.  You'd be surprised the things that stick to one from the days of radio, especially advertising jingles and classical pieces that were used in popular serials like Liszt's Preludes which were used on The Lone Ranger.

Another strange thing about me, as far as many are concerned, is that I don't listen to pop channels and I am not particularly attracted to the music in current commercials.  One of the milk substitute commercials is using Zadoc the Priest, which is a coronation anthem by Handel.  We are not amused.

    Dear sir/madam/whoever will read this!

    This profile is now defunct.

Computer problems and issues with accessing my Imageshack account meant My SC4 CJ Scrapbook was lost and utterly irretrievable. This setback put me off SC4 for many months.

Apologies for the inconvenience and for the lost pictures.

But that SC4 itch did not go away and it had to be scratched! I have started afresh with a new account here- The British Sausage

The URS is a spiritual successor to the SC4 CJ Scrapbook.

With this update this will be the last time I visit my original Simtropolis account- admin/mods feel free to remove it or do whatever you need to do. I have no further use for the Ln X (BLANKBLANK) account.

With regards, Miles Saunders-Priem aka. Ln X aka. The British Sausage

Sting is right.  Current music using the well-tempered scale comes mostly from good ol' JSB.  Any musician worth his salt has played from at least one of Bach's books of musical essays.

I wanted to include a note at the top of the post that says a few of these songs may be off by one year (but I didn't think anybody would notice  ). This is because sometimes the single in question was released either a year after or before the album, so I do have a few of them that are off like that. In fact, I think the Eagles song Life In the Fast Lane actually came out in 1976 on their Hotel California album, rather than 1977 as I listed. I've been thrown off by when the songs chart on the Billboard Hot 100 as well, usually a year after the song was actually released. Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1970, so that's why I got that mixed up. I have some correcting to do, but with over 5000 songs in my iTunes library..... ^_^

    2000:

Never Let You Go - Third Eye Blind

This is the most well known song off of Blue, though I am firmly of the opinion that "Deep Inside of You" is a better song and doesn't deserve to play second fiddle to "Never Let You Go".

Also, that album came out in 1999, so you have this categorized under the wrong year. :read:

I have the hope that some of the songs produced from the mid-1990s in advance on your list will also become timeless classics that my descendants will listen to. Lose Yourself, Violent Pornography, Song 2, Blurred Lines... They're part of the soundtrack of my life, would be proud if my son and my grandson enjoyed of them.

Eminiem is a legend and will be remembered as one. So "Lose Yourself" is a safe qualifier for classic. System of a Down will be well remembered as well, but their most well known song is and always will be "Chop Suey". "Violent Pornography" will likely be relatively unknown by people who aren't specifically into the band. "Song 2" is a great song and very iconic of the late 90s, but I see it fading into relative obscurity. It kind of already has. Ask anyone born 1995 or later whether they've ever heard this song and I feel you're going to get mostly "no" as an answer.

As for "Blurred Lines", it remains to be seen how well remembered it will be, but I seriously hope that rubbish is never considered "classic". It's a song about how rape is cool, and it's not even a well-written song. NO.

If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.

The songs I posted are just mere quick examples; don't get them as "these songs and no other". There are many other 2000s and 2010s great songs on iLoveMusic's list that can achieve the "classic" status I was saying in my post. Of course System of a Down will never play in a mainstream radio 20 years from now (it hardly plays in a mainstream radio nowadays), but this song is one of the songs on my life's OST.

@Alejandro24: That awkward moment when you see in the same music list La Oreja de Van Gogh and Die Krupps.

Someone is always going to notice, especially those who grew up listening to the radio on a daily basis, like me for instance. ;)

I always list the year the song was in heavy rotation on radio, never by the albums release date.  For instance, the Wall was released in late '79, yet Another Brick In The Wall  Pt.II was not played on radio until around Feb '80.  Another example is I Wanna Hold Your Hand from the Beatles didn't get airplay until early '64 and was one of the biggest hits from 1964 with 7 weeks logged in at number uno in the spring of that year.

One other thing I noticed in your list, you're the only other person I know that liked Turn Me Loose by Loverboy from 1981.  Was my favorite song that year and is still one of my favorites some 30+ years later.  Good choice.

Almost forgot, 1960 had another great song that was missing from your list, House Of The Rising Sun by the Animals whom CCR borrowed the style of their music from.  A lot of CCR's tunes have the similar swampy sound to them.

I know that this is all opinion, but based on what you listen to there are a few genuinely surprising omissions:

New Radicals - You Get What You Give
    Sonic Youth - Schizophenia
Soundgarden - Either Black Hole Sun, Superunknown or Burden in my Hand
    R. E. M. - Everybody Hurts

Might have to do my list soon.

I have something to ask you, since you were around then - for those songs in the 1950s and early 60s, do any of those on my list ring a bell to you? Do you remember hearing them at the time, and if so - what did you think of them?

Sorry, I change my mind. Ignore this.

    Well, since you ask,

1955 (The year I finished high school)

Only Ya Ya by Lee Dorsey doesn't produce the tune and lyrics in my mind

Of the rest up to about 1975 they are all familiar, but you have to realize that at that time I was doing some serious career building and spent a lot of time in aircraft and cities around the continent.  After that, I turned my musical attention to the more serious side of things, particularly vocal and keyboard music from 1600 to the current era (about 1980).

I hear the pop genre now, but it doesn't sink in.
