Students Won't Commute

Hi everyone

So i decided to give simcity a try since the offline update showed up and it's great i just have 1 big issue.\

I have a town where i have a middle school and 2 University's, it works great for that town but the issue is that all the other students from my other town's won't commute to those schools which causes me to have low Industrial tech lvl.

I have the largest bus station in all of the towns and i have school busstops everywhere aswell but my school busses refuse to leave my town where all the schools are.

Does anyone know what the issue is here?

Also, is there a way to speed up the removal of radation poisoning? It's going so slow, i read that the COT pack had something but i don't have acces to that.

Thanks for the help.

Apparently that function is still not working, guess i'll ruin my nice layout and put schools somewhere ..

Yeah, sadly Maxis hasn't fixed it yet :(

The university benefits the whole region.

The bug just makes upgrading the university that much harder.

Some have gotten students to commute to university.

Unfortunately students don't commute to other cities for school, although it is a feature in the game it's broken since game launch.  I don't understand why they haven't fixed it in the 10 patches since the game came out.  I only counted the major patches and there were also several minor patches they could of fixed it in too.  (I would think offline mode would be harder than fixing the regional student bug.)

The most I've ever gotten was maybe 10 regional students at my university.

If you want to max out your University first of all build all the dorms and shut off all other schools (If you didn't know that before).

I tend to have 1 high school and either a college or university, and i noticed that the grade and high school do get regional students, seems it's just the uni that doesn't get them.

Maybe it would work better if your neighbouring connected cities do play online the same time you play? Of course that would depend on the amount of students they have that their own system can't handle ;)

I only played Singleplayer for now, not online ^^

I was tempted to buy this game because of a recent sale and the offline mode. But it seems they haven't fixed bugs that were present at launch. I think I'll pass on this game then.

It works as intended - which means it needs an overhaul. They commute but only when cities are active at the same time. The rest of the time it is totally broken, sadly. That said i wonder how offline mode is different? I found nothing in the main UI file that handles this different to online mode. Maybe i am wrong ;)

After spending almost 20 hours playing in offline mode I can attest to the regional aspects being better except for universities (their students still don't travel).

    The regional aspects as follows:

    • Great Works approval: Takes a few minutes
      • Instantly appears in your other cities once approved
      • Supplying the resources works faster
    • Great Works operational: I don't know yet, haven't finished my airport yet
    • Tourist/communting sims/Shoppers: Works right
    • Utilities: Now instant when buying from a neighbor
    • Garbage/Recycling: Works faster and more accurate
    • Police/Fire/Health: Works right
    • Freight: Now works right
    • Students: Primary commute, university still don't
    • Gifting: Now instant
    • Omega: Haven't tried it yet
    • Controlnet: can be a tad laggy

The regional economy also works better in offline mode.

Yes my cities are next to each other.

You may want to test it with 2 cities next to each other...same experiment as usual ;)

After probably playing the same amount that you have, I can attest that some of what you say works, in reality still doesn't work.

    What does work:

    Anything Great Works related.

    Anything tourist related.

    Police/Fire/Health/Garbage/Recycling for regions.

    What is still badly broken:

Commuting to work, both inner-city and regional. (Sims, for whatever reason, are still not commuting, and traffic AI is so bad that sims wont drive to jobs...leads to more workers needed for industry, more jobs needed for residential when both are available in all wealth levels)

Mass transit is broken (buses endlessly looping, sims not using MT to commute to work, etc.). Buses essentially go to random bus stops, there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for which stop they go to.

    Students attending university.

Industry still doesn't export freight properly even with ample commercial and trade depot zoning.

Regional economy is pointless now because everything is the same, static price. You can flood the market with endless materials and, until they run out, the price will remain the same. Makes the game way too easy to earn money.

I don't have the expansion and don't plan on buying it, but I can't imagine that this is any different with the expansion.

    Commuting isn't that bad.

Sims commuting is odd but not fully broken like in other Simcity games

Granted if you are coming off of NAM then you would be sorely disappointed

I really don't have an issue with mass transit in my cities (maybe CoT did something to it).

Has industry ever worked right in any Simcity game? (Seriously I don't remember it ever working right in any game).

Essentially I don't have any major issues outside of commuting university students and the occasional freight issues.

Though the base game could use some more balancing in a future patch.

Ok. Are you serious? You own CoT and do not encounter issues in commuting between RCI? If that's actually true, i will have to write a nice letter to EA/Maxis.

I said I don't have any major issues outside of students and freight.

It's quite common for companies to fix issues and engines in the expasion pack instead of releasing them as a standalone patch.

I will note that it doesn't seem to work.  I've got cars set to deliver it to neighboring cities and a clear path to the highway, and no dice.

    no it's not...

    It is for PC games.

Though consoles and handhelds thankfully haven't caught up yet.

Here are a list of games that have exclusive patches to expansion packs:

    • Simcity 1
    • Simcity 2000
    • Simicty 3000 (The patches weren't released for Simcity 3000 original, you had to buy Simcity 3000U)
    • Simcity 4 (The 3rd major patch was included exlcusively with Rush Hour due to its size)
    • Spores
    • Practically every other game made by Maxis
    • Elder Scroll series (Skryim included)
    • Street Fighter X Tekken
    • Dragon Quest X
    • Final Fantasy XI
    • Final Fantasy XIV
    • Call of Duty (many patches are bundled with the map packs)
    • Monster Hunter series (well it's on consoles/handelds for mainline titles, Capcom just fixes everything in the ultimate versions)
    • Street Fighter series (Most major updates/patches are bunlded with the expansion packs)
    • Phantasy Star Universe
    • Phantasy Star Online Ep 1&2 (not patched, you had to buy 1&2+ edition at full price)
    • Injustice (Ultimate version is fixed, but is full price)

This is just off the top of my head, though for PC games this list is quite big.

These publishers typically bundle patches with expansion packs are Activision, EA, WB, Ubisoft, Bethesda, Sega, Capcom,  and Square-Enix.

These 8 publishers/developers are the biggest in world.

    Simcity 1

to my knowledge there were no actual expansions or patches to this game. This was released at a time when patching software really wasn't a thing (pre-internet) there were several versions of the game released.

    Simcity 2000

The expansion pack is only a scenario pack and I can find nothing about patches "exclusive" to it.

    Dragon quest X

Is an mmorpg, things which are updated and patch constantly outside of expansion packs. Did you just make up a list of games you know?

The rest of your list is as much garbage. A very long time ago when it was difficult to distribute patches, they may be included on things like demo CDs or on expansion packs. in this day and age, no. Publishers would not get away with fixing genuine bugs in a base game exclusively via a for pay expansion pack. They might change or alter gameplay, but not fix actual bugs.
