Trying to get an idea of SimCity's compatibility with Wine on Ubuntu just to decide between SimCity 2013 and CXLP....

Any comments  appreciated --- I don't really want to spend however much on something that I can't even use as a coaster!

Cheers

-- For info: Am running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64bit.

I checked the wine app db and Origin is flagged as bronze/garbage.

Hang on, pardon my ignorance, is Origin the Steam-like Distro channel for EA Games? Is it possible to download via other means? Or is it Origin vs Physical?

The main problem with wine to have games / apps working on it, is that you can't install DX10 or 11 on it. Simcity seems to be builded around dx9, so you should be able to do something with it... (I have not tried it yet)
btw you will still require to run it thru origin to be able to play it, otherwise, you'll become famous for finding a way to play that game offline, since almost everyone requests for that since the day they said "online only" (yeah yeah, Mr Maxis and Mr EA... we know... "We listen and care about the community... You said it many times, but never proved it despite you had several occasions to do it) :P

Anyway running origin under wine should not be a huge problem... You may have to enable direct writing to prevent graphical glitches just like you have when running Steam Windows thru wine.

If you have issues, please describe them, I'm curious about this one...

Edit: Not crashing as often now, maybe 1 in 4 times. Am able to go through Origin. I had a Infinite restart loop issue when SimCity tried to update, but that seems to be unrelated to wine and was fixed with instructions from http://answers.ea.com/t5/Updater/Infinity-loop-restarting-Simcity/m-p/889080#M2745

    Old Post -

Currently I have 1 major problem, and that is that it is unstable. i.e I need to start it with SimCity.exe directly, and even then, 4 times out of 5 it crashes before loading the city. Once it loads the City it is typically fine after that. This is mentioned in the AppDB page as well
