File size storage/location solutions on mac

Hi fellow Mayors, I'm relatively new to the community, having downloaded the rush hour expansion pack from Apple App Store a month ago. Still getting to grips with the game. Never been a gamer but I'm hooked on SC4! I love the whole experience of planning and creating beautifully complex or simple communities and am mesmerised by the simple yet complex nature of the game, and al for less than £7!! Have added NAM and  a number of other mods which greatly enhance the game. Hoping to tap into the wisdom of the crowd that is the Simtropolis community- any advice greatly appreciated.

Question 1-

As files become bigger and start to eat up memory on my late 2008 Macbook HD ( Running Mavericks) can I easily transfer the entire game/files to an external drive and boot from there or are there some drivers/files that are hidden in other parts of my system that would cause conflict and increase likelihood of crashes? It just sounds a bit too simple- Help! 

Question 2-

Are there any other good sites from which to access/download mods/BATS other than Simtropolis?

1. Yes.  There is an option -userdir:<pathname> that allows this.  Make sure the pathname ends with a file system separator.

 

2. Two that I use regularly: https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php A very active development site; and http://www.simpeg.com/forum/index.php A hangout for some specialists.  These are both moderated and kept free of trouble.  Any others you find should be looked at with a virus scanner.

Regarding No.2, there's quite a comprehensive list of the various exchanges. You'll find some are easier to navigate than others.
