Im thinking of getting this game from the website. My only problem is i heard it has a memory leak ? Is this true or is it fixed ?  I really wan't it as long as there are a large number of "mods floating around the internet..... .If there is hardly any mods and no one is going to make heaps of "mods like Sc4 does (Still going strong after 10 years btw) ,i wont bother getting the game.

1. Cities XL 2011 (and subsequent DLCs) is a fun game, if your computer can handle it.

2. There is a large community of Cities XL players and modders at XLNation.Net

3. There are more mods in Cities XL now than there were 3 years after the release of SimCity 4.

For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

I think it's worth getting.  I don't have any memory leaks.  It's not the best "simulation" compared to simcity, but it sure is pretty.  Everything looks pretty realistic, enough mods to keep me happy, huge maps, etc...I don't understand why so many people complain about this game.  IMHO, it's 10x better than Simcity 2013.

I've only been playing for a few days and haven't built a big enough city to know if the memory leak thing is really an issue but I do run Memory Booster which should cure any memory leaks in any case.

The best place for mods is xlnation.net

As to whether you should buy it or not, that depends on what you want from the game. If you want something like a more modern looking SC4 with huge maps and freedom to create the city you want then I would say yes, that's what I wanted and I'm very pleased with it so far. It's not expensive, I paid £15 on Amazon, so it won't hurt too much if you try it and don't like it.

I can only recomend that you buy this game.

I only have memory issues if i use the Window-Button to get out of the game and then go back in. After a few times the game will be very slow. It can be fixed by going out of the game and then back ind. Its a fix that takes seconds.

    I use Steam btw.

I would get it in the steam sales if ever possible, I bought CXL 2012 for £7.99 not to long ago, not long after they released platinum and because I already had 2012 I could buy platinum for only £3.00 :-). All in all I got a very good game for very little. I do have problems with memory leak as your city grows and the longer you play the worse it gets, just restart it if it slows up.

Whilst playing Simcity 2013 I can't help but feel the need for large maps Cities XL offers you these in abundance but at the sacrifice of as indepth simulation as simcity.

Steam is awsome for sales so if they don't have it in sale now they probably will again at some point! also recently got tropico 3 for £7.99 :-).

If Cities XL: Platinum is being sold in stores for at least $15, then it is most likely the full version with the contents of the base game (CXL:2011) plus the subsequent DLCs (2012 and Platinum).

I said $15 dollars because the regular price is $30-40 and steam can have sales of up to 75% off. No one would charge more than $15 for the DLC alone.

I have been so tempted to go back on cities XL lol... For the first time last night I was hit with the dreaded server problems on simcity... had no probs until then, I signed onto the asia server in the end and started again... so far not single problem on the asian one no time outs or anything is running very smooth.

Cities XL is a good game even with it's defects.

I'm not sure if Platinum is worth the 50 buildings, well what they are asking -- some 5€ isn't much, although many of the buildings are reskinned and made from forming few buildings into one :D

But obviously something has changed at Focus side, they have already released 2 patches for platinum! Now that's something, considering cxl2011 only got 1 patch and cxl12 did not got any. OK Platinum also includes community patch which is great! So the best thing here would be that obviously they /Focus) have hired a coder for CXL. I have already been in touch with the said coder.

I've noticed there are many new CXL-modding teams forming around the globe, which is great. Sim City 5 at this point does not seem to be a major rival for CXL. I think that those who liked SC3 and SC4 will find CXL much appealing than SC5 at this stage. But things might not be solid, as Maxis/EA is milking the machine and will release further feature updates and expansions for SC5 -- they are still thinking of computing power - and want that the basic version also runs on dad's comp.

Despite Simcity's disasterous launch it has proved that there is mainstream demand in a market that has been thought virtually dead in the PC market, I'm guessing focus realise they have an opportunity to capitalise here... Bad press immerging about major flaws in Simcitys glassbox engine, server issues and loss of players cities, and dissapointment in lack of features and small city size have frustrated players... but it has caused people to seek out alternatives. For example if you look at IGN Cities XL has a higher review score and is recommended to buy instead of the new simcity.

If focus are smart they have an advantage already cities XL offers massive maps with an impressive graphical engine, I found myself wanting to play Cities XL over Simcity myself. If they have the intent to tweak or give more depth to the games simulation engine its possible for this game to become vastly popular on the back of simcitys faliures.  However I'm sure EA/maxis has more in store for the current simcity, it will be interesting if a battle between these two titles develops, platinum was released on the eve of Simcitys launch hype (possibly stealing customers) so maybee its already began!

Yeah, I put SimCity on the back burner and am redownloading CitiesXL from Steam.  The new SimCity made me realize how much I don't really care for city management and just want to design amazing looking cities.

And to the OP, the modding community for Cities XL is really picking up steam, they have some impressive patches, UI mods, and building additions that can be added to the game.

Are the mods for this game easier to use than the mods for SC4?

The chains of dependencies and the endless menus make using mods in SC4 a real pain imo.

Yes, heck yes! Mods made for CXL as of yet have virtually no dependencies, the only main one being the UIM (User Interface Mod) and once you download that you're pretty much set.

As for menus, the UIM adds and enhances the in-game interface, therefore getting rid of any potential problems with having to scroll through endless menus such as in SC4.

And yes, those problems with dependencies is one of the reasons I moved away from SC4, being a longtime fan of that franchise.

    Also:

    No.  Don't buy it.

    What a well-supported opinion!

    Care to elaborate?

Platinum is compatible with 2012 mods.

And answer to jasperb, yes, mods are a lot, I mean alot, easier to use than in SC. No dependencies expect UIM - which is not only a GUI mod but does other things too. There are no tons puzzle pieces, but mods use very much the game technics, as when for example laying traffic paths. OK in RHW2 there is puzzle peices but thats the only one, I dont' use it because I find the in-game higway good, and I use it with hyperwolf_allowhighwayintersections mod. There's also some philosophy behind this: cars, motorways and huge concrete junctions do not define cities, but humans, buildins, and such as trams and trains. Well I'm from Europe.

Hoing from SC4 to CXL might early feel like "hmm", but you'll get the hang of it soon, it is it's own kind of game and should not (only) compared to SC4.
