Upload netiquette

Hello again from the question machine fantozzi,

how would I behave if I wan't to upload a modded file and I can't reach the original file creator to get his permission?

As in internet that happens: people leave communties but the content remains. Was there ever thought of a time limit?

Let's say: after one month I didn't get an answer to my request to the original creator – I am allowed to upload my mod?

What's about taking the ownership of abbandoned files by the community - so if the original creator isn't reachable the next step would be to contact a site administrator to ask permission?

I couldn't find and I'm missing rules how to treat abbandoned files.

As I run some time ago into the problem described here:

I began to wonder - after I spent an hour to go through the list in this thread and fix my plugins - how many people did this before me and will do it in the future:

What posibilties are there to fix errors on uploads - here on the STEX - if the original creator lost interest doing it by his own?

Me myself - I find that very difficult to decide. I shurely think even if things are given away for free the ownership of a creative inventor should be respected. Irrespective of his popularity and influence.

On the other hand - as time passes and more and more files on the STEX become abbandoned – what seems quite natural – it will approach a sad state. A sort of ghost town.

I don't know a solution for this. That's why I ask.

And on the other hand: the internet is full of such ghost towns. You find an intersting group, post a statement, get no answer. And after a while you recognise - you are amongst death avatars.

We would prefer you getting the owners permission above anything else.

If you are not able to get that because the member is no longer active, then messaging a STEX mod or administrator would be your next step. We would want to know things like, who was the original author, why its important to have on the STEX, what lengths you've gone to to get the attention of the author, and if it is uploaded elsewhere.

As for older files on the STEX, if there are any issues with older files, submit a report on the file by clicking the "Is this file broken?" button, and tell us why this file is no longer working or if links in the description no longer lead to where they should.
