Welcome to Around the Roses!

IMGP3743.JPG

This front page was last updated on: September 17, 2007

We're proud to continue to produce many of the landmarks of the Rose City!  The goal here is to produce accurately as many real-life buildings in the Portland, Oregon metro area as possible. Although the scope of this project right now covers the city of Portland only right now,  we hope to branch out into other areas of the metro area (Beaverton, Oregon City, Gresham, etc..) in the near-future. If time permits and there is interest in BATing something in particular,  this project may eventually cover all of Oregon, Vancouver and Southwest Washington State, and perhaps other areas in the Pacific Northwest.

This project is open to anyone wishing to join from Portland, or even beyond! There's a lot to cover and a team effort is always a great thing! I have, or can get, 1000's of detailed pictures of stuff in Portland for you to use.

Please Scroll down farther for a list of completed projects and where to get them.

Looking good guys.  If I can ever get away from my New York and Kuala Lumpur trips I'll help you out 2.gif.  I have been wanting to do some hometown buildings for quite a while now, but other projects have kept me away.

Hi... I'm from Portland... actually Clackamas atm... and am also a big fan of SC4. I'd like to help in any way possible, although I am not an artist so I really can't do much with the BATs... but maybe I can give some ideas or something.

I also have a pretty good (and pretty accurately sized) greyscale bmp of Portland for use with SC4 if anyone needs it... I just have to remember that upload site I use :).

Hmm... I was thinking... can you make different colleges/universities? It would be great to have PSU, University of Portland, Reed College, etc.

My main problem with SC4 is that you cannot place diagonal lots... it makes it difficult to make downtown accurately, or areas along Foster & Sandy... or Ladd Circle... etc.

Oh well, I think that's it for now.

Hi sorry for the delay in responding, been a bit busy moving (and will be for a little bit still).

@JtPortland: The WFC looks really good! I was thinking of doing the entire complex (skybridge and squat building attached over 4th Ave). However, if you want to add those later, I'd be glad to model it. Just got to take a look at where I left off on Waddle's and it doesn't look like it'll be too long before its ready for texturing.

I'll add your previous projects to the list since we've been collaborating on Portland stuff for some time now.

@Portlandexpos04: The Wells Fargo sign is there at the base. If you'd like, I have a great photo of it that I can dig up...

Rubick3: Your participation in this project will be very much appreciated! You're a very tallented BATer. We need all the help I can get on all this stuff. Basicly, I'm only good at modeling and lot stuff. I can also grab as many photos of stuff as detailed as you may need (provided I can get there by transit). Let me know when you're interested in some PDX BATing ...

@Mallow: I may actually call on you, since you're in Clacakams County. I'm thinking about doing some of the commercial architecture out there and the OC Elevator and the End of the Oregon Train Interpetive Center. I'll need pics and I don't get down there too often. Those are really far off, but I'll keep you up in mind for scouting trips or what-not if you are willing to do that...

@EchoofGhecko: The KPTV 12 studios that are by OMSI right? That's now owned by the Portland Opera. KPTV was consolidated with KPDX out in Beaverton when Meridith Broadcasting bought channel 12 (although it all ready owned 49).

Keep watching. Gotta move and clean, etc... all those fun moving projects...

Portlandexpos04, its too bad about DC getting the Expos. Truely a loss for our city! And we lose out on a new ballpark. 7.gif

Still working on getting things situated....

yeah sparky, i guess my username is no good anymore lol.
anyways, i was kind of expecting this to happen, it would've really been a pleasant suprise to land the expos, but DC is a bigger market, and MLB wanted them there... so in all reality it was always theirs to lose. Pretty cool to have baseball back in our nations capital and i wish they do well.

In the long run, i'm holding out hope that this may actually be a blessing in disguise for Portland, and we can land a better team... afterall the stadium financing is still in place and is essentially an offer to whoever wants to move here. And now that the bigger market DC got theirs, we're next as far as market size and all goes.

would love to see the Rose Diamond get built.

Cool, I think I could spare some time on the weekends going out to Oregon City... I actually live in Carver, if you know where that is... kind of on the way to Estacada, but not nearly as far east.

I have also lived in Lents, and SE Portland near Flavel and 72nd... and am quite familiar with Milwaukie... even though there's really nothing in Milwaukie 1.gif.

If ya ever need me, just ask... some day I'll probably reply. 3.gif

OK... Some progress to report on the individual BAT projects. I guess you can say I've resumed with a vengance!

Waddle's Diner: I'm still working on the lettering on the neon signs.. I had to actually thicken the raised borders around the neon tube lettering. As soon as all the lettering is done (I have to hand draw the signs due to the quirky font they used), I can add roof junk, gutters, et al...

    Progress pic:

    waddlessign.jpg

Fox Tower: This is a building that has given me some trouble due to it's odd curving shape and intricate lattice. However, I have had some success with it today.

    Real-life tower pic:

    foxtower.jpg

    Shaping guide model:

    fox-revised.jpg

    front squared-off section lattice work:

    foxlattice.jpg

Now to get to figuring out how to make curved surface lattices...

Will post more stuff when progress warrants it...

Now I travel through Portland all the time... I live in Carver, and work in Beaverton. For the past three days, I have had a chance to get a good look at that Fox Tower, and I'd have to say you are doing an excellent job on it. Keep up the good work.

Time for more fun with the Fox Tower...I've been rather relentless with this one lately. For starters, I've mastered the curving part of the building. Starting from the top, I've begun to flesh the tower out, working towards the base. My computer is lagging due to all the detail now. I've got the southeast side of the building built down to a sufficient level (the rest of it will come once I begin the base). Next is to get the rest of the tower walls pulled down, and to carve out a small notch in the uppermost part of the curved bit.

    Here's 2 pics of what's going on:

    fox-ext1.jpg

The lattice that appears to be empty is just the back of the building. The surfaces don't render, since I set up Rhino3d not to render backfaces. Also, there are some gaps which I will fill in once I get all the parts properly positioned again (had to disassemble it earlier so I could reduce polys).

Here's some detail of the windows and mullion lattice:

    windowdetail-fox.jpg

The non-window parts, in real life, aren't depressed on the tan section. They are panels with slight creases between them visible only up-close. Since the window mullions are white, I just extended them down (but made them thinner) to accomplish what hopefully will be a neat visual trick (and save time on texturing cause I suck at it).

Speaking of texturing, been trying to figure out just how to texture Waddle's.40.gif It's got (or should I say had 8.gif)a sort-of painted over wood vertical panel facade... Any ideas JT?

Enjoy! Comments appreciated as always. Thanks everyone and keep posting!

    Oh and some quick questions:

SergeantCm, how do you add pictures to your sig line and how do you make tables show up in posts? I've had quite a bit of trouble with this lately.

Is there any really really good tuturials on texturing and lighting? I should learn how to do these.

    quote>

Adding a picture to your sig line is just simple HTML.  Here's the HTML for mine, you should be able to figure out which is the link, which is the image.  The width and height tags can also be modified.  Keep in mind that Simtropolis has a strict policy on signature images, the maximum size is 300 pixels wide x 50 pixels high.  And finally, if you notice that my picture changes periodically, that's just me.  I created 6 separate signature images, and I just rename one to fit the link.

    <p><a href=https://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=50629><img src=http://home.comcast.net/~sargeantcm/obw/sigs/obwsig.jpg width=274 height=50></a></p>

As for the charts, the normal HTML chart language is disabled on these forums.  The method I prefer is to create my chart in Excel (which I find easier to do anyways) and then use Excel's camera tool and place the picture somewhere in the sheet.  You can access the camera tool by right-clicking on a toolbar and selecting customize, and under the Commands tab, Categories section, select Tools and you'll find Camera about near the bottom of the list on the right.  Then just drag that onto your toolbars as you normally would any other tool.

To use it, click the tool's icon, select the range of cells you'd like to picture, and then you'll define the area somewhere on the sheet to place the picture, dragging from top left to bottom right.  This is an interactive picture, when you change the contents of your chart in any way (contents, formatting, etc.), the picture will update.  Then you can simply click on the picture, issue a copy and paste it into Paint or Photoshop or whatever.  I prefer this method to a simple screendump because you don't need to do any image editing or cropping, all you may need to do is shrink the picture to a smaller yet readable size.

    Hopefully that's not too long-winded...

    -Chris

    Sparky: do you have Photoshop?

Just search for a texture of the right style of wood. The color doesn't matter.
In Photoshop, go to Image/Adjust/Hue&Saturation. Check the Colorize box and adjust the hue to the paint color you want. Then adjust the saturation and brightness so you like it.
If you want less wood-grain detail to be visible, go to Image/Adjust/Brightness&Contrast. Slide the contrast slider down.

Thanks for the help SargentCM and Arcadelia! I'll try your suggestions out.

Keep in mind also that I'm building the models in Rhino3d, then importing them, peice by peice into BAT. It's too bad you can't export right out of Rhino. It's much more faster, easier to use, and user-friendly than BAT is. So when projects start going into BAT, expect a wait, as this computer doesn't handle BAT well at all and also I have to convert and preview many of the peices to see if they transfered right. When I've done this in the past, BAT (unlike Rhino) freezes this computer up. I may also have Jt or someone else with a faster computer render things for me until I can upgrade this garbage heap.

I'll be taking a day or two off of BAT starting tomorrow, since I'm continuing the moving process and the weekend is time I spend with friends...

On Monday, I'll hopefully have more progress to show everyone.

OK I said Monday, but it ended up being Tuesday... I had to perform an emergency CD burn, as my BAT work ended up maxing out my hard drive space! Luckily, I managed to work on stuff yesterday and today.

I'm really plowing throught the Fox Tower... Now, I can show you the full 360, since I have pulled the tower's walls both up and down. I still need to work on the curving part and ully flesh out the maintenance core (white part on top). After those are done, the roof floors and roof junk can be added, finishing up the top of the building. Then the fun begins as I move onto the base.

Here's some pics. Sorry to all those on dial-up, but I wanted to show you the progress in all its glory.

*Foxy Lady by Jimmy Hendrix plays*

From the SW (South Park Blocks):

Another angle from the NE, showing off the tower's changing shape:

    1fox1-10-11-04.jpg

On the Waddle's front, I'm combing through photos of the building to look for gutters and other junk while I keep working on the hand-drawn neon stuff. This may take a little longer. I also found in an old photo that the building has a gentle pitched roof on its main section.

I'm also considering making 2 other versions of Waddle's, as the building was changed over the years. The model that I've been working on is how it looked the day when the last customer walked in and waddled out this May. I'm considering a late 1950's version and a late 1940's version showing what it originally looked like when it opened. The only problem is that there are precious few photos on the net of the entire building.

Anyways, time to get back to my BAT Blast. It's really great to be back!

wow! fox tower looks amazing! it looks exactly like the real thing. even the colors are very accurate haha, sparky, if you'd like i'd be happy to help you out on this one, don't worry about the polies when it gets transferred into gmax, cus i know of a way to knock out unnecessary polies. Also, do you plan on doing the lobby/base? It looks pretty complicated to recreate in gmax, or rhino? but that would look really cool to have a banana republic sign visible, and isn't there also a good dog/bad dog? ohyea, and what about the cinema?! 18.gif

Yup, the base is coming up... I'm working on getting the top of the tower just right, then the base work starts up.

Thanks for the pics of the base JT! Those are angles I didn't get on my last photo trip downtown...

As for help, I'll probably need ya to render/export it for me. There's some spotlights that I'll try to do (need to practice my lighting skills), but if I'm unsucessful, I'll ask you.

Time to get back to window counting and BATing... Maybe I'll have more progress pix tomorrow.

    Oh, I forgot to add:

The base is quite strange, but it's nothing I can't model! I'm drawing each section on paper in preperation of modeling it. The building really is not complete without the base....

As for the retail signs, I pulled up some pics of the Banana Republic, Regal Cinemas, Mario's, and the Fox Tower entry signs and checked them against my font database in Photoshop. They match pretty closely with what I have and making letters in Rhino is really simple! The only hand-drawn letting I may have to do is on the Regal sign, as it is like the Waddle's sign: Neon tubes inside letter borders. Shouldn't be a problem to model. However, I don't know if they'll show up unless you're in the closest zooms... Plus the Regal sign lights up red, while the rest of the tower can use the standard beige nite lites. I have no clue how to make individual objects light up differently than the default lighting rigs, but I've seen it done.

Another challenge will be how to level out the base. The Fox Tower sits on a lot that slopes gently downward east towards the Willamette River. The ground floor exterior of the tower is skewed in real life to compensate for this. I don't think there will be too many problems in leveling the ground floor out, however some of the awnings on the north and south sides may be level instead of staggered.

I had frinds over today, so I couldn't do much more than draw out the base parts... I really don't work well with tons of people around looking over my shoulder. Its quite distracting. So I'll probably just do more modeling tomorrow morning once I've woken up.
