Employment - A Tale of Two Cities

Playing in offline mode, I have two neighboring cities.  The first one got away from me - 300k pop and 8k unemployment.  Homeless all over the place and I don't know how to resolve that.  My next idea is to go back and plow under a few residential zones.

I created a city next to it.  At this point, the population is more manageable at18k.  However, companies are desperate for workers and I've got 3k available jobs.

This seems like a perfect situation - lots of jobs in one city and lots of job seekers in the other, but nothing is getting resolved.

This is a part of Simcity that is really beyond me.  When you're working on one city, it seems to me that all others are completely dormant.  I'd expect everything to be the same - simoleans, population, etc., etc.  I don't understand how sims from that non-played city will decide to come work in this "live" city.

I'm playing offline in a region with 5 cities and one Great Work. My cities all are between 75,000 and 175,000 in population. I tried making a very wealthy city with a poor city next to it so the $ people could come to the $$$ city and work. That did not work. What stops it is that the people have to be able to get from their homes to their jobs in the other city and back in a certain amount of time. Most cannot do it. If they live near the entrance/exit of their hometown and work at the entrance/exit of the next town over they can do it however.

As you are building your city try to pay attention to the number of jobs available vs. the number of sims that can fill that job level.  It is fine to have a slight excess of jobs, but your sims will complain about being overworked if this ratio is too high.

For your current city that has 300k with 8k+ unemployment:  See what wealth levels are unemployed and bulldoze residential of that wealth level(Dezone where you're going to bulldoze).  I would then zone more commercial or build office levels in a tower.  With zoning, make sure the land value reflects the job level you need.

    Thanks, Brian.  I'll try that.

When you say build offfice levels in a tower, does that require an addon?  I'm just playing the basic game.

When I say office levels I am talking about the cities of tomorrow expansion where you can build megatowers.  Also, a good rule of thumb is 3 residential blocks to 1 commercial.

Hmm, I do commerce about 1:6

As for the commute issues, try park and rides across the low wealth city and bus stops in the wealthier one.
