Nice pics Timmie. I'm jealous of Easy Bakes' humming bird. I've always wanted to see a hummingbird but never have with my own eyes. Good shot.

Keeping it alive.

I really love these 2 pics, MR. Just my personal favorites from what you've shown.

These are a few more and stuff.

I don't consider myself that great of a photographer yet. This is just a hobby I'm slowly getting better at, as well as enjoying more. :)

Really depends on whether the depiction is art or just record.

Thanks for the comments MilitantRadical!  I liked your set of photos just below my last post quite a bit, especially the first one.

In regards to naming photos: I never get too 'clever' with mine. Sometimes I'm listening to a song at the time I made it and name it that.  Most of the time I name it after whatever the subject is, or just leave it as 'untitled'.  I like to let photos speak for themselves.

Here's a few more of mine:

Ocala Union Station in Ocala, FL

    Tampa by Night.

    tampa_by_night_by_somewhere1belong-d6454

SunTrust Tower, Downtown Tampa FL.  I feel like the colors really worked here, and the way they lit the top pyramid green and gold for University of South Florida's graduation really aids the palette as well.

Thanks _marsh_. Nice photos. I really like the mountain landscape in the last pic. It is very moody.

Sweet night shots _Jazz. I always love shooting at night. Still, your black and white pic with the focus on symmetry stands out the most.

Black and white is a more artistic medium.  Karsh's B&W studies are far better than his colour ones because they have more impact.

I personally wouldn't say it is more artistic, it just lets your eye focus in on certain elements of the composition more. Color can be distracting. I find black and white adds an element of nostalgia. Light and shadow also play a bit of a bigger role in black an white. I'd call it more classic, rather than more artistic. Hard for me to classify one thing as more artistic than the other, in the end it is just in the eye of the beholder.

True, but in the good (bad?) old days, when I was in high-school I worked exclusively in black and white because colour work was too expensive.  Did my own processing too.  Eventually took part in the PSA Salon-Circuits.  Even got some notice in a show in Mexico city.  Alas my prints were "lost in the mail".  I no longer sing the Photographer's Lament.

Some Day My Prints Will Come.

Two best days in the life of an amateur photographer: the day you buy your enlarger; the day you sell your darkroom complete.  Been there, done that.

Black and white is a more artistic medium.  Karsh's B&W studies are far better than his colour ones because they have more impact.

It could just be because Karsh was able to really "own" black and white photographs.  It probably had less to do with whether or not black and white film was inherently more artistc, and more to do with how he was able to bring out the full capabilities of the medium.  I've shot black and white and I know that it's entirely a different monster - you have to look for high contrast areas, which often lend themselves to abstraction.  As MillitantRadical pointed out, some shots wouldn't look as good in color because the color palette of the scene doesn't work.  There's two different applications for  both.  I don't see Henrier-Cartier Bresson in color, just like I don't see Alec Soth in black and white.

What I do wonder, though, is whether or not black and white photography would have ever been invented if color photography was possible right at photography's inception in 1839 1829.

    @timmie, that's great. :P

Interesting question.  Chemistry was in its infancy in 1839, and the photoelectric effect wasn't available until 1906.  In the 1950s when I was in high-school chemistry the Bohr model of the atom was still accepted in general.  Chemistry was emerging from being called Alchemy.  The new standard nomenclature was much later, so it was all very romantic with substances named in a systematic but artibrary way:  Iodic Acid, then add an Oxygen and you got Periodic Acid (pronounced Purr-I-O-dick).

Now they go all hog wild with numbers.  I can really understand why students these days have an awful time with Chemistry.

Of course organic chemistry was also mostly mysterious to even some chemists.  Using some the chemicals necessary to develop images was almost an exercise in Alchemy.  Fortunately, the manufacturers and the publisher of the Chemical Rubber Company's Handbook of Chemistry had expertise across the board.  I used the formulas in the back of this little tome to compound my best developers.  I think that in later editions, the formulary has been removed.  It was in my 1957 edition.

Sad to hear about that, sucks.

Haha, I sure hope people these days can still recognize ET. I'm pretty sure they can lol.

What I do wonder, though, is whether or not black and white photography would have ever been invented if color photography was possible right at photography's inception in 1839 1829.

I think that B&W would have been used by photographers even if color was available at the inception of photography. 'Black and White' or monochrome has been used in art since the dawn of drawing, pictorial representations, art, or whatever you want to call it. Kind of a chicken and egg scenario. Before people learned how to mix colors and make the first color paints there were cave drawings made without color. Sounds pretentious: an artist should always be able to see without color, or look without color (and I'm not talking about race here). Thank god for modern technology which has allowed us to go straight from the camera into the digital photolab!

Here are a few shots I took with my first camera. The Canon Powershot A520.

    canon-powershot-a520-4mp-digital-camera-

Not a great quality camera compared to digital or analog SLRs, but hey, it served its purpose and was a good stepping stone.

I've decided not to give names or captions to my pictures. I don't want to impose what I think my picture is about or of to the viewer, it should be up to them to form their own meaning, or lack thereof.

I'm certainly no photographer, as the quality of these images will show, but I like to take pictures of things when I feel they are picture-worthy. Here are my favorites. Prepare yourselves for picture spam.

I found a beautiful moth in a flower pot in Sedona, AZ and let it crawl on my hand:

    mothr.jpg

A beach somewhere in Southern California:

A view of one of my favorite places, downtown San Diego, from Coronado Island:

    dscn3618r.jpg

A view of the Japanese Garden in Phoenix - the closest thing we have to paradise:

    zengarden2.jpg

Koi fish and ducks om nom nomming at the same place:

    omnomnomi.jpg

Sometimes I take pictures of flowers:

    img0018cc.jpg

And last but not least, a portrait I did of Paul McCartney:

some great pics in the thread!

I have a few that I am somewhat proud of; many were lost when my hard drive suddenly gave up the ghost last year. Yeah, I know... backup backup. Almost all of these are also in Google Earth.

Heidecke Lake pan as a severe storm rolled in. Within 2 mins of this pic, we were hit with 60mph winds and large hail. The lake is an old power plant cooling lake that is split down the middle by the train tracks that supplied the coal.

The lighthouse on Government Pier in Waukegan, IL:

    govtpierlighthouse.jpg

this metal mariachi band is visible only from the water on the Fox River in IL. Not a great pic but great subject matter

    metalmariachiband.jpg

Rush Lake in Glen Ellyn, IL at sunrise. If you look hard, you can see my bobber.

    rushlake3.jpg

another Rush Lake at sunrise, a much hotter and hazier morning

    rushlake2.jpg

and one of very few B/W I have ever done

Well, that's too bad in a way.  No exciting burning in and fading out.  But you can do that with the GIMP anyway, and you don't get your fingers all stained with Silver Nitrate into the bargain.
