It's a step forward, but probably at this point costs a fortune.  Basically using genetically modified material to fight back against genetic errors caused by UV exposure.  Melanoma is one of the most common and can be quite fatal.

When Albert Einstein first proposed both the Special and General Theories of Relativity they were the result of a 'gedanken experiment' (thought experiment), and subsequent verification by Rutherford and others showed that we are dealing with the Laws of Relativity.

 

Have we now got the cart before the horse?  Are we hoping the LHC, which is a thing not a mind, will produce some facts(?) that might point in a new direction?  This article seems to imply that hitting things with an ever bigger hammer will turn up something unforeseen.  But what makes people think this is the case?

 

It sure would be nice if they could unravel magnetism and gravity, but don't hold your breath.

A few more words for the layman on current Physics theories.

 

"It's always darkest before the dawn".  All this is getting so complicated that a breakthrough must be in the offing.  I have a feeling that when it happens there will be a simple expression similar to E=mc².

 

Will it happen in my lifetime?  Probably not, seeing I have at most 20+ years to go at most, but some of you reading this may be driving a car that has no wheels.

Attempting to make a quantum computer that can be trusted may be the end of the Quantum Theory and change it into something else.  I don't have enough mathematics to understand those abstruse expressions that go into all this, but this is so far away from digital computing that it falls into the same class as searching for the Unified Field Theory.  My gut tell me that this is an NP complete problem.

If that is ice, is says something about there being an atmosphere.  Otherwise, partial pressure of ice being what it is, the whole works should just evaporate into space.

There has been some local cheering in little San Antonio, Texas, for the Southwest Research Institute headquartered here leads the science team for the New Horizons mission, and was intimately involved in its planning and design.  Tom Slick, Jr., heir to a Texas oil tycoon and a prominent 1950s adventurer, set aside a fortune from the family business in the 1940s to found the Southwest Research Institute for applied physical science and engineering and the Texas Biomedical Research Institute (formerly Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research), both important non-profit research and development institutions based in San Antonio.  Along with their vast mother laboratory campus here, Southwest Research has research facilities now across the U.S., with their Boulder, Colorado, division leading the Pluto and Kuiper Belt investigation.  Tom Slick spent lots of oil money searching for the Yeti and the Loch Ness Monster, and was enmeshed with fellow engineering investor Howard Hughes and even the CIA, but we can now add to his colorful legacy the seeds for the New Horizons probe through the Pluto-Charon system.

Transcribing things to a keyboard is indeed "in one ear and out the other".  I attended school in the era before portable computers, and taking notes was pretty much required.  Developed a private shorthand.  If I didn't read and transcribe my notes by the end of the week, I could no longer read them with any accuracy.  Fortunately most of the material was in the textbooks.

Yet another symptom of the end of the Capitalist supply/demand system.  Priced out of the market?  Lives are at stake, so we are now putting a price on life?

New blood tests in minutes instead of days.

This testing method is inexpensive but needs to go from the lab to bench/production.  They'll need a partner.  One who won't see a quick financial kill.

As a diabetic who uses a glucometer daily to estimate glucose levels, an instrument like this that could detect the A1C level rather than ambient glucose would be very useful.
