Hi,

What do you think about this innovative railway setup?

Gen. in real life there are more than One railway station in any city ...

But here I want to use only 1 railway station for my city or cities.

Trains from South can go to North, East and West.

Trains from North can go to South, East and West.

Trains from East can go to West, North and South.

Trains from West can go to East, North and South.

And the train from the city can go to all East, West, North and South.

P.S: Railways can't take 90 degree Left/Right turn... So total perpendicular lines cris-crossing each other won't work.

Thank you

If you're talking about realism then a city that has tracks coming together from 4 directions should have 2 or more stations, because there would be a lot of traffic from all 4 directions and some trains have to pass other ones. A lot of cities in the Netherlands that have railway lines coming together have at least 3 stations. Because the city has al these railway lines coming together it is a place where a lot of passengers switch trains or switch to some other mode of transport. The city will likely expand because you can reach so many other places so easily.

That's how it works in Europe at least.

Plus, in this particular situation, you're creating a whopping six level crossings with roads, turning not only rail but also road traffic into a nightmare.

For crossing roads, I suggest the Flexible Underpass pieces (FLUPS).  One of the nice things about that particular station is that it is cheap and really designed to used as a commuter station and not a hub.  I sprinkle them liberally around my cities.  There are other stations, by SimGoober for example, that have multiple tracks in and out that are more suitable as hubs.

Sorry, but this layout doesn't look realistic at all, unfortunately.

First off, this simple (well, double) track looks rather inadequate, and it can easily be congested. In real cities, esp big ones can have 4, 6 or even 8 or more tracks, with branches converging to and/or diverging from that "mainline" bundle. If you are for heavy rail traffic, you should instead lay two (double) parallel tracks (and put some crossovers in places). Even if your city is going to be relatively small, you should lay that double track, if you have heavy through traffic.

And yes, the station doesn't look quite realistic, esp if it's going to be the only station in your city. It looks capable of serving only a small suburb or village. There are larger stations on the STEX and LEX, incl many multi-track terminals for metropolitan areas. I have also released larger stations on the STEX, with two through tracks and transparent roof; some configurations include GLR or HSR in addtion to the common rail, but there is one with two rail-only tracks too. Maybe consider using these ones (and lay the two double tracks I mentioned above). You should still place one (only Maxis? - not sure) station "near the city's border" (that's what the description says) and make it get a lot of usage to unlock the ingame Grand Rail Station (or so), a reward with one through track (plan ahead and leave some room for it). As far as I can remember, some members said that it's impossible to get it (due to a bug), and provided a fix (sorry, can't provide a link).

Also, it would be best to not lay tracks (and connections) so close to the city's corners (talking about the North-South track), as this can cause the eternal commuters effect.

    OK.......

What do you think about this setup?

    railway_setup2.JPG

What I want is a railway JUNCTION where people don't have to get off at the station to board train for other station...

In this setup (see the top 1st one)...

Eastern railway directly goes to Northern railway...

So anybody who wants to go to South from East has to get off the train and take another train that is going to South.

    ****

The 2nd setup is too ugly but yes people dont have to get off the train...

    *****

As you can see that its a small city so congestion won't be a prob.. I think :(

    ******

Can someone give me a realistic layout to lay down a junction.

    Thank you

1st setup, why do the lines have to be crossing eachother, wouldn't it be easier to let them run parallel to eachother, and let one of them branch off?

    Like this:

2nd Setup; There's an easier way too do it (my opinion).

There's no central station and people do not have to switch trains. Don't mind the texture issues.

    4_way_rail_intersection.png

And here's a simple 3 way intersection that I also like to use because it's compact.

A lot of setups you showed were making things more complicated than they have to be.

You gave good idea... I liked the 1st setup... Very realistic...

BTW one more question... from where did you or what did you use to get those circular endings of roads in 1st image?
