NAM Interchange Difficulties

I've scanned - yes I'll admit did not read every bit - of the guides and docs and believe everything is installed properly. Even removed everything in the plugins folder and reinstalled. Anyway, I'm trying to graduate from the grid layout and thought for my first attempt to use the roundabout. That failed miserably as I couldn't get anything to line up.

Next attempt was to ensure I was using mods from the same pack and create a simple interchange. Not that it would be pretty or anything just a bit more functional than 4-way stop lights. That failed miserably as well. I've tried starting with the central road and adding the curves but then the interchanges don't line up. I tried with an overpass and that was even more of a disaster.

Again, primary mod installed is NAM and using just the curves, road and interchanges from the Build Highways and Ramps mode.

I'm guessing that I'm just not using the right pieces or they aren't designed to be symetrical. If that's the case, then is there a step-by-step on the roundabout to get 4 one way or two way roads to interconnect, function and look right?

Thanks!!

You are going to need a lot more space.  Those are 45 degree curves, and you'll need two of them to make a full 90 degree turn like you're trying to do.  There are 90 degree curves if you want to use those (you can also drag smaller 90 degree curves).

Odin: Thanks for the post. I had found those but didn't see the roundabout that I have which, since NAM is the only thing I've added, I'm guessing is in there. Anyway, may try that one although not sure about space. I was trying to put this into the middle of my industrial/commercial district.

Joe: I did find the 90 degree curves and they seemed to line up about as well. I could get mostly 2 of the 3 connectors to work but with all 4 90 degree curves relatively in the same place, the other sides didn't line up. What do you mean by dragging out smaller 90 degree curves?

    Thanks!!!

I tried to make the dumbell interchange https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?PHPSESSID=d07baec5b757c0c727908cbf8cc37f05&topic=6843.msg315806#msg315806 but can't even get the road to connect to the roundabout :( I know I'm just using the wrong pieces but what's the trick to find/pick the correct one?

Experimentation in your sandbox or watching tutorial videos is your best bet.  Learn by doing, but not in a live city.  If you don't have a sandbox it is easy to make one.  In the region level of the game, just open a new region and let it all default.  You will get a "default" region which is good for use as an experimental set of cities.

The best learning tool for any computer program is usually just asking it what it does.  With RHW there is such a vast choice you need to have a long read of the documentation, then experiment and see if you can create some of the examples.  What you learn with your hands and mind will stick best.

Hey Moose, thanks and I agree. I'm not worried about using my "live" city as it's just a corner of it. The rest is thriving still and it's all subject to bulldozing at any time :)

Anyway, I'm actually pretty intuitive about this stuff but this is just not making sense. I even tried the simplest thing I could think of, an overpass, and that even fails.

Then I tried just plopping down different interchanges to see what they looked like in the game and see what I could maybe use and found the attached. That doesn't look right so I'm thinking something may be seriously amis. I've removed all my plugins and reinstalled and still the same.

BTW, where are there any tutorial videos? Didn't notice any here or on SC4.

It took me two days of trying to make a diamond using the new project symphony pieces and I even followed the tutorial video step by step.  The MIS ground-to-elevated 15m starterless pieces are bugged to all heck and back, you have to keep deleting them and redoing it over and over again until it finally goes right.  Some weird stuff going with NAM 31.  When making a diamond interchange, you better have at least 120k simoleons or you could be out of money before the project is complete(not really a big amount of money but too expensive for just a diamond interchange especially when it could be done the first time for just under 20k).

I don't want to rush the NAM team though, if we rush them we could be looking at months and months more battling with glitches.  No thanks, those guys can take their time to get it right.  Good luck guys!

    @ShosMeister

Image #1: You can't drag networks through static puzzle pieces like plopable overpasses. You have to draw the crossing network first and then plop the puzzle pieceon top of it.

Image #2: The infamous Sinkhole to China bug. A very nasty bug I still can't get a grip on...

Why do people call it a hole to China?

It's an American thing... (Even though it makes no geographical sense; A hole straight through the centre of the earth that's dug in the US would land somewhere in southern Africa, Madagascar, or the Indian Ocean.)

Also, if there really can be a hole to China, then you’d be arrested if you go through that hole to travel to China.

This dig to China thing is very, very old and it comes from the days of the first oil drillers, I think.  China has always been in folklore as the other side of the world.  If you want to check, find a globe, pick a latitude and longitude in North America, subtract 180 degrees from each remembering that the negative signs convert North to South and West to East and vice versa.  The new spot is where your hole would come out in a spherical projection (not quite correct as the earth is not a sphere).

I think unless I did it incorrectly, if I dug a hole straight through the Earth from where I am in Ohio, I would come out somewhere about 400-700 miles off the coast of Australia.  I hear the weather on that side of the Earth is nice and warm most of the time, I should start digging now if I ever want to make it in my lifetime.  :sly:

You'll get a lot warmer when you approach the core.
