According to this thread on Reddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/SimCity/comments/1c4af5/hulk_smash_glassbox/), a user has found a way to plop buildings outside city borders.

In his own words:

Atm its kind of a ghetto application of outside the box building and I'm not sure if its really release quality, had to put my work on this on hold 'cause I had some other stuff to take care of but will be trying to sort that out later tonight.

And here's a screenshot: https://i.imgur.com/KAk5TU9.jpg

Well, I guess that's a start. :)

One of the toughies is going to be getting zoning to work outside the borders though, and the restricted camera. But it's a good start.

Then again, if Maxis releases bigger maps for free...

Good old modders; where there's a way there's a modder!

Dear sir/madam/whoever will read this!

This profile is now defunct.

Computer problems and issues with accessing my Imageshack account meant My SC4 CJ Scrapbook was lost and utterly irretrievable. This setback put me off SC4 for many months.

Apologies for the inconvenience and for the lost pictures.

But that SC4 itch did not go away and it had to be scratched! I have started afresh with a new account here- The British Sausage

The URS is a spiritual successor to the SC4 CJ Scrapbook.

With this update this will be the last time I visit my original Simtropolis account- admin/mods feel free to remove it or do whatever you need to do. I have no further use for the Ln X (BLANKBLANK) account.

With regards, Miles Saunders-Priem aka. Ln X aka. The British Sausage

If that works it will save so much space inside the cities for the actual city. Not the services but the zones.

Yep, just like I thought larger cities were going to be done. Mod the buildings to ignore the borders.

I think the camera won't be a huge issue. Camera mods for 3D games have never seemed to be particularly hard to do.

What is it about zones that makes them not work outside the border though? Or makes it harder to make it work atleast?

not sure about  outside city borders, like Highway mod,you can build it outside and connect to other cities and cars actually moving between cities but the game not recognizing that you are connected when you go to region view or to G. work site....

Sadly the camera limit doesn't seem to be controlled directly by the javascript. It seems to be handled by the game itself which isn't mode able. Id say there's about 30-40% chance well be able to expand the camera limit

While I figured that something like this might be possible at some point, I wouldn't get too excited about being able to build things outside the city border. Even if the camera limit is removed, this still won't mean that the entire region is suddenly open for building - it's not as if Maxis only fenced off an arbitrary square of land where you're allowed to build a city; everything outside the city borders does not contain the 'map' information for terrain height, water table, pollution etc. Most noticeably, this means that nothing you build outside the city borders will conform to the underlying terrain - roads will not dig into the terrain and buildings will not flatten the ground under them.

So while I'm happy that it's possible to place objects in the region, we're still far away from larger city sizes.

Unfortunately city services do not work outside the map.  Power/water doesn't flow under the roads placed outside the map :-(

They appear to not visibly show the power outline but in a couple of my cities I have hospitals/police/etc placed in spots where the power appears to cut off but they pull the power through the street anyways as it shows through the connection at the building (pic in op: https://i.imgur.com/chggAcQ.jpg shows the prostadium and such powered and active)

. They are iffy with how far from the road they will pull power though. I really need to make a guide clearing some of the ranges up
