How to upload pictures of Simcity 4

The basic process consists of 3 steps, which can be repeated as needed:

Capturing:

1.  Take the screenshot (e.g. PrtSc) and save it to an image file. Ideally this should be JPG to reduce file size for large resolutions.

2.  If you like, it can then be cropped, resized or edited using an image editor.

Uploading:

3.  Open your browser and upload it to an image hosting site (e.g. imgur). This is necessary for the following step:

4.  Copy the direct link (ending only with the file extension).

Embedding:

5.  In the post editor, paste the link into the the image properties window image_icon.png

6.  The image will be inserted into your post when previewed.

You can also press Ctrl-Shift-S to take a screenshot using the in-game screenshot function. This doesn't put them on the clipboard but rather immediately saves them to Documents\SimCity 4\Albums\[city name]\[image filename].png, so you can take a number of shots without having to alt-tab out of the game to save them.

The only downside is that it saves the pictures in the PNG format, which is generally discouraged here on ST and SC4 Devotion as it takes longer for those pics to load. You'll have to convert them to JPG, but personally I don't mind having to do that. I only convert to JPG the pictures I want to upload on to the internet.

The other problem with Prt Sc is that the save is a BMP which has to be converted to be useful.  Paint will do that.

On my system (Linux) the Prt Sc function takes a snap and presents you with a save dialogue.  You can specify the file type there.  The default is to send the shot to /home/<my account>/Pictures/*.PNG

What would you suggest for a image hosting site?  Most of my old images are hosted by imageshack, but they've now made it necessary to sign up for at $4 a month to have access to a direct link to the image.  I have a few images on Photobucket, but I'm a little worried about space, though I suppose if I start over at Photobucket now, I have another 100 updates worth of pictures I can host there, since through 95 updates I have close to 2 GB of images.  Wait, nevermind.  I probably have AT MOST 1 GB of images...and that is if EACH update was 10 MB worth of photos and that isn't nearly the case.  My total is thrown way off because my folders also contain the raw mosaic .bmp, GIMP files, etc.  I guess I'll shift to photobucket for my new stuff.

...

You may want to give majhost a try. Quite a few people use it here for CJs and screenshots. I've found the features are fairly basic, but it does the job, and as far as I'm aware there aren't upload / size limits like other free hosts. Another good thing is the file names are retained, making it easy to find images alphabetically. One drawback is the site can sometimes have lengthy downtimes, so is not completely reliable. But there's probably nothing more unlimited unless you go for a premium account using another host.

We are getting to the point where no one can offer unlimited free photo hosting any more.  Too many people are using 1080p PNG images which are rather large.

I have an annual paid subscription to imgur which gives me unlimited images and no size restrictions.  I am still a good citizen and only store JPGs.  PNGs are totally unnecessary.

True.. but I always thought by the middle-end of 2014, 1080p would have been far superseded anyway! At least to the point of being able to handle the bandwidth!

.. but imgur will take paint files in bmp's no problem and just auto convert them.. just hit print screen (aka Prt Scrn to the right of f12) in sc4 .. paste (aka hold ctrl+ v) into MS Paint and drag and drop the file's icon right from where you save it to in windows explorer right into imgur.com.. it's what I just did because I was too lazy to bust out photoshop and rescale everything all nicely :P

The quality won't be that bad... good enough to get the picture for someone new to the game :thumb:

Actually when you hit print screen on my system it is mapped to the screen snapshot application which allows me to save the image directly as a JPG. (or anything else for that matter.  It defaults to PNG).  Linux has some conveniences, and Ubuntu even more.
