NAM for dummies

I downloaded the NAM and I love al the new options that come with it, but I have no clue how to use the pieces. Every time I put them down, I can't get them rotated the right way and they don't drag like the default roads. I have read tutorial after tutorial and I still don't get it. I thought you were supposed to be able to drag avenue pieces? some of my cities are big and I need to relieve the congestion on my avenues. Is there a tutorial for dummies like me somewhere?

Some are and some aren't 'draggable'. It'll usually state "starter piece" in the menu description if it's draggable. Then you'll have to get used to the fact that sometimes you have to use pieces from multiple menus to complete the project.

NAM has a huge learning curve, so try and have fun learning and don't let it frustrate ya too much. You'll get the hang of it. I know, cause i'm in the same boat as you. It's not easy, but when you figure it out, it's actually a sense of accomplishment.

Would suggest using a sandbox region to play around in while you figure it out. Use the Extra Cheat Mod to keep your pockets fat enough to fund playing around with all the pieces. If you don't use the ECM, you can just exit/enter the city without saving to reset the funds.

You can change the traffic controller options with the Traffic Simulator Config Tool.  It should have created an icon on your desktop when you installed the NAM; if not, you can find it in C:\Program Files\Traffic Simulator Configuration Tool

And just play around with the NAM in a test city for a bit.  There's a lot of stuff, and it takes a while to get used to it, tutorials or no tutorials.

This isn't in my program files, is there somewhere else it might be?

No, you might not have chosen to install it in the NAM setup.  Re-run the setup and do a custom installation.  Make sure you choose the option "Build my own traffic simulator."

Actually this makes sense if this is the first time you've downloaded the NAM.

    - This is the TSCT (that comes with NAM) only this is a standalone version.  If you chose not to install it during NAM install, you can install it from this link.

Thanks guys. The NAM traffic subsystem is included in the most recent NAM build, so I will do a reinstall and add it from there. Thank you so much for your help. I will get this figured out! I have a college degree, dammit!

    Thanks again:)

There is copious documentation with the NAM including many specific files.  Here is the list that comes with version 31.2

    NAM_Documentation
    ├── 10A.Traffic_Plugin_Files.htm
    ├── 10B.Automata_Plugin_Files.htm
    ├── 10C.Data_View_Files.htm
    ├── 1.README.htm
    ├── 2.InstallationInstructionsFile.htm
    ├── 3.ContentsFile.htm
    ├── 4.HistoryFile.htm
    ├── 5.TechnicalNotesFile.htm
    ├── 7.Q&A.htm
    ├── 9.CreditsFile.htm
    ├── images
    ├── NAM31 Alternate Components Guide.pdf
    ├── NAM31 Users Manual.pdf
    ├── NAM Transit Stations Manual.pdf
    ├── NWM Users Manual.pdf
    ├── PS Users Manual.pdf
    └── RHW Users Manual.pdf

The README.htm and the associated numbered files are the installation guide and basic document in HTML format.  The pdf files are new with this edition.  This is a lot of reading, and the learning curve is quite steep.

The NAM has many features and if you take the default install you get most of them.  This will clutter up your menus quite a bit, and this takes some getting used to.

I do a custom install and exclude RHW and GLR features because I don't use them.  You might consider doing this kind of custom install to limit the vast array of stuff until you are ready for it.  Some in-knowledge is really needed to use some of the more exotic features.

Recommended immediate study would be the general Users Manual.

I am going to read all the docs again. I guess I just need to practice with it. That being said, I have noticed less problems with my networks so NAM is working. Thanks for all the help guys.

Good luck with this.  If you haven't create a sandbox region and practice, practice, practice.  It takes both knowledge and experience to get this all going.

btw: What is the reason for depending on the JRE for the TSCT? Why is there no independent version?

Ah, the ubiquitous JRE.  The TSCT is a Java JAR, and it needs the library the same as VS programs need the .NET library.  It is free, and it is one of those things that make Java program distribution and multi-platform programs possible.  You just need the native version of the JRE for your O/S and TSCT runs just fine.

Runs OK in native Linux for me unlike VS programs which have to run under wine with the mono package for the library.

If one is not a programmer, sometimes the reasons for this kind of thing can be rather obscure.

With the current proliferation of operating systems, the need is JRE for IOS and other phone systems.

All that is .exe could be exclusively Microshaft.
