There are no rules or laws for version numbers and every company chooses their own way to go. However, MS (IMO) uses it the right way. By 9.0 the game should be playable without strenuous workarounds.

Yea only a handful of companies tend to use it properly.

Why they went with this numbering system is unclear, but I don't believe it was to be maliciously deceitful... it has been widely known that there were/are a lot of problems and issues--especially at launch--and a +1.0 version increase helps signify that underlying simulation mechanics have changed, whereas that wouldn't come across quite as clearly with a +0.1 increase.

So, if it still really bothers you, just do what I do and mentally prepend a "1." to the version numbers. :)

I think their doing it to try and save face. As the vast majority are casual and don't understand the underlying mechanics. So a BIG SHINY number makes it all okay. haha I'm working on version 2.2 of my iphone app which fixes the sizing issue on iphones with 3.5 screens and ipads. But if i was maxis, I'd probably bump it to 3 to make people feel better.

it's american, psychology.... ;)

It has nothing to do with types of people.

I mean thanks to Google most browser updates are now full number releases.

Now all the browsers do this and FireFox just released FF21!

Most people think bigger number = better!

Even Microsoft knows this, just look at what they did with Windows:

  • Windows 6.0 = Vista
  • Windows 6.1 = W7
  • Windows 6.2 = W8

Yes those are the official numbers of the latest 3 Windows releases (which you can find in BIOS menu).

I mean Microsoft could have released Windows 7 and 8 as service packs for Vista, but they sold more by launching them as a new Windows OS.

I think you're misinterpreting how those versions numbers relate to the rest of the operating system. Those only refer to the Windows Kernel, the layer running below the GUI/user mode, essentially handling all of the interfacing between with the system hardware, I/O, etc. and really has little to do with the environment users see and interact with in the OS. A small Incremental version increase of the NT Kernel doesn't reflect only small/minor changes in the operating system as a whole. From Vista to Win7, the NT Kernel version may have only increased by +0.1 but the user environment running atop the kernel was drastically overhauled and improved. Those improvements primarily were due to an overhauling the user entire environment--not from the changes between the NT 6.0 and NT 6.1 kernels.

Both Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 are built atop the NT 6.2 kernel but they are not the same operating systems. Operating systems are quite more than its kernel: Android phones run on a Linux kernel, yet the Android OS is far different from the Ubuntu, Debian, and Fedora operating systems which also run on a Linux kernel.

Comparing versioning systems and numbers among different programs/systems/developers is comparing apples and oranges grasshoppers 17th-Century French architecture: they are abstract. They really only have meaning in distinguishing itself from previous iterations as a point of reference to itself so griping about how they increment their versions just seems a bit futile as long they remain consistent in their method. I guess I don't really get why the numbering bothers so many people... but it just occured to me that maybe it's a sign that with all of these updates, people are actually running out of problems and issues in the game to complain about?  :P

(And I'd rather listen to complaints about their versioning system anyday over complaints about small maps sizes and asking when they're going to make the cities bigger... :noway:  )

What happened to my post complaining about the small and non contiguous tiles?  I really hate that Simtropolis has now become a place where censorship reigns.  I have a valid complaint and the mods just scrub it.

Might have been moved that is what that topic is for. It's not censorship; it's organization.

So how is Simcity 2013 shaping up? I was pretty hard on it pre-release, and am still disappointed in the map size. But if that is something they are working on I am encouraged. But in order for me to even justify purchasing it, it needs to out shine 4 and I don't see that happening until large cities and mod support make their way in.

Mod support being most important, as it keeps the game relevant once the parent company moves on.

Don't now about mods, but about this time next year should be a playable game.

But in order for me to even justify purchasing it, it needs to out shine 4...

That would all really depend on how you define "outshine" but if you're using SC4 as the benchmark then I would guess that, to you, it will never "outshine" SC4 because SC13 is more game than simulation, reallyWhether or not it's enjoyable all depends on your mindset and expectations. If you play it like a simulation, you'll be sadly disappointed--and likely very frustrated--when things do not work the way you expected.

But it can be quite enjoyable if you approach it for what it is: a game. That includes adjusting your strategy and trying different approaches based the game mechanics in order to achieve the desired results.

Just don't pay full retail. Even as a "game" it still isn't that good...  If anything, at least wait until Amazon has it on sale for $40 or so. And whatever you do: do NOT pay extra for the Limited Edition version because the extra content's really not worth the extra $20.... maybe $5 but that's still pushing it.

I wasn't having any problems with my buildings flickering. Not sure of the video card I have although its not the original. Nevertheless I've been seeing lines through my screen ever since the 3.0 update. Not really bugging me yet but I noticed its definitely there. And the 4.0 fix did not fix it. If anything it's worse.

That was for NVidia cards and mine did flicker. Haven't noticed it since. Try changing your settings.
