How to duplicate a region

I have a region I need to duplicate. It's entirely hand-terraformed, so there is no greyscale to work with. I'd like to duplicate it with every current city and modification entirely intact, and I can't seem to figure out how to do it.

Any pointers?

Create a new folder with the name of the new region.

Open the old region with windows explorer.

Press CTRL+a to select all files.

Press CTRL+c to copy them

Open the new region folder

Click anywhere in the empty panel.

Press CTRL+v to paste the files.  This may take a long time.

Open the file called region.ini in Notepad.

Change the region name to the name of the new folder.

Save it.

All done.

And since you are on a MAC, no doubt, use whatever file system stuff you have.  They all work the same.

Yes, I didn't try a simple copy/paste, because I wasn't sure what the game would do with two identical regions. The notepad part is the clincher there, I think.

I run the Windows version on a partition of my Mac, so it's all good there.  :)

Ian, I copy regions all the time, but usually without the cities for a new render to get a new region.

My prime concern was that having two regions with the same name might throw SC4 into a fit. Didn't want to risk it.  :P

    Thanks for the info.  :)

A slight change of name is all that's needed.  E.g. Blefesque -> blefesque.1

Actually, if you don't change the ini file, the worst that happens is that you have two regions with the same name in your ingame region list. That's of course mightily inconvenient, but the game doesn't complain*.

*Take a guess how I know...

Aha!  Someone else who isn't afraid to ask the program what it would do.  Congratulations.

While I do agree that there is valor in experimentation, the ease of asking was too tempting. Even the slight risk of the game flipping out and causing me several hours of time for a re-install was just too great.

Surely you've been around computers long enough to know that you can't clobber the game from the user area unless you are running in administration mode?

I don't know about OS/X, but that takes deliberate intention on Linux.  I have an admin account, but all that does is enable the su and sudo commands, which have to prefix every administration session.

Gave up running SC4 in OSX years ago. I have the Windows versions. And yes, I have in fact irretrievably crashed SC4 on both Mac and Windows. To be fair, each time was probably a series of conflicts that resulted in a cascade, but I don't risk it anymore. I treat that game as if it were made of my grandmother's crystal.

No question that TLC is the answer.  On my next machine, I might just let the OEM deliver it with Windows just to have it.  I'll still run production on Linux, even if I have to load it on a separate disk.  Maybe I am getting tired of fighting with wine.
