Really? Correct me if I am wrong here, but isn't this set-up going to cause MEGA traffic backups?  Isn't the rule for SC13 AI to have no 4 way intersections and no cul-de-sacs?

It sucks. I tried it out, I meant to put, "Please don't post crappy designs like this one."

im to lazy to post a picture of my lay out but if you imagine a brick wall my city is layed out like bricks are layed out...

the main streets are high density...thats the streets people build on and intersecting streets are medium density... there are no 4 way intersections all 3 way and no street lights as the medium density side streets have a stop sign in order to let the main traffic flow....staggered bus stops every block far from the intersections to avoid back ups....

    works for me every time...

in my casino city the map isn't condusive to this brick layout for the most part but all my main streets are high density...and if a side street would be a waste of area at medium density...i just upgrade the medium denisty to high...and delete one section next to the intersection and rebuild it as medium density to avoid the street light...traffic flows wonderfully and it all flows out to a circle / roundabout that connects to the highway connection to the region...

Here is one thing I have been using quite successfully. I am showing you two composite screen shots, City A (power overlay) and City B (no overlay).

City A was my first city in this region, so only one part of the road network was done properly because of money shortage. That is what I am showing you just this right side of it. The point is that by using natural hills that are on the right edge of the map I was able to create one bridged road and one ground road with an overpass over the main highway line that enters my city. [look at screenshot, then go back to reading]

All the people that live on this right side go to the edge of the map into an avenue from which they can go onto one of the two avenues that go over the highway into the city.

The circle on the top side connects that bridged ovepass with the main highway, while on it have placed a grade and a high school. The extra half ring on the bottom of the ring is so that traffic can go around the line of school busses or high schools student cars as they go into the school.[look at screenshot, then go back to reading]

Below that are the police, fire and clinic, hospital on two parallel roads that are connected by one road to the main highway and the rest of the city on the left.

After that we have the curved road that allows for people that are entering the city to go to the right side of the map while being able to take in the main traffic about 1/3 of the way into the city.

Now for the second city, city B. This one was the last city in this 5 city region, and I spent about 500,000 arranging the traffic and roads.

This one is different in some ways.

On top of the city you can again see a raised bridged road [look at the screenshot the come back], again the same thing like in City A, an avenue on the right edge of the map that connects with two raised bridged avenues that go over the main city highway. But this time there are two extra avenues parallel to the main city highway and to the right one of those two the right part of the city has several connections.

The middle main city highway stays untouched after connections at the entrance to the other two avenues until the exit where it is also connected to both of them.[look at the screenshot the come back]

The circle in the middle connects to the left avenue parallel to the main city highway and the other two parts of the city. The left shore of the river and the bottom of the map where the train stations are.

One thing i find usefull when i layout my main avenues is to never zone directly on the avenue itself. It avoid congestion when people are trying to get out of the buildings. You should try it out

I liked @perablenta's 1st city layout best, I always have problems with people entering and exiting my city, in my latest game I was doing a gambling city and found it usefull to use high density on all my avenues (where my casinos are at) and medium density on all other roads so that cars on the avenues have the right-of-way, plus I heard that in gambling cities your suppose to keep your population low, so that worked out too, although the medium density roads have high congestion because they can't get on the avenues, those aren't tourists and I'm not making money off them so it doesn't really matter that their backed up, lol

I tried to take a screen shot but im pc illiterate lol so i couldnt find the picture! Iv tried so many different things but everytime i get stupid amounts of traffic! Am definatly going to try the medium density trick in hope otherwise im at the end of my teather with this game and its stupid AI

Has anyone played around with roundabouts much? Round part = high density street, all connecting streets = medium density. I toyed around with a small roundabout yesterday for a little bit in a very small city (6k) and it worked well. I'm wondering if they work well in bigger cities....40k+......100k+..... It seemed to keep the traffic moving quite well, so I'm curious how well a roundabout might work coming off the main highway entrance. Not necessarily right by the highway connection, but extending the connection halfway into your city then doing the roundabout. If anyone wants to try it go for it and follow up with the results. I'm at work, so I can't give it a whirl until later.
