It all depends on what games you like.

Personally, I prefer RPG's. And since Xbox is almost always giving RPG's the shaft, I'll be getting a PS3.

Focus on which console has the exclusive games you like and buy that one. Nothing else matters.

Actually, something else does matter (well, for most of us, at least.)

Xbox 360 = $399
Xbox 360 Core Components only = $299
PS3 = $465 - $600 (Still no official set price)

Preformance is similar, though the PS3's processor is far better than Xbox's, it has less RAM, so games complexity will top out much faster than that of the Xbox.

Also, Xbox has a better Graphics Card, so better there will be a diffrence there also.

But, like zelgadis said, it depends on the games you like, I personally like shooters, so I am definately going with the 360.

Also, I don't think I could ever imagine using a PS3's Controler, it is just so weird looking.

If you have the money, get both(obviously). But anyways i'd get Xbox 360 becuz it just seems better. It looks like it would have better graphics and you can add moe stuff on it than the PS3.

well, on the consoles, I'm a FPS fan, and the action/avnture games (ex: lego star wars). I'm also looking at the 360 because of Xbox live. i'll wait till this next summer when the 360's price goes down. 10.gif40.gif

Here are the advantages and disadvantages of both consoles, but before I get into that, lets get a few things corrected. Do realize that I am very excited about the Xbox 360 as I am getting one on Nov 22nd! I will get the PS3 sometime in the future as well.

Game Choice: The Xbox 1 is known for having less of a game choice than the PS2. However, expect a complete swap this time around. Developers are already commenting on the difficulty and much higher cost of developement for games of the PS3. PS3 games will cost anywhere from 4-6 times as much to develop as they did for the PS2. The PS3 uses an extrmely complicated architecture that just increases the difficulty. On the other hand the Xbox 360 is much easier and cheaper to develop for. Microsoft has been working for years on the new XNA developement software for the 360. Already, developers are switching over to the 360 as thier prefured platform. The Xbox 1 was microsofts start to the game market, and of course it initially lacked in game choice. That did change over time as more and more developers choose to develop for both the PS2 and Xbox 1.

Now the Xbox 360 will have a much broader base in Japan. Microsoft is focused on Japan right now. Expect to see more RPG's and JRPG's for the 360. Also, IMO one of the best RPG's ever is about to be released exclusively for the 360 (and PC). That title is Oblivion. I recommend going over to IGN and downloading the 5 parts to the 20 minite demonstration video. It's just amazing, and to think that what you see could run on 1/3 the power of the 360.

There will be tons more action/adventure titles for the 360. Gun, Condemned, 99 Nights, Lost Odyssey, and tons of new titles being announced. The 360 will equal the PS3 in this catagory.

Pay no attention to Perfect Dark Zero, as it is no longer Microsofts flagship title for launch. Instead, Microsoft heads seem to be REALLY impressed with a game by Rare called Kameo. I have high hopes for Kameo and expect this to be as good as the Zelda series for Nintendo.

In the end, the 360 and PS3 will be equal in game choice.

360 vs PS3 on system power:
The PS3 is not 2x as powerful as the 360. That rumor comes from Sony after they twisted a few numbers. Supposedly the PS3 has 2 TFLOPS (Tera(Trillion) Floating Point Operations/Second) and the Xbox 360 has only 1 TFLOP. According to this calculation most of the power comes from the Graphics Card (GPU). Apparently the PS3's GPU is 2.5x as powerful as the 360's. Everyone knows the 360's GPU is more powerfull. This is just an example of Sony twisting the numbers in thier favor. Sony just measured the power of thier GPU in a completely different way to come up with the higher numbers.

Yes, the PS3 is a little bit more powerful than the 360. But guess what? Rememeber how hard the PS3 is to develope for. The PS3's architecture is just so complicated that it will bottleneck its power. Don't be suprised when you can't tell the difference in games between the PS3 and the 360.

And don't believe all the videos you see about the PS3 games. There are no gameplay vids. That is just CGI. Does MGS4 look amazing? Yes, but Gears of War (because it is much farther in developement) looks far far better!

    Xbox 360
    Advantages:
-Xbox Guide: This is the ever present menu system of the 360. You push the Xbox button in the middle of the controller and it opens the 360 user interface. From thier you can do anything you Xbox is capable of doing. You can play music, videos, view pictures, and access them all from your computer via a wireless (or wired of you choose) network. You can access Xbox Live, you can have sound/video messages with your friends. Microsoft will excell in this area big time because they are really software programmers. This is what they do.

-Xbox Live: If you have access to broadband (or will have access later) Xbox live is just amazing. The 2nd version of Xbox live for the 360 will be really amazing. I never really liked playing games over the internet until I tried Xbox live. It is just so feature rich and easy to use that Sony will never top it. Again, this is because Microsoft's specialty is software programming.

-Controller: The new 360 controller is being widely criticially acclaimed as one of the best console controllers ever. Believe me, the wireless version of the controller is just so comfortable and perfect. I couldn't imagine a better controller!

    Disadvantages:
No HD-DVD drive: Because next-gen DVD technology is still in developement, Microsoft has been unable to provide HD-DVD support for the 360. Instead, Dual-Layer DVD's will be used. This could limit the size of games. However, take a look at the gamecube and it's small disk. Nintendo is able to do that because of some very impressive compression technology. Microsoft will do the same thing. However, when the PS3 is released, Microsoft will likely release a new version of the 360 that will include HD-DVD support for movies (but not for games).

    Playstation 3:

    Advantages:
Blue-Ray Support: This is the next-gen DVD format that Sony will go with. These disks will hold much much more than 360 disks. This could allow for a lot more game content.

HDMI and 1080p suuport: This will allow the PS3 to run at much higher resolutions and have better picture quality while doing it. However, the 360 will likely support HDMI later down the road (probably when the PS3 comes out).

Not a lot is known about the PS3 as it is still at least 6 months away from release, so I don't know all the advantages. Only Sony does. The fact that they start later could mean that they can steal the best ideas of thier competition and use it in the PS3. However, if they don't implement these features very well it could backfire.

    Disadvantages:

Made by Sony: What I mean by this is that Sony has a tendency to over-promise and then underdeliver on thier consoles. Dual-HDMI support? Who cares! I will never use this feature. It could be usefull 10 years from now, but the PS3 will only be a memory by then. Support for up to 7 controllers? Why would I want to split a TV screen up 7 ways? I get to look at my 4 inch by 7 inch section! I don't think I really want to do that! 4 controllers is way for than enough for me, especially with Xbox live available.

The Boomerang (PS3 Controller): What was Sony thinking? My guess is this: You can turn the 360 by pushing a button on the wireless controller. Well how about we make ours a boomerang. Throw it towards the PS3 powerbutton and then it comes back to you!

    Seriosly! What was Sony thinking?

I agree, because I don't know iof you like the new one, but I think it's ugly.. TRhe old one was nice, small, and it was very easy in playing different kind of games... If I would buy PS3, I would definietly look also for at least one ps2 style controller... 2.gif

No, it's for when we throw our controller at the wall in frustration... and it comes back. Nifty, don't you think? 3.gif

But the fact that its wireless makes it easy to lose... And the *shudders* batteries.

Any Xbox is the largest possible waste of money, ever. I have had it replaced 5 times in 2 years, and i play it approximately once a week. That is sad. I have had my PS2 for nearly 6 years, and it has not given me 1 problem! It has been dropped, kicked, drop kicked, and punted into obvilion, yet it still keeps going.

Yet, I've had my PS2 for 5 years and I've had to replace it 2x. Luckily both times were under warrenty so it didn't cost me a thing except the extra cost of the warrenty. I've had my xbox for 3 years and I haven't had a single problem with it.

My point is that EVERY console has it's problems.

According to the people at G4TV, the PS2 is the console that is most likely to get damaged and quit working.  The did a test on console stregth and I will (basically) reiterate how it went.

    TEST 1

The lady doing the test got a twenty pound weight and dropped it on the console.  The weight was dropped from about chest height.

    Results
    • PlayStation 2 -- The weight hit the console (which was on its bottom) and bounced off.  The PS2 failed to turn on.  Hence, the PS2 was declared dead.
    • Xbox -- The weight clipped the front of the console and cracked the face plate.  However, the Xbox still turned on, and it passed on to the next round.
    • GameCube -- The GC was hit and promptly flipped upside down.  It still would turn on, so it passed to the next round.

    TEST 2

The consoles were hit by an eight pound sledge hammer.

    Results

    • Xbox -- The Xbox did nothing more than slide about eight feet and rotate in the process.  It turned on and proceded to the next round.
    • GameCube -- The GC rolled all the way across the floor, approximately twenty feet.  However, it did turn on and continued to the next round.

    TEST 3

The Xbox and the GameCube were dropped from a height of about twelve feet onto concrete.

    Results

    • Xbox -- The faceplate of the Xbox broke off, hence there was no normal way to turn it on.  It was considered dead.
    • GameCube -- The GC did turn on, however, the CD lid didn't close properly.  Despite this, the GC was crowned the winner.

G4TV ran the tests twice, and in both cases, the results were exactly the same.  I dispute the results about the GC on one charge, though.  Since the CD lid didn't close properly, the GC's CD drive should not have worked if they had set up the safety overrides properly.  Dolfan, personally, I think that you had a lemon, but the moajority of what I have heard is that the Xbox is a really sturdy product, albeit as big as a land mine.47.gif

As for whether the Xbox 360 is going to be better than the PS3, well, it's way to early to tell.  I'd go with the Xbox 360, partly because some of my favorite games run only on it (Halo to name a title).  All I need right now is the money.34.gif

I'm thinking about the 360, I'll get it when the PS3 comes out (that's when the price drops).
I'm mainly looking at the 360 because of XBlive. FPS games like Battle front II are my prime target.

What do you do to your consoles? I always considered Xbox's to be the console incarnation of a tank!

Yeah, I suppose you did get 5 lemons - I bought my Xbox a couple months after it came out, and it still works flawlessly. My PS2 is collecting dust.

In fact, the only problem I have ever had in the 4 years (I think) I have had my Xbox was with the Xbox live communicator, I have snapped about 3 of those darn things.

If you are an FPS fan, you will want Revolution. You'll be able to just point at the enemies like you would a real gun instead of using primitive analog sticks. Pffft.

The problem is, if not done correctly, that feature could turn the revolution into an incredibly bad console... think duck hunt with better graphics.

Anyway, the Xbox 360 is comming out in a matter of hours here! I won't be getting it for a while, but it is exiting. I hear the 360's OS is really mind blowing for a console.
