How to get malls to build

I've read in a few places that malls are in SC4, but I've never seen any in my commercial areas. If it's not just a rumor or a mod, how do I get malls in my cities?

Thanks in advance.

I have lots of malls and commerical buildings developed all around them, although everything that I've placed didn't grow, I plopped them there...are you looking to do that, or to have them naturally grow??

If you want them to naturally grow, good luck with that, it may never happen lol  That's why I plop everything that I want in a paticular place. It looks so much better and realistic that way

There are malls available that grow, but only under the right conditions....which, to be honest, isn't too hard to achieve.  I've had a headache with multiple malls growing side-by-side in my commercial areas.  That's why I don't like zoning huge commercial areas.  There are also custom malls that you can download, and they will either grow or you can plop them.  You can also create "lifestyle centers" by downloading custom stores and parking lots, then creating your "drive-thru" shopping district that looks like an open air mall.

from my years with Simcity, if you allow commerical, or basically anything grow naturally, nothing ever looks realistic and is never in the right place either...Plopping has saved my city! :)

I was simply wondering if its even possible for malls to build naturally, or are they not in the game/cut content like the additional City Halls?

You mean American style parking-lot dominated malls, not European pedestrian-oriented ones? No, they are not in the game. You can download and plop them, though.

If you want to have European-style city centers, you can use pedestrian malls and zone commercial areas with the arrows facing those, so that my work. Will still look weird, though, if it's a lot with a parking lot in front growing there.

I'm not sure how you get them but I guess they do develop at a certain commercial stage and wealth level. I saw one in one of my cities earlier today and I don't use any custom lots, it was a true American shopping mall by Maxis.

There are at least two Maxis malls.  You need 6 x 6 CS$$ or CS$$$ lots, and they are usually pretty prompt around stage 5.  I get them fairly easily because if you zone it they will build.

Do you guys talk about this "fashion center" or how it's called? I remember something like that in one of my cities. I think I demolished it, though (hardly any jobs for the space it takes).

I refer to a lot which was labelled as a mall. I don't remember the exact name.

That's it. Earlier attempts didn't work because there wasn't enough demand, but making a mall area next to a large downtown city tile made several malls grow. So far I've seen Andrew's Fashion Centre, The Hsu Mall, Lee Shopping Mall and the Harris Galleria. All grow on 6x6 lots, but the Lee Mall grows on 5x6.

This is going to be a great addition to my cities.

That's the ones.  I generally lay them down in crowded suburbs full of tall residentials.  I don't care if there are only a few jobs.  That is not my playing goal.

Oh yes, that's the one I meant further above.

Mine neither. My explanation was a bit short. The area was somewhat depressed, with most of the residentials partially delapidated, because the jobs in the neighbor cities where the inhabitants had been commuting to were gone. I renewed this city quarter to provide more jobs, which included changing some roads, This means sacrificing some buildings, and something taking up lots of space while providing hardly any jobs finds itself at the top of the list of available building spaces if it's in the way of changed plans.

Ok, that was now the full disclosure :D.

That is so cool. I've never seen the Andrews Fashion Centre. Didn't even know it existed. I have never zoned 6x6 before. I did and got the mall. I love it :D
