Setting a Region back to default

Is there any way to set a region back to default, what it was right after the game was installed. I modified timbuktu, and have cities in it now, is there any way to get it back to what it was in the beginning?

I want to have multiple copies of this region, same exact starting terrain, but I suppose I'll need to rename them, Timbuktu, Timbuktu2, Timbuktu3, etc. Is there a way to copy/clone a region?

Well you have the option to obliterate the cities, which will remove everything built but any terraformation already done cannot be reverse engineered this way. The only possibility to recover the terrain (eside reinstalling the game) is to restore the region with the original files.

To make clones/copies just find the folder of region you want to duplicate (under Documents\SimCity 4\Regions) and copy-paste it, then rename it.

How would I restore it with the original files? Not sure how? Is it possible to save individual cities as files, not just the regions the cities are in. I know you can import a city into a blank region tile (of the same size). So I could save my two city files somewhere else, then reinstall the game, and put them back on the tiles I want them on.

Or, could I save the region file to somewhere else- with the cities in it. Then, reinstall the game, and I can put the cities/region back, to what it was before the reinstall- in the region's case, renaming it.

I'm also tinkering a little bit with landscape designer. I'd prefer something different randomization options, like in 2K, you could say how much water, how much elevation- do you want a river or coast or not, would be simpler and easier.

Look in the Program Files/SimCity 4/Regions folder. You should find a Regions folder with the game's default regions in their original condition. You can remove the region folder from the Documents/SimCity 4/Regions folder and replace it with a copy of the one in the Program Files folder. You won't need to re-install the game doing this. Also, if you have the disk version of the game, the same regions can be found on one of the disks.

Yup... but I don't understand why the developpers decided to include a copy of the regions there. Apart from restoring the regions ot default... an action you have to do manually because they kind of forgot to include it in the game cligne-confus-3.gif

Not always manually... I don't know their thinking, but if for some reason you remove the Region folder in the Documents/SimCity 4 directory, when you run the game again it will copy the regions located in the Program Files folder back into the Documents/SimCity 4/Regions location - including any custom maps that may be stored there. I guess it could be looked on as a 'back up system' in case something happens to the regions in the Documents location. The only drawback to this is the Documents/SimCity 4/Regions folder has to be completely empty for the game to do it. If even one region is in place, none will be transferred.

I see that as a positive thing actually.

In the case of any of the default regions, you can recopy them from the installation files in C:\Program files ...\SimCity 4\Regions\*

Just use windows explorer and copy the region folder back into your C:\<user name>\Documents\SimCity 4\Regions folder.

For regions that have been downloaded, simply render the region again.

I've tried monkeying with the Timbuktu regional map and it really has been twisted by the developers for use as a tutorial.  I tried to copy it and use it by getting rid of the canned cities, but it just didn't work right.  Eventually I gave up, but be my guest.

If you want a good region to play with, look on the STEX.  There are lots of renderable regions, some in my name.  Pick a map you like and go to it.

Sure, as a type of backup/restore function. I simply meant it would have been a little more useful, if that was the intent, if any regions were missing rather than all of them.

You can just use SC4 Mapper 2013 to export a new region from the Timbuktu one. That gets rid of all the tutorial stuff.

I should check that out, then. I'm using landscape designer right now. Just, like I said, I'm not much of  fan of the controls, like I was of SC2K's ones. Plus, it makes the map outside the game, then you import it in. I wonder if there's a mod that let's your terraform the region in the region view inside the game.

I'm not aware of any mod that lets you do that. But there are many maps available on the exchanges, and you can either use those as they are or change them to your liking, like use just a smaller piece of them. Most real-life maps need a bit of work to make them suitable for the game. The very interesting-looking ones are hard to play, and the others may look a bit boring in tile-view.

When I was playing with the Timbuktu region neither Mapper nor SC4Terraformer existed.  Since I have kind of advanced beyond that, I'll keep it in mind but right now I have 7 downloaded regions in my list, most active, plus my sandbox and of course Timbuktu which cannot be deleted.

Curious as to why you state Timbuktu can't be deleted. I've removed the whole default region without any issues. And it doesn't get replaced when I boot up.

Due to most of the tutorial cities occasionally glitching, I wouldn't use any of the default city tiles in fare of losing a city, though I always have backups of my regions. The worst scenario is losing a few years development depending on how long since the last region backup

I currently have only 3 regions in my SC4 folder. 1 active (Groovington), 1 (Ten Townns to be used as next active), and 1 sandbox (for testing). That's it.

I guess if you delete a region in both region folders, it should be gone for good.

Pretty sure I didn't manually delete that region from the program folder. Do believe I deleted it from the in-game menu, which I suppose deletes both copies (user & program) in this case.

An guess it's only the Timbuktu region that replaces itself since all the other default regions still exist in the program folder but don't pop back up in the in-game folder.

Believe me, I've tried to delete it, but when you start the game it drags it in again from the residency.  I don't muss with the residency.  It is too much work to remember what I have installed in the current wine prefix.

    I don't see such a message.

Edit- my mistake. I didn't know there was a delay before it loads the page, the  "Can not find page" while the countdown is in the top right corner, is quit deceptive.
