Give it some time.   If you have just plopped down the recycling center, it will take a bit of time before your residents start to recycle (as long as they are educated).   This is normal.

Just like TuPhat told you.

And on that note, if you use a high school it will increase the amount of recycling by a lot.

The educational building you use doesn't determine the amount of recycling you have, enrollment percentage determines this. You need to enroll a high percentage (ideally 100%) of your kids in your town into schools, and with their education they cause the houses of which they belong to start to be more aware of your recycling center. The higher your education (1-5 books) and the longer they've been educated (like if you started to have education yesterday, you won't have much demand for recycling today) will determine how many people recycle. I bet collection percentage also plays a roll where if you have a lot of people who want to recycle but never actually collect it, eventually they'll stop recycling, or maybe I'm wrong on that.

Thank-you for clarifying that Rhadamant5186.   I never took the time to figure out the mechanics behind recycling, just that you needed educated sims.   So to reach the highest potential output for a recycling center for your city, a person needs to increase the total amount of education so that you have 100% enrollment, to achieve 5 books per se.  Not taking into account the number of recycling trucks and their efficiencies, etc.    I may need to look at my cities again and tweak this.  Thx!

I had a city with no recycling center but everyone was recycling? Is this from neighbors? Does excess recycling make people unhappy?

Ok, Assuming that your city has plenty of educated Sims generating recyclable waste, and that your Recycling Center has proper road access and power and water, then you need a couple more things. First of all, you need trucks to pick up the bins that your Sims are leaving out for you--add garages for them if your existing recycling trucks are unable to make the rounds and collect from everywhere before the day ends. You will also need enough delivery trucks at the Recycling Center to carry away the recovered Metal, Alloy, and Plastic and take it either to your factories (Processor or Electronics plant) or to export at a trade depot/port. Finally, you will need enough processing modules at the Recycling Center to handle the waste stream--each one will consume X tons of waste and output Y tons of recovered material (you can choose between Metal, Alloy, or Plastic recovery modules). This last bit is important, because if your Recycling Center's waste storage is full, it will stop accepting further waste until it has digested what it has, and if its storage area for the recovered metal/alloy/plastic is full, then it will stop processing until a truck can empty that as well. In sum, a Recycling Center works just like any of the City Specialization factories, only its input is the collected waste and its output is the recovered material.

when i first learned the pros of it i sent trucks from another smaller city into my bigger city...it all spiraled out of control because i was only sending like 8 trucks over to a city of 240k.....i fell so behind I had to build 2 plants in the bigger city to get rid of it all...in total i had 48 trucks 16 from two other citys trying to catch up on it

I haven't played in a while, but have they fixed the bug that breaks your recycling center after a while?

Trying an experiment in a new city I've just started.

  1. Region is highly populated and educated
  2. Region has more total recyclables that can currently be handled by the existing cities, even with multiple recycle centres, processing plants, blah, blah...
  3. New city in progress has very low population ... almost nothing there yet. No industrial zoned. Very little R/C ... a one store town!

I plopped a recycle center and maxed the collection trucks.

Went to region menu and shared every last one of them with another city I know to have more than enough recyclables.

Watched a number of collection cycles to see what would happen - every last truck went to the few houses I have, NONE of them left my city to go to the other. Less than one hour (game time) and they're all back in the garages while uncollected recyclables in the city I shared my trucks with continue to pile up.

Ideas?

Are you sure that they aren't collecting all the bins and just getting off work early? I've been watching the mechanics on recycling for a while in several cities an it seems to me the trucks aren't the problem it's the stat that seems to be messed up.

For instance, one city says it has 16,000 bins to collect a day, and with two fully staffed recycling plants I'm only able to collect 6,500. Yet my trucks will start picking up at 5am and are off the road by 11am. At first when I introduced the recycling center the trucks were going like crazy all day long. Now only half the day yet I have no trash piling up or ground pollution. So I believe that the 16,000 is just the total amount of bins and not the amount of bins needed to be collected. Another reason for this is watching the routes that the 32 trucks actually take where at first they are spreading out all over the city and now the majority of them will follow one another. In my opinion they are doing that because there is less recycling available to collect. Now I realize I haven't fully tested this out but intend to where I shut down the plants for a few days and watch the patterns after I reopen them again.

After letting things run for awhile and just watching ... something seems amiss..

My two recycle centers now are at 100% strorage of recyclable materials, but don't seem to be converting them. What little has been converted, is just sitting there.

Trade Centre next door has almost zero plastic/metal/alloy in storage, none is being delivered, and though I've got export on for everything, there's not a single truck showing up to take anything. It just sits there.

So the whole system, which I was planning on profits for financing other things (it's working great in a city elsewhere...), is just sitting there costing a fortune every hour and producing nothing in return ..

Also, my recycling collection trucks are finally moving to shared cities in the region, but I'm not sure what they're doing either. 10 trucks will go to a city overflowing with recycle bins (over 28,000 of them). Out of the ten trucks, ONE will fill up and return full, the others just clog up traffic for a bit, and then return empty! ... and leave over 15,000 bins of recyclables untouched.

I've shut all the facilities off for several game days, then turned them back on. No change.

I've also bulldozed all of them a time or two and rebuilt. Same result. Luckily I've got the funding to do that, but it's getting expensive...

Meanwhile my idyllic seaside residents that weren't planning on having to pay any taxes are getting nervous about the city budget...

Yea I have a few more specifics. So I don't know what exactly to make of it whether the recycling is supposed toact this way or not. The waste disposal map is updated at 5am everyday the same time collection starts. Every building produces some trash while not every building produces recycling. Depending in education and as far as I can tell density and wealth to some extent (as far as number of bins per building). The recycling trucks will hit the city with at least some kind of priority until 11am. Again I have no back ups and at least every building gets collected at some point in a 2-3 day cycle. This is where it gets kinda screwy, those same buildings also produce trash and I only have five garbage trucks to cover 175,000, but the garbage is taken from every building everyday. Although the stats say I'm barely pickin any up at all. The recycling plant seems to only take in an amount that it is able to process in a single shift.

To the previous post I would pull the waste disposal map up and wait for it to update again and just make sure that you actually have recyclables and if so. I'm not sure what to say except this game is frustrating at times lol

It seems sending collection trucks to another city only works if that city has its own Recycling Facility...?
