SimCity crumbles under online issues

The good, the bad, and the ugly of the latest SimCity. Apparently, there's not a whole lot of "good."

You may call the online news site "The Christian Science Monitor" mainstream or not but it is neither "christian" nor "gaming/tech" focused either (mostly current events, politics, and global events).  More interestingly, the rage noise over this game is so loud that even people who don't even know what SimCity is are reading about it.  Ouch.

Well, dang. This is mildly surprising. --Ocram

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

Other news outlets are focusing their attention on it too, not least BBC News:

Amazon suspends sales of SimCity video game Ongoing problems with the latest
version of SimCity led Amazon to briefly stop selling the game.

The web retailer stopped sales late on 7 March as players reported continued
problems with the city building title.

The latest version of SimCity was launched on 5 March and, like many current
games, demand players stay online as they play.

EA has also taken steps to fix login delays by turning off some features to
lighten the load on game servers.

Prior to this latest release, SimCity was a stand-alone game, but EA has
added the online element to infuse the title with more realism.

Yeah, I saw this yesterday too. It must be REALLY bad for Amazon to even stop selling the digital version. EA has really gone down with this launch and it's earned a pretty bad rep...

The damage is irrepariable at this point as well.  For PC gamers the anticipation of release of SimCity is second only to StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty whereas Blizzard Entertainment got it right with their title Maxis, Electronic Arts, and Origin got it completely wrong.  Sure, Blizzard Entertainment has been at the DRM business much, much, much, much longer than most developers but you would think the folks at Electronic Arts would have hired formor Blizzard Entertainment netork engineers or some other company that has years of experience in this kind of matter.

Blizzard Entertainment's botched job of Diablo 3 was inexcusable because of the amount of technical expertise the company has with online servers.  Maxis' botched job of SimCity is inexcusable because they utterly ignored the warnings from Diablo 3.

This game had great potential, but between technical server issues, mechanical issues within the game, and poor execution in game conceptualization, I think most gamers-to include myself-feel like they are playing on beta rather than a full release and it is frustrating, disheartening, and above all else a monumental disappointment.  Which will all culiminate into poor sales which translates to a downward spiral of the game as a whole.  I can only imagine how developers feel after years of hard work just to see it get destroyed by Electronic Art's and Origin's incompetence.

You're absolutely right here, I do not understand how hard it is to learn from Diablo 3's mistakes. This was one of the WORST (if not the worst) game launches ever. Considering they put so much marketing into pushing this game as the top game of the year, they should have taken into consideration the large influx of people going in. And you are right, it feels much like playing a Beta than a commercially launched game.

SimCity's release, I will argue, is worse than the Diablo 3 fiasco, at least Diablo 3 played exceedingly well when you got past the server issues.

With SimCity being this much of abysmal failure, StarCraf II: Heart of the Swarm is a shoe-in for game of the year now assuming the folks at Blizzard Entertainment haven't recieved a lobotomy.

Oh yeah, that's what i meant, it might've not sounded clear haha. But I meant to say that this (SimCity) was one of the worst if not the worst game launches ever.

Other game companies (I work in this industry) are sending emails to staff telling them how not to follow EA's example in game launching...

Good, I'm glad this is happening. EA should be ashamed of themselves. And the bad part is... they probably won't learn from this failure.

Rotflol! This is so what they get for subjecting the players to a game that is inferior to begin with, and then trying to curtail the SC4 experience.  Let this be a lesson, EA.  Online-only is a mistake, because most who have had any appreciable experience online have dealt with server crashes.  EA's got the media against it now, which is never a good sign.

It must be extremely bad that even mainstream non-gaming publications are making note of SimCity's disaster.

EA, the world is seeing your stubbornness to follow the money, not address concerns your customers have, of which there is a very long list and are urgent.

Didn' they have 3 betas to stress test the servers? Did their employees all play the betas instead of collecting data? Maybe they should shut it down  then rerelease it.
