I'm curious!!

Are these plans or are they based on prebuilt cities?

What program are people using to produce them?

Thanks!

Well, mine was based on a pre-built, real-world place, hahaha. Thanks for the comments, that was the first map I've ever made I actually liked. First time using the GIMP, great program once you get the hang of it. I like maps that are to scale, even if they're a little ungainly, because they become your mental map of a place (see: NYC).

Is Inkscape easy to use? Could you do a tutorial for your maps?quote>

Glad you like it 4.gif

I suppose Inkscape is fairly easy to use - I'm self-taught, and haven't had to read a manual or tutorial yet. It has a habit of randomly crashing after an hour and a half or so, but its nothing that regular saves can't combat.

The maps themselves are fairly basic  - its more a matter or organising everything properly:

  • get a base image of your city to copy from SC4's data view - cut out the 256x256 map and import it into Inkscape
  • get the grid set right - I use 2 grid squares = 1 SC4 tile so I can snap to the centre or edges of a SC4 tile
  • sort out a layer structure - 1 thing per layer works best so you can lock/hide certain things if you have too. Mine goes bridges-trams-roundabouts-highways-rail-roads-streets-ped malls-tunnels-terrain-base image, but there will be more in the future, like labels, symbols etc.
  • start drawing. Pretty much all I use are bezier curves, so its simple point and click stuff with snap-to-grid on.
Here's what it looks like half-done, with the Road Traffic data view map as a base (I use different data views for trams, rail, and peds - hence why there is nothing under the rail lines here). I've done roads, bridges, rail, and roundabouts - streets are next:

There isn't one, at this point in time.

Meanwhile, I've got all the transit networks in 4.gif

Here is the final version of my map. Its small (its only one small city tile but its part of a larger region of about 4 million people). Its a suburb very close to the outskirts of the city on the west side of it. Enjoy! Oh and, that is amazing Joe 90! I wish I could be patient enough to make such a map.

Here it is:

(Note that the bus route is only what I would imagine it to be)

Is this one city tile, or a whole region? It looks pretty intense. It seems like you reserved a lot of green space in the core. I like that. I also like how you used the hills to create an East-West axis. Very cool. I'd love to see close-ups, and your mass transit network.

"Whether it be the sweeping eagle in his flight, or the open apple-blossom, the toiling work-horse, the blithe swan, the branching oak, the winding stream at its base, the drifting clouds, over all the coursing sun, form ever follows function, and this is the law."

—Louis H. Sullivan, "The tall office building artistically considered." Lippincott's Magazine, March 1896.
