a good traffic layout?

I tend to concentrate everything around train stations in the urban areas to bring in people from the suburbs and then connect the train stations to the underground or bus lines, got no map or anything for the moment.
I'm not a big fan of big roads or car dependent cities, which is the main transport on the countryside instead.
The big role models for public transportation are Tokyo and Berlin :}

I usually plan my road systems in "layers". The higher the layer, the more sparse the routes are, but also, the more capacity this route has, the higher speed and more comfort. The lower layers are for access. Usually, it's preferred only to connect routes from the same layer or from layers that are one lower or higher than the current one.

Usually, motorways (RHW) are on the top layer with exits around 1 or 2 km (or more). That would be about two or three per large city tile from end to end. This network does not have at-grade crossings. No development takes place next to motorways. Two-lane or 2+1-lane highways are also in this category if they don't have at-grade crossings:

The second layer are thoroughfare avenues. These have at-grade crossings, but they are sparsely spread, so traffic can flow through nicely. Usually I avoid development next to avenues:

The third layer are roads and city avenues. These have a lot of intersections and have both a flow and access function, but they still form main routes in neighbourhoods and districts. There's substantial development next to these roads:

The bottom layer is the street network, which is used for access only. This road type always comes with development and is a slow speed network:

Grid or grid-less, it doesn't matter, as long as if there is some kind of structure it's good.

I hope this may inspire you.

Best,

Maarten

Interesting Maarten! But may I ask what's the difference between a city avenue and a thoroughfare avenue?

Yep I agree with the suggestion above this point but of course if I may add one more suggestion. Do not just concentrate your traffic in one area, try to make your city decentralized to have more business districts and also use mass transit too. They are of big help especially when your city have reached its pinnacle.

I think thoroughfares sort of serve as "at grade expressways". They only intersect with major roads.

I am increasingly using traffic (freight, bus or all motorised transport) blockers to control the flow of traffic and encourage use of alternative means of getting around (walking or public transport).

This also gives me a lot of freedom to plan and layout roads and transport networks that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional (with greater emphasis, I guess, on form over function).

Thanks for this reply Yoshi. I admit that took some time. Hahaha

I started to become more aware of traffic layout now and prior to starting a city, I create the expressways and main avenues first, next would be rails, then roads and streets. When needed, I create flyovers and underpasses.

Before, I just randomly place the networks everywhere I like to.
