Will there be a sequel to SimCity (2013)?

Hi guys.

As the topic suggests. Does anything think EA will make a sequel to SimCity? Or sell the rights to this amazing franchise? SimCity is not bad, I love the user interface and all, but the map sizes, lack of things like subways and bugs are killing me! Just wondering what you all think..

Thanks  :D

Your missing the point. What I'm saying is, based on the reviews it has got, against the undoubtedly massive profit they will of made on it, I wonder if the top guns will decide to sell the franchise or continue with it. Sure, the majority of reviews I've read/watched have highlighted many good things, but also too many bad points to recommend it. On the other hand, I expect EA don't care, as long as it brings in profit.

I just think they rushed the game, missing a big opportunity to make something very special with the new glassbox engine. I like that it simulates everything, and in a funny way, like the cartoon graphics. But just think how much better it could of been if the cities (sorry, I mean villages) were the size of the largest SC4 or CIM2 plots, though that has already been discussed plenty. SC4 still has the edge over SC in a few areas, and to me, that just isn't right.

Sorry man, I was just kidding. It was meant to be a joke!

I guess at this point EA already knows that a lot of money would have to be spent to produce a good game, so they'll problaby decide to suck as much as they can on DLC and then dump the project. That's my opinion based on what we've seen they do so far.

At this point, I'm hoping for a Cities XL sequel.  They missed the mark in some ways, but overall I think its far the superior city builder.

I don't think even EA would dare make another SimCity after the failure of SC'13.

I hope they do make a sequel.  It should be SC4 in 3D.

Not any time soon.  EA's model is to make a game and then sell expansions and addons.

You've obviously confused EA with Blizzard, Valve, and Capcom.

EA's business model is to do yearly iterations like the rest of the Western console developers.

Maxis is the special exception due to their degree of independence within EA.

I hope they do make a sequel.  It should be SC4 in 3D.

And it wouldn't sell enough to breakeven.

Anyways EA's next quarterly conference call is in a few weeks and we will see if Simcity 2013 has broke 3 million mark, thus outselling Simcity 2000.

Honestly I wouldn't expect a sequel to Simcity 2013 for a few more years if at all due to how niche the simulation genre is when it comes to sales.

I'd expect Maxis to turn out a few more expansion packs over the next few years.

I think we will only see one Simcity per decade now due to the sheer costs of development and the low sales of simulation games.

I'm surprised EA allowed Maxis to make another Simcity after how badly Simcity 4 performed.

I mean Cities XL sold so little that it bankrupted the developer Monte Cristro in 2010.

Focus Home Interactive bought the rights to Cities XL, but they said they are only a publisher and have no plans to find a developer to develop a sequel to Cities XL series  because of low sales (Or fix the game engine for that matter).

This is why they've only released the expansion packs known as XL 2012 and Platinum.

Long story short, Simulation games don't sell enough to warrant today's development costs.

    History of Maxis and EA:

    • Maxis was literally out of money by the end of 1996 and was forced to find a buyer or be liqudiated.
    • EA was the only company willing to buy Maxis.
    • EA was unhappy that Simcity 3000 and 3000U didn't make Maxis profitable
    • EA decided to shut down Maxis after the release of The Sims.
    • The Sims sold faster than EA could ship discs.
    • The Sims made EA extremely profitable
    • EA decided to leave Maxis alone provided they continue to work on The Sims as well.
    • Maxis retained their status as an independent EA studio.

The point is EA saved Maxis and The Sims is the only thing keeping Maxis profitable.

I think we'll see one eventually. Despite the game's flaws, it still sold very well and EA touted it as one of the high points of the year, speaking from a business standpoint. Had the game been well-polished for release, this thread probably would not exist.

Really?  With the 15 plus expansions for the sims 3, I think simcity 2013 will follow in it's footsteps expansion wise.

    I highly doubt it.

Simcity 2000 had the highest amount of versions and expansions out of all the Simcity games at 10 ( 4 expansions and 6 console versions each having different features)

Simcity 1 had 4 expansion packs

Simcity 3000 had an ultimate version

Simcity 4 had Rush Hour, though the other expansion packs were canceled due to low sales of Rush Hour and Simcity 4.

Rumors are swirling on other sites including Neogaf that Cities of Tomorrow sold badly as did the DLC.

Also Sims 3 has 11 expansion packs not 15.

This is also one more than Sims 2.

There are 9 furniture packs, though you can buy the items individually on the Sims 3 store (Sims 2 had furniture packs as well).

The reason why the Sims gets more DLC and expansion packs than Simcity is because the Sims fanbase buys them.

Simcity expansion packs and DLC tend to sell badly.

Honestly I'd expect at least one more expansion pack before Maxis lets the modding community take over.

I suppose it's possible to have a sequel to Simcity franchise, but not to new Simcity (2013). The new method of Simulation, I haven't much seen an enthusiast who liked it, smaller map, same, multiplayer, put me in the roster as well, really the list keeps on growing. Perhaps it's a trend making all the games unnecessarily online. But still I don't see how the new Simcity will have a sequel of its own.

But the ONE thing I want more than anything (the one thing I can't have) - is bigger maps  :lost: No expansion pack is gonna fix that..

Maybe not in Simcity 2013, but I'm hoping that the demand for bigger map sizes has not fallen on deaf ears over at Maxis.

Remember, Maxis is the company which can release an entirely new Sims game every three years (plus a million expansions :ooh: ), so therefore creating a new Simcity 6 isn't that remote of a possibility, is it?

Evidently if Maxis can make a cool game which everyone here wants and enjoys, then they should make a decent profit off it and be able to release more expansions which can allow more awesome features :)

I doubt it. The Sims 4 is around the corner unless they put out another expansion pack, but its unlikely since cities of tomorrow didn't sell well.

I think there are two different questions being talked about.  The first is "Will there be a sequel?"  The second is "Will there be a sequel anytime soon?"

The answer to the former is "Likely at some point".  The answer to the latter is "Probably not soon."  It's seems quite plausible that EA will revisit the franchise toward the end of the decade...for a game subject to such a launch disaster, it doesn't seem to have done too badly.  The problem is more that they don't seem to have good luck with DLC/In-Game Purchases.  There are some options on this front (I'd look towards what the Cities in Motion series has done...scenario/city packs on the one hand and additional buildings, facilities, etc. on the other), but it's tough going from what I can tell.  Landmarks that don't have utility aren't something I'm likely to spring for, for example.  On the other hand, all else being equal (and assuming a competent underlying game), I'd pay a reasonable amount for a solid transit model.

One irony is that with Steam and other platforms out there, if EA had just floated a decent single-player game, they would have probably succeeded in generating as much revenue as SimCity likely gave them without much continuing expense (servers, etc.).

I think I said something similar about SimCity having a lot of expansion packs.  I mean there is a new Sims game coming out soon so they can just use the same ideas in the expansion packs for both games.  They already did this with Sims 3.  Both Sims 3 and SimCity (CoT) had a futuristic expansion pack developed the same time.  I also said that an offline mode will be the end of expansion packs for SimCity.  I could be wrong about both (probably am), but neither have proven false so far (even though only one could be true at the same time now).

I am however very positive that there will be a sequel to this SimCity, but it won't be anytime soon and can't wait to see all the mods for this SimCity either.  I used them before they were "ok" to use and especially like the recent mods that came out on this site (I haven't really checked other websites yet though).

I would love at least one more expansion pack, but I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't happen.

With Investors taking over the company and refocusing the company on profitable high selling titles, you'll be lucky to see Maxis produce a title that isn't a Sims game.

The very harsh truth is, simulation games just aren't popular enough to justify the development.

Game development these days is extremely expensive and games need to have mainstream focus and content in order to sell well.

Simulation games lack that unless they are Animal Crossing (Which is the only simulation game to sell well).

NPD reported the December sales results and total year results for the top 10 video and computer games for the U.S. (which is the biggest market for both video and computer games).

If you think U.S. has bad taste, the UK, Canada, AUS share the same tastes as well.

    http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=752867

You can read NPD leaks at Neogaf (Many of their members have access to the numbers).

    138991395288zqojr.jpg

The Yearly top 10, December and November top 10 (both December and November are the two highest selling months) have had the same titles in the top 10 since 2011 (that being Call of Duty, EA sports, 2k sports, shooters, etc...)
