Building dimensions

Good day fellow Mayors,

I am trying to figure out the exact sizes for each of the densities, zones and wealth levels. I.E. low wealth/density residential is 1wide by 2 deep.

I think the smallest an actual "I" building (with workers) can be is about 3-4 individual clicks wide on a street.

I have sometimes seen a minimum size of "R" being 2 homes sharing what was initially one single click.

"C" smallest is usually 1 click each.

As far as largest go, I am uncertain.

The problem with that question is that 1 "click" is never the same size.  Well, I should say that sometimes it's "low density" wide, and sometimes it's "medium density" wide, but the second one of those is not twice as wide as the first.

"Deep" is given to you by the guide lines.

Beyond that, it's all guessing and adjusting

As far as largest go, I am uncertain.

When mapping out my zones, when I want high density/high wealth C & R, I use the soccer field as a place holder.  It is the same size as those buildings.  Unfortnately the snap to grid issues don't let you be as precise as I would like, so sometimes there is a small zoned slice leftover that I will dezone if it develops.

I'm pretty sure the largest industrial building exceeds the largest C & R size.

Let me help you with that, I have had a lot of experience dealing with setting up proper zones. The first thing you have to remember that roads control the zone in a way that isn't exact.

That chart is extremely helpful, especially if you are trying to make a compact city.

Until you get to thinking about how Industrial looks and it is all kinds of crazy

EDIT

I have discovered if you interchange R and C zones you can really make things compact. Plop R, wait until a foundation is placed, DEZONE, and zone C right next to it, Sometimes a building will be smaller then the zone and if the placement is right, you can dezone, and plop a new zone where the re once was a partial section of a different zone. Did that make any sense?

It did to me. Your talking about not wasting space on parking lots. Those are the ones that use the extra zone space. The only thing is that the buildings seem to be different exactly by those parking lots, or that extra zone space, so you might end up with a lot of the same buildings one next to each other. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Edit: BTW why is this thread in Concepts & Experiments ?

The concepts of building and managing your city including game experiments. I felt that understanding building sizes would fall under building and managing a city.

Edit: As for the picture you linked I don't fully understand it. What is the difference between each $ value? (I am guessing blue is C and green is R)

First thing, $ - low wealth, $$-medium wealth, $$$- high wealth. Second, the lines below the $ and parallel to the street(black line) shows you is it a low or medium/high density. The difference is that there are multiple size of buildings for the same wealth level. Those different zone sizes also can be combined in different ways into bigger buildings or buildings of different wealth level.

Just because the land value is medium or high doesn't mean that your zone tool will always be creating zones for those wealth level buildings. Also if a building in a medium or high land value plot doesn't have enough room / zone to build a $$ or $$$ wealth level building it will build a $ wealth building.

pera' mate, I hate to be the thick guy, but I'm sitting here reading your text and squinting at the chart; this is making me feel intellectually inadequate, and I don't like it. I recall in one of your vids that you were starting and stopping things, zoning and un-zoning like the king of the OCDs. This is what's being discussed here I'm sure. Can you point me at the vid again, or even better make another dedicated one where you speak much more slowly.

On the chart it looks to me that two medium and one low wealth buildings are equivalent to two low wealth buildings! But they look bigger! Come on mate; dumb it down.

"King of OCDs" ahhahahah I laughed so hard, and mostly because its so true :)

Yeah, I do talk about it in my videos quite often, because it's a constant problem, but it would be a good idea to brake it down in one video and try to make it as simple as possible to understand and set up in your own cities. I will get on that in a day or two.

OK, I looked some more and it is making more sense to me. I think I have somewhat of a grasp of the relevant widths and depths equivalencies facing the road (black line).

I vid' would be helpful however. Discussing, why bother, relevant sizes - along the road, as well as back from the road, how to control and get what you want, why does it seem to me that the zone colour sizes as you click and paint have a mind of their own? etc. Q's like, how many more 'thin' R's would be satisfied by one 'fat' C s with a big bottom than some other amount of small bottomed C's...  spring to mind.

I'll look forward to the vid' man.
