I keep planting trees around my high wealth neighborhood and in no time they're gone.  What's going on here?

Trees negate pollution. The more ground & air pollution you have in an area, the faster the trees will absorb it and die (disappear). The best example I can give is when you plant tress to make heavy ground pollution disappear. The trees quickly disappear along with a percentage of the pollution.

I'd heard this before, but there is no pollution where they're planted.

Trees don't last long, you have to keep replanting them. They didn't last forever in SC4 either but, they lasted longer than an hour.  :)

Definition of success; like getting the juice from an orange, just suck and suck until you suck seed.

And this game just gets stupider by the minute

Now now ... lets be fair, the game has always been stupid and it is only now that we are understanding why, like an autopsy on a soon-to-be Darwin award recipient.

Well, the leaves keep getting in the lawns of the high wealth home owners, and they really don't like that.  So they call an Arborist and he cuts down the trees and turns it into woodchips to line the flower beds of the high wealth home owners.

I recommend planting trees that won't shed leaves.

    :D

Don't they disperser with the seasons? If you watch they turn orange in Autumn and then die off in winter.
