You probably deserve a MOTM as much as I do, if not more(or at the very least your own Captain's bars). Heck, I might've already voted for you...

EDIT: Second page. This is some heavy stuff.

That's nice.  What does the title have to do with this music?  Doesn't seem like a disaster to me, in spite of the clocks ticking.  I am compiling this in my music player as a separate playlist, and will be able to burn it if anyone wants a copy.  Any problem with that?

    I don't really know actually!

That is the title I got from the original MIDI, so I can only guess it's related to the moment the song was played in the game...

I believe that this was the song that played whenever a disaster was triggered in the game (at least in the Windows 95 Special Edition). Fittingly enough, sometimes decisions must be made during disasters. Really looking forward to that 688(I) remix, too. I would suggest editing the opening post with the links to all of the tracks you've done, for both SimCity and 688(I).

    Right! That's what I thought.

That sounds like a great idea: I'll do that.

About the remixes, check out your "Comprehensive" thread. Here, now, I have something special!!! :D :D :D

    Ok, everyone!

Now, as many of you might already know, Biff landed the idea of remixing the 688i HK game's OST on me and that... spun me up!

I've just completed a major piece of music (don't worry: I DO have a life! I took advantage of being forced to stay home sick :) ), starting from a 25 seconds musical phrase from said OST. I extended it, added some powerful brass, added a «vivace con calma» bridge, some powerful sub-sound drums... you know the deal!

Here's to you: At Sea, an original composition by Tony Leva (that's my real name!), from a piece called Indylong, from 688i Hunter Killer videogame's soundtrack.

Please, let me know what y'all think! :)

Very nice, Tony.  Did you ever study with Erich Korngold?  There are evocative phrases in that piece that remind me of some of his work.

No, man: I'm too young for that! Even though I would have loved to! :)

Actually, I come from a rather unusual musical background: I studied Organ and Composition, after years of self-taught studying. So I'm most of a sacred music composer (believe it or not!). During the last years I'm expanding my musical views (in composition, I mean. On the other hand, I am always been a very broad listener ;) )

Well, too bad you missed him.  If you haven't, you might want to give an ear to the overture from GWTW.  You'll find some familiar phrases.  I have a nephew who studied organ, won the state prize in Oregon, the just quit.  Now a manager for a chain store.

I studied composition for a while with an Opera type, but I got too busy to continue.  Never got farther than Bach.

If you are interested in 20th century stuff, have a look at Korngold, Stravinsky and Lenny Bernstein as well as the guys from Tin Pan Ally.  You might be surprised by some of them: Jerome Kern and George Gershwin in particular.

    Anyway: new mix!!!!

^ Impressive.  I like steel drums.  Shades of Jamaica, it is very nice.  Do you do any longer pieces, Tony?

While noodling around a bit, I find I run out of steam after about 20 bars (around a minute or so.)  I just make some neat ring tones for my auto alarm system.  My ability with harmony is pretty limited, but i get 'er done anyway.

Sure I do (I've got plenty of stuff... all to be recorded... sooner or later... I hope! :D ).

The problem with harmony is that for certain kinds of compositions it just is not enough; if you really want to expand your piece, then you're gonna need counterpoint! (of course you can write a twelve-munite long blues song with only three chords, but that's not our point in this case :) ). So I suggest, you follow a few video-courses on YouTube (there are some on counterpoint which are pretty fast and simple) or, better yet, get a manual. I don't now there in Canada, but here in Italy, one of the classics was the Dubois on Counterpoint. Sorry, I didn't mean to get "teachery"... I hope that didn't bother you! ;)

If you have some of your writings you can send them to me (maybe via PM)... who knows: a remix could pop-up!!! :D

PS: What do you mean "for you auto"?!? Do you have a customizable car alarm system? That's cool!! :D

No, I don't drive.  I mean for my computerized alarm clock.  I am on Linux, and one of the utilities allows you to set alarms and have custom music for the alarm.

I don't think I'll publish any of my hen scratchings.  They are for my amusement.  Somewhere in my library I have a tome on counterpoint, and I do get the message.  One of the big problems I have is that I don't currently have an instrument of any kind, not even a midi keyboard.  Makes composition pretty cerebral.

So you are in Italia.  This is the home of a lot of great music starting with Claudio Monteverdi.  I got thoroughly stuck on music drama when  I was in college as it seemed like a good course to round out my math stuff.  You really don't want to know how long ago that was.  The title of the course was "Keyboard Literature and Music Drama from 1600 to the Present".  A survey course, but it had some pretty stringent spotting tests.  One of the dirty tricks in those was to use an excerpt in a different language from the original.  Ever heard any Verdi in Russian?

I downloaded the newest one (Virtual Village), will listen to it soon and will post my thoughts on the others: (yes, I've actually listened to them)

Disaster Decision: The sound effects and tempo in general are really great. It's not quite full-on action as might be expected of disaster music, but I don't think it needs to be.

Downtown Dance: Pretty darned good. Reminds me of the music from Transport Tycoon and maybe a little bit from an esoteric racing game for the Xbox called Sega GT 2002; it's jazzy and daresay funky in general. I'd be happy to build cities to this at any rate. It does the main theme, so to speak, justice.

Subway Song: Quite metropolitan; then again it IS the Subway Song. Also, the sound effects are good.

City Shimmy: I don't recall hearing this one too often in the game (not the long version anyway), and it's giving me a vibe not unlike the music from the Super Nintendo SimCity (which has been covered by a number of orchestras already FYI), and just a hint of Tropico in the trumpets. Overall a good, laid-back, thoughtful and slightly melancholy song (I believe this is the song that plays whenever you open a newspaper or budget report to bad news).

You going to do the four SC2K songs that aren't in the PS1 version(that aren't shorter versions of longer songs anyway)? Or for that matter, the Classic song? I'd really like that if you could. I have the MIDI for the latter if you need it.

And as for At Sea: I'd say you've earned your...well, whatever they give Navy musicians. Way to turn a short piece into something bigger. Nonny Moose was right; this would fit right into a movie, almost like Hunt for Red October. It's not all exactly fit for intense submarine combat either, but I trust there are other songs that are.

Overall verdict? You are good at this. Please keep doing it.

EDIT: Listened to Virtual Village. It is indeed quite tropical. It would fit in Tropico(the original game, anyway). Quite befitting for a municipal celebration (whenever you plop your second park, anyhow). Also, I got the three new 688(I) remixes; they are awesome!

I am now a SimCity2000/SimCity 4 music fanatic, I cannot play my game without yours Bill, and yours Tony, music files.  I got them all lined up in my media player and a soundtrack of their own along with the SimMars soundtrack, set to be random and repeat.  I don't play without them.  I hope you all keep this up.  Thanks a ton for adding a new dimension tot he game I had previously overlooked.

Thanks cromabianca for doing this.  The songs are just fantastic.

Does anybody know if this was done for the SC3K Unlimited songs (or at least converted them to mp3)?

Great Work! Disaster Decision is definitely my favorite out of the bunch. Your remixes of the SimCity 2000 music almost sounds like it belongs in either the jazzy SC3K soundtrack or the SimCity 4 playlist!

Subway Song reminds me of 80s synth-pop

Virtual Village is nice and tropical

Downtown Dance sounds almost the same as the original, with a disco flair

City Shimmy is something that should play every morning when the sun rises

    Disaster Decision is very jazzy

Congrats on some great remixes! Good luck with any new project!

    Anyways...

    NEW SONG!!!

Now don't stone me for what I'm about to post... music is about fun after all, isn't it? :)

There was this 30 second cue in the Game's ST (the Celtic Harp solo you'll hear at very beginning of the song) I didn't exactly know what to do with, so... I turned into a celtic ballad!!! :D

But we still need your support to stay online. If you're able to, please consider a donation to help us stay up and running. This helps sustain a platform where we can share our community creations for years to come.

    STEX Collections

By way of a "Thank You" gift, we'd like to send you our STEX Collector's DVD. It's some of the best buildings, lots, maps and mods collected for you over the years. Check out the STEX Collections for more info.

Each donation helps keep Simtropolis online, open and free!
