Little story of Aldebaran...

In January 2047 the Galileo Galilei probe discovered the first planet in the universe to have the same atmosphere than the Earth. It was Aldebaran-4, in the solar system of Aldebaran, in the Taurus constellation, 64 light-years from the Earth. Such a long trip had been allowed by the discovery a few years before of a new process which enabled speeds over the speed of light.

In September 2055, the very first ship was sent to Aldebaran-4, named in a shorter way Aldebaran by the scientists. The later got the proof that the atmosphere, the climate, the flora and the fauna of Aldebaran was totally human-friendly. 6 years after, in year 2061, the United Nations voted the construction of a space ship that could carry settlers to Aldebaran.

In June 2078, after a long selection of the candidates, the Space Ship Johannes Kepler took off with 1,500 settlers on its board. They landed on February 11th 2079 on a place called Base One. It was the first human settlement outside the Sun solar system.

After a few years, Base One was renamed as Oppie - the name of the first president of Aldebaran's colony.

Unfortunately, in 2084, the second space ship to Aldebaran got lost in space for unknown reasons and a few month after, the communication satellite which made contact between the Earth and Aldebaran failed.

Due to the unbelievable human losses (2,500 deads) of the Tycho Brahe ship disaster, the UNO decided to put an end to long space flights until a more safe technology is found.

In year 2180, the contact between Aldebaran and the Earth had never been brought back.

(this story is freely inspired by the events described in the famous French comic book : words of Aldebaran)

The Eastern shore of Oppie Island :

The Southern coast of Oppie Island :
/idealbb/files/utopia24.jpg

Why the towers ?  At the origin the only threat to humans were strange birds with a long sword-like nozzle which used to attack men and women of Oppie. These dangerous birds are called the javelins. The towers enabled the citizens to keep an eye on the sky...

The western part of the isle (also known as Base One) :
/idealbb/files/utopia34.jpg

Close to the white sandy beach, you can see President Oppie's official house. He also had a villa on an small island.

Though it is the most crowded shore, the Northern part of the island is also very rural with limes, apple trees and a  vineyard which produces a very expensive red wine :
/idealbb/files/utopia44.jpg

/idealbb/files/utopia52.jpg

The center part of the island is occupied by a roaming volcano : the Alkaola.
This place was abandonned by the settlers due to the frequent lava flows and explosions. Sometimes, toxic gazes roll down the mountain and invade the streets of Oppie's northern district, spreading death and diseases...
/idealbb/files/utopia72.jpg

This is a global view of Oppie Island :
/idealbb/files/utopia63.jpg

After a few decades, Oppie Island got so overcrowded that most people were obliged to leave it. They build a large boat in order to explore the planet and find more peaceful places...

They were wrong...

Nice start, very idyllic setting and interesting story. Is that a pedestrian bridge over the water between the two towers? Does it work? (ie. do sims walk across it) Can I get it from anywhere?

The ship first sailed to the very near and already colonized Frogface Island. This island was famous for an endemic specy of batracians, which the body of a lizard and the head of a frog. The scientists shortly called it the Frogface. These animals have never been agressive to humans so far. A small village of fishermen and nature-lovers hangs up on the cliff.
    /idealbb/files/utopia8.jpg

The most common way of transport on Aldebaran, due to the lack of petrol, is the sail.
The skipper of this one was probably not used to meet so large ships on the endless sea. He avoided the Magellan with luck.
    /idealbb/files/utopia9.jpg

This island, known as Smurfer-2 Rock, is really hostile. No fauna (only a few birds), almost no flora. That is the place where President Oppie spent his retirement. After 20 years of faithful devotion for the good of the community.

Eventually, the Magellan found a new land in the North of Oppie Island. The landscape looked the same than Oppie, but there was more room for a settlement. And the Island was seemingly much bigger than Oppie. The island was a bit mountainous and covered with large forests. The settlers were expecting to find some precious oil or coal under those hills.

    /idealbb/files/aldebaran1.jpg

The only bad surprise was the presence of numerous javelins. It took a few days to secure the area and start the building ex-nihilo of a new city : Xiziz-Haven.
    /idealbb/files/aldebaran4.jpg

One of the first buildings was of course the ferry dock, in order to sea-link the new Xiziz to the old Oppie. A windmill gives the necessary power to such a small village.

The settlers of Xiziz had the luck (or the bad-luck it depends on if you consider economic developpment or environment preservation) to find an oil reserve.

    /idealbb/files/aldebaran6.jpg

Thanks to the presence of oil in its underground, Xiziz developped rapidly and buildings grew like mushrooms. Cars, which were almost absent on Oppie Island, invaded the streets of Xizie and soon, a surrounding highway was necessary. Traffic jams occured every day during rush hours.

    /idealbb/files/aldebaran5.jpg

Because all the money of the city is devoted to roads building, schools and hospitals lack funds, classes are overcrowded, elder people have to queue before meeting a doctor, police and fire department can not front fires and riots anymore. The situation in Xiziz is becoming HOT !  As it was on the Earth a few centuries before...

FOCUS ON A CUSTOM LOT :
    The pedestrian wooden bridge

    /idealbb/files/focus11.jpg

It's been made by a Japanese SC4 player. I guess that his name is Hidemasa but nothing is less sure since I don't speak Japanese. But you'll probably agree that this batter should deserve fame and glory for his great contribution to the game...

The city of Xiziz rapidly became saturated of inhabitants and cars because of the small place it had between the mountain and the sea. Therefore, many small villages grew along the coast where the citizens could enjoy more quiet conditions of living.

    /idealbb/files/aldebaran7.jpg

    /idealbb/files/aldebaran8.jpg

Unsatisfied, the utopist inhabitants of Xiziz left once more this place, looking for a better place. After a few weeks of sailing they found one peaceful with wide open spaces. They gave it the name of Somy, who was a famous asian architect on Aldebaran.

You are surely a good terraformer but what about the pictures you have posted in the best city contest ?  When will you show it in your thread ? The terraforming on it is simply unbelievable !

Wow, I've been waiting for a city journal like this! Great work!

BTW, I have a couple of questions:

    1. Where did you get that green ship that appears in the first few pictures?
    2. How did you get so many cars to appear? (i know it's mod, but I forget the name)

I'm liking this. Looking forward to more of the story.

But you didn't need to edit that picture like that. The horizon desn't look good since SC4 doesn't have the proper camera perspective for that. To me, It looks like the picture was snipped off and a sky background added. But maybe my eyes just don't get the illusion......

    Great CJ, though.

EDIT: Looking at the pic again, I realize the problem. The illusion could be generated, but all the trees are ruining it. if there were no trees in that pic, the illusion would work much better, since the terrain texture is more flexible than 3d objects that act as landmarks (the trees). But you probably don't want to demolish all the trees....

If you always take the same road, you will never see anything new.
If you can read this, you deserve a cookie.
