cannot update from 1.1.610 to 1.1.638

G'day,

 

I am a complete newcomer to this game so perhaps I am just doing something wrong.  I purchased a download version of SC4 Deluxe via Origin and ater a few days I noticed that there is a patch available.  I downloaded the patch but when I tried to install it I got a message that said: "Old File not found.  However a file of the same name was found.  No update done since file contents do not match".  I've tried disabling my anti-virus but that didn't help.  My version number is 1.1.610 and I live in France and downloaded it from Origin and the game is installed in "Programsx86"  I am running Win 7 64bit Home Premium.  If anyone would help me with this I would greatly appreciate it.  Thanks up front.

The Digital versions of SC4 should be already completely patched.

 

By the looks of it, you've downloaded the patch for the wrong SKU (They are different).

Too much information.  With the Origin version you needn't patch at all.  Your version should be 1,1,641. 

 

You are free to use any custom content from the exchanges.

Appreciate your responses, thanks.  Unfortunately, the version I received is not patched, or at least it appears to be not patched.  I did try to install the NAM roads, etc., and was informed that I needed the patch.  I am at a loss now.  I guess I'll try to contact Origin.  Thanks again.

Actually, Origin doesn't seem to come pre-patched. If it says that the game is version 1.1.610 then you need the patch. Simple as that.

 

I think that the only case where SC4 comes pre-patched is if you download the game off of Steam.

Yeah, I do need to patch it, the Origin version is not delivered patched.  The problem is that the game won't patch.  I've contacted Origin...

Sounds like Origin's version has a no-cd patch in it.  Silly of them.  The patch programs look at the check sum and will not run if it is wrong.  Any patch of any kind changed the check sum.

 

Origin is EA.  They should know better.

 

I got my 1,1,641 version from GamersGate.  Others have got it from Amazon.  Because of some after market software requirements, notably the BAT, Steam is not my first choice.

 

And I have seen at least one dump from a member whose version 1,1,641 came from Origin.  I wonder if Origin has been hacked and don't know it.

This would be just plain stupid, but probably true.  Kind of like what Aspyr did with their new Mac version.  My recommendation to the OP is to ask for a refund and buy the game from somewhere else.

I've got my copy of SC4 from Origin, which was apparently an unwise decision (akin to having Origin in general). I have the same "Old file not found" error mentioned above when I attempt to patch it. For grins I tried the SKU 2 patch which did not work either. Does anyone know of a workaround for this yet or is there a way we can build one?

 

I may end up just buying the game again from Steam, which is what I should've done in the first place. Either way, I'm going to file a complaint with EA, though from their history I doubt I'll get any resolution whatsoever.

Something seems to have gone sour over at Origin (EA).  They used to serve up 1,1,641 but lately its been 1,1,610 with a no-cd patch.

 

Steam is OK, but you'd be better off with one of the vendors that uses the standard set up.  Try Amazon, GamersGate, GOG Games, or almost any other games purveyor.  You should get 1,1,641 which is all patched up and diskless.

Thank you for the prompt reply! I decided to go ahead and throw some money at Steam. I was quite pleased to find 1.1.641 in the Details page.

 

I do wonder what the deal is with EA/Origin giving people the short end of the stick with the Origin version. It really makes no sense. If I do get a reasonable response from them, I will certainly post about it. With any luck, it would result in a positive change to their distro. One can hope at least...

Someone needs to email Origin and complain. I'd suggest that anyone having problems with installing the official patches should complain about this when they demand a refund from Origin. Perhaps that would get their attention and maybe, just maybe, they might fix the issue instead of ripping people off.

Selling an outdated and essentially "locked" version is very misleading. At the bare minimum, you'd expect the version number would be listed on the product page! Then customers could decide whether or not to purchase, or use an alternative retailer. Either they don't have knowledge about the update missing, or are being too lazy to re-include it. What doesn't add up is it being fully patched one minute, and now discontinued. Something must have gone wrong with their distribution service.
 
The installation structure for Origin seems to be what's preventing updating manually. Or possibly a modified exe. Whatever the cause, the patches must detect the game hasn't been installed as expected. I wonder if there's some way to trick the patch installer to perform the update. If I remember correctly, the patches check the registry to find if SC4 is installed. With them missing, maybe these entries could be re-created or modified, pointing to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe". The game data could then be copied to here.
 
Although it's probably too much hassle, if anyone with the Origin edition wants to experiment with this, be sure to make a full backup of the registry before making any changes.

Hi, I'm having similar problems with mine, although I downloaded mine from my CD (Been forced to reinstall the whole thing on a new computer), and I had nothing to do with Origin. I've tried every single update link posted above (including the Asian ones for good measure), and absolutely nothing I do will cause my game to update from 1.1.613.0 to 1.1.638. I'm starting to run out of options here. If it helps, the only current modification I've made to my game is to switch it from LHD to RHD (I'm an American with the UK edition) via the registry editor. I really hope we can get everyone's issue solved soon. Can't wait to refill my plugins folder.

Don't understand that one.  Did you install in the standard location?  (accept the default from the installer).

I've got an idea...

 

How about making use of the "Start in" shortcut option when running the patch.
This controls what directory (folder) is available to an application when executed. Maybe it can help point the patch in the right direction.
 
To try this:
 
1. Download the appropriate patch.
2. Create a shortcut to the patch installer on the desktop.
3. Right click and open Properties.
4. Paste SC4's installation path into the "Start in" box, as shown below:
 

 
Default: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Maxis\SimCity 4 Deluxe"  OR  "C:\PROGRA~2\Maxis\SIMCIT~1\"

Origin: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\SimCity 4 Deluxe Edition\"   (If the Origin version uses a modified exe, the updates probably won't work).
 
5. Apply > OK.
6. Run the patch using the shortcut.
7. Hope for the best.

I don't think that's exactly legal for someone else to send you a patched version of the game.

 

Contact Origin and tell them that their version of the game cannot be patched, and demand a refund from them. Then go buy it on Steam, where it does indeed come pre-patched.

This is skating on the fringe of the rules of this site. 

 

I suggest you forget both Origin (after you get your refund) and Steam.  Both of these vendors use a DRM packaging that is unnecessary. Keep a watch on the other sites that sell this game and you may find it for as little as five dollars.  Try GamersGate, GOG Games, and Amazon.

 

If money is an object in purchasing a $30 U.S. game, then save your pennies.

Sorry, but I'm afraid we can't allow the sharing of core game files, including the exe.

 

The General Rules state: "Anything relating to the pirating, or copying, of any software game title" is prohibited. The important thing here is the copying or distribution. Before being allowed to share the file, you'd have to obtain permission from Maxis/EA (the copyright holder). As for the licence key, this only permits the use of your purchased copy, not someone else's copy.

 

Still, I'm not sure whether it'd even work. Software updates usually don't update by just copying files over. The other core files might have patched, but this doesn't account for any changes that haven't been made in the registry (connecting everything together).

 

As advised, the best option would be to ask Origin for a refund. Then purchase off a retailer that does sell a fully updated game.
