6 Lane Freeways?

Could I interest any seasoned BATters to edit a transit s3d tile, to allow for uber-wide freeways?

The concept is this:  If you placed two freeways of the same type (elevated or ground level) directly next to each other, they would magically turn into a single 6 lane per side freeway.  For the full project, we'd need about 20-30 s3d tiles, as well as gluing some together for preview models for the interchanges.  However, to start, I ask that someone who finds this interesting simply does the first piece, so that I can make sure there are no weird side effects:

What we need is someone to take highway piece 0x02001500, which includes the s3ds at the following Instance IDs:

0x02001500
0x02001501
0x02001502
0x02001503
0x02001504

Take the center barrier, which is on the south side of the tile, and replace it with one half of a lane stripe, such that if you take two of these tiles, one of them flipped along the horizontal axis, the lane stripe is complete and looks correct.  To make it look right, you might have to widen the other two lanes slightly, to make all the lanes even widths.

In any case, if someone wants to do this, I'd be more than happy to show you what it can look like in the game 10.gif.  If we get this tile done and there's more interest, we could go ahead and do it as a complete upgrade to the SC4 freeway network.

I like this idea a lot (though I'm afraid I'd be useless at helping implement it.) Here in Toronto we have some 16 lane highways (8 each way). How would you manage overpasses and interchanges though?

You mean 6 lanes overall or 12 lanes overall?

I would hope he means 12 overall. Otherwise, I must say T7T will have lost his mind. I think we could probably stick in another lane though....and while we're at it, if we add in a median we could regulate sizes more.....

T7T, I'll try right now to see if I can do this.......it may not be pretty, but it should help.

Edit: What .dat would this be in? I am trying sc1.dat now, but does anyone know exactly which?

Yes, I mean 12 lanes total.  Interchanges would have to be edited, but it would basically be a matter of replacing the existing straight highway part of the s3d in the interchanges with the new part, very doable.

So, can anyone actually DO what I have asked with the s3ds, and let me put it in game so you guys can see it?

    [edit]
    yes, it's in sc1.dat

the textures may be in a different dat though...you might need to edit them, I really don't know, but good luck, and thank you!!!

    Look up a post2.gif

I'll see what I can do.....it may not turn out beautiful, but it should at least give us a change to see if we should persue this further.

Edit: I must say, I'm making good progress.........1.gif

Perhaps a better use for this would be 4 wide highways with grass beside them and a ditch in the middle.  I know most highways here in the US are like that rather than being closed in with k rails.

Note that this is two separate pieces put together. T7T, how exactly do you want this? I can give you the .gmax for how it is now, or do you just want one of them, or is there another big problem? Also, I am not sure of the scaling or anything like that. The texture was a real ***** to do because somehow, Maxis made the model so that when you put the texture on it, the elft 20% or so goes on right, then the rest gets flipped and put on. It took me forever to get it right. In short, it was fun until I got to the texturing.18.gif

    looks good!

Basically what I need is the s3d tile piece (16mx16m) skinned correctly.  Take a look at redlotus' interchange tutorial (on a sticky in this forum).  It looks like you've done step one, and all I need is that you complete through step 5.  The rest, I can handle (and the RUL coding wil be different for this than the interchanges anyway).

I've never really created or edited these s3d files before, so if you have any questions on process, I'd reffer you to the tutorial or to redlotus.  I basically just need 5 s3d files like the instances I posted, but which look like half of your previous pic.

    Thanks again!!

Well I looked at the 5 instances, and they all looked the same to me....are they different in some way, and I'm missing something big, or what?

They may be the same, I'm not totally sure.  I know that as a general rule, the far zoom (ending in 00) s3d has fewer polygons than the closest zoom (04).  The tutorial probably has more info about it, but on a straight highway piece it might have so few polygons anyway that it doesn't matter.

i think maxis should have the made game so when you lay a road, avanue or highway, a box popped up and you could type in how many lanes you want, but keeping it realistic.44.gif

Related to this, could it be possible to make 3-lane avenues? (avenues look so much nicer than ground highways!). Or what about one-way avenues?

I think we should let them finish doing what they're doing first.

Eastian: That is different than this. That is a retexturing of the avenue, and this is a methond of dragging two highways and making one.

Why don't yo guys just make shoulders for the outside lanes, making it an 8-lane freeway!(four lanes each direction?)

For variations of this, we can! Thats the beauty of the whole system, we just need to rexture once we've got it once.

so would it be possible, or of any worth, to convert the existing highways to one way function, remove the concrete divider, and then make new interchanges for connection to original highways.?

I find this project very interesting, and honestly, I am surprised no one thought of it sooner. I think this will make for fantastic new ways to build highways, including something that I see IRL all the time but never in SimCity -- highways where the northbound lanes and southbound lanes (for example) seperate from each other for some time.

    Cool!

That's a nice looking pic there, I think it would look neat (and pretty realistic) if we could give the highways a more concrete look as they often do in real life, especially around cities I've been noticing lately.  This is a pretty neat looking idea and I'd love to see it in the game - don't know how much I'd actually use it, but it would be great just the same.
