Hello, I'm not doing anything different than I normal do (at least I think), but every time I click the picture button the page wont work anymore. I can put in the link, but cannot push okay or close it out. I have to refresh the page.

Is this a bug or something on my end?

I feel silly, I think I just noticed at the bottom you can add pictures directly now >_<

Same here.I think it happened after I upgraded to IE11. I was going to ask the same question.

Ok to feel silly myself . How do you add pictures directly, apart from the attach file. These won't show in the text surely?

First I strongly urge everyone abandon Windows Internet Exploder.  I am using Firefox, but others use different browsers.

To load an image it must first be hosted at an image hosting site.  I have an account with Imgur.  You should store your off-site pictures as *.jpg files for speed.  Definition is not that different between .jpg and .png, so it is worth the conversion for speed.

Using the direct URL of your image, you can then use the image control (second line, 11 symbol from the left) and paste the image there.

An external host is definitely the best option to upload images.

The site storage quota is quite limited at 500kb, so is only really handy for small icons.

A brief summary of file formats:

JPG

Are ideal for photographs with considerable detail. Although JPGs are a lossy format, they have an excellent compression ratio. This means a high level of quality can be retained with maximum compression (reducing file size). So for the purpose of posting large images on the site, they would be preferred.

PNG

Can be useful for smaller images -- where detail and sharpness must be preserved. The file size of icons is pretty much negligible. An example of this is for web icons, which have a small file size (and can also be transparent). However as Nonny explained, larger PNG images will have a much greater file size (being a lossless format), in comparison to the JPG equivalent.

BMP

These don’t use any method of compression, meaning there's no loss in quality. In other words they're a 'raw' image format, making them fairly clumsy for web use.

Microsoft Paint can convert to all these formats. However, it doesn't always preserve quality that well. Paint.NET is a useful (free) alternative, which allows for more options in general. Also when saving, it can adjust compression ratios, balancing file size with image quality.

And GIF format can be used for small animations.  Both my signature and my avatar are GIFs, but beware of the file size restrictions.
