Cool cars! Are they made of carbon composites?

I have no idea. The Greek media didn't gave more informations about those cool concepts and focused only in their designer... because he is Greek.

CERN: LHC finds the heavyweight

Probably the most important verification of a theory since relativity. Next stop: Gravitons.

Well then, looks like the LHC has proved its worth! For more than just giving helicopters cancer. :P

All physicists on the world celebrate! The God-particle is found

They don't know if it actually IS the particle they're looking for, but it's the most promising find so far. They're still working out what properties it has, we'll find out before long where it fits in the Standard Model (hopefully it is the particle they are looking for), I think.

I, for one, am looking forward to seeing what tech they can squeeze out of this new discovery. Hopefully we get our promised hoverboards (soon :P), but of course that depends on whether its properties can be used to build fancy stuff like that. :P

Omigosh, the "

Maybe this day will be historic for the physics.

A groaner is that the U.S. might have discovered the Higgs Boson almost twenty years ago had it pushed through the completion of the Texas Superconducting Super Collider, but, given the hapless politics of national science, we opted instead for a vast, multi-billion dollar hole in the ground. I remember the agonized despair at the time that we were ceding away a generation of the most advanced scientific entrepreneurship due to bipartisan disinterest.

I love Neil deGrasse Tyson! I'm reading his book right now! (Space Chronicles... it's an awesome read)

So much for the Superconducting Supercollider, but least we have the LHC! It seems to work just fine :P

    Now this is very important.

I am not overwhelmed by the fact that the test subject will be Dr. Hawking. However, what is being done is vitally important to many people who are in a similar situation of being locked up in their minds by some accident or disease. I can't think of a more horrible thing than being perfectly lucid and having no way to communicate with the outside world. Many probably go mad before very long.

News about the Mars Science Laboratory (Curiosity Rover)

We're only days away from the touchdown!

The landing of NASA's new Mars rover, Curiosity, will be broadcast live in New York City's Times Square. Viewable on the two giant Toshiba Vision LED screens, touchdown is scheduled to take place at 1:31am EDT on Monday morning. Officially named the "Mars Science Laboratory," the rover will land in Gale Crater and will spend at least two years searching for habitats that could have supported life in the past.

Curiosity is the heaviest and most complex rover ever built, and requires the most complicated (and dangerous) landing procedure ever attempted. Check out this NASA video explaining the rover's "Seven Minutes of Terror". Due to the finite speed of light and the great distance to Mars, we will have to wait a full seven minutes to learn if Curiosity has landed safely.

Dozens of places around the US will be hosting landing events. To find events near you, visit:

    Two fascinating items this morning.

    Zap.

This is certainly one reason why one should worry the bones of discovery. A new set of sensors with much higher sensitivity at room temperature is a considerable boon to medical science.

Now if a really powerful version of a maser could be made hand portable, we wouldn't have to worry much about fire-arms. You'd either have a blaster or a zat-gun.

    Sure shot with walnuts.

In couples trying to procreate, more Waldorf salads are in order followed by a maple-walnut ice cream sundae.

    male fertility

    *facepalm*

BBC, shame on you. I expect better from you than this. There is no such thing as "male fertility". Indeed, when one analyzes the term, it is quite absurd. Men do not get seeds planted in them, they are the ones that do the planting. The term you are looking for is "virility". :read: Else we might as well just refer to testicles as "male ovaries".

Anyways, it is quite appropriate that it would be a form of nuts that would be found to have this effect.

this is a good step in makeing the MRI type smaller and more portable scanners is a great idea.

wonder how many more "old" ideas are ready for a re look.

Just think how you could precision cook with it. :P

Personally, I'm curious if they can do the same thing with UV ("Vaser"?). Then you could give people freckles!

Of course, I'm sure there would be plenty of uses for both that are not just amusement...

I wouldn't expect this to find its way to a hospital near you any time soon. There are concerns about inadvertently cooking or irreversibly blinding the patient, both of which are things that microwaves excel at doing.

I gather that these instruments will be of very low power, and probably not strong enough to excite the molecules into a heated state.

It doesn't take much power. A household microwave is enough to send someone blind and defense contractors have already demonstrated a hand held microwave deterrent system that can boil the water in your skin.

I doubt the instruments will be using anything like the 1.2 Kw that my cooker uses. Somehow, I expect the energy to be measured in milliwatts.

    Zoonosis

The zoo-keepers had better keep close track of this. The article states that there was a human vector in the chain. Who knows what you get exposed to when visiting the zoo?

    Wow, hot stuff!

    Environment.

Linking to the events in the Arctic to any man-made CO2 is inappropriate to the say the least. Clearly this reporter has all for the spin and not much for the facts. Wait till the permafrost starts releasing CH4, Nellie. Then the fat will truly be in the fire.

    Human Genome.

No more "junk DNA" after this. The switches are distant to the controlled gene. So what? A computer program often has a set of switches (flags) that are quite separate from the subroutines they control. I think that in the end there will just enough DNA to do the job once the scientific community figures it out. Keep up the good work!

A friend of mine spent the summer in Iqaluit (Nunavut) and he said that the melting ice this year was so bad the ice flows blocked some shipping channels to other towns. These small, isolated communities rely on cargo ships in the summer for resupply but they could not be reached. Air freight is the only option, and that's insanely expensive.

It also got up to 22 degrees (Celsius) one day... +20 is unheard of for Iqaluit.
