extra cheats dll help

i have installed the extra cheats dll into the my documents/simcity4/plugins folder as instructed.  before, i had no problem running SC4, but after the dll, the game's startup returns to the desktop (SC4 will not play).  i am running on a Windows 98 system and meet all the system requirements to play SC4.  i have a SC4 distributed by Cosmi, does this make any difference?  i can fix the problem by removing the dll and reinstalling SC4, but i'd rather use the dll.  is there a money cheat that actually works besides "weakness pays".  it's extremely aggravating spending half my time playing 'shift+up+entering' to keep my city going.  any assistance is greatly appreciated.  otherwise, the game is going to the thrift store.

The first thing I'd suggest is downloading one of the many money tree lots and using that. 

 

The second thing I'd suggest is to be more frugal with your cities.

Are you using the fully updated Rush Hour / Deluxe version of the game? The Extra Cheats DLL isn't compatible with the standard 'vanilla' version of SimCity 4. Also, the file will need to be placed in the root directory of your plugins folder -- not inside a subfolder.

 

Personally, I would be very careful about using money trees. They often create more problems than they solve. If you do choose to use one, make sure its only used for cash boosts.

If the game's treasury reaches above a certain figure (I think it's $1 trillion), it will cause a crash to desktop. It should therefore be removed when you have a sufficient amount of cash.

I made it a habit to always plop three "Simoleon trees" on the other side of the road to my power plant. 

That way I can easily find them again (through the power grid) and add/remove a couple, anytime.

Three is usually more than enough and should land you a few million in a couple of (real-time playing) hours. 

IMO it is the simplest, the best, and the most reasonable money-cheat of the lot. 

And it never gave me any crash to desktop (CTD), sudden meltdown, abandonment or disaster like some of the others do... and I've tried quite a few - believe you me!

Dunno if you have Rush Hour or not, but try it anyway. It's been my faithful tree for years!

Not to be a nitpicky smart-alec, but you do realize this is Simtropolis, don't you?  The fact that the OP is able to post in these forums means he's already registered here and able to download content from the STEX.

from seeing newbies asking where the download button is in the LEX...

My bad though.

I don't believe you have to reinstall the program completely (as you suggest doing).

Just delete the cheats dll and you should be honky dory and ready to play again.

You are missing both updates.  You need to go and add them to your game.  As it stands it is more than a little buggy. 

 

Go to SC4Devotion and register (free) then open the site, scroll down to the EA Support button (left side) and click it.  Accept the agreement.  Pick up the proper EP1 for your area (not sure what 213 is) and download it to your desktop, then go to the BAT page and get the update to 1,1,640 and download that as well.  Both of these are zip archives.

 

Unpack the EP1 update and install it.  Then unpack the bat update and install it.

Write both of the zipped archives to a backup so you can get them if you ever reinstall.

 

Your dll should work now.

Don't bother with anything else. There is one mod that "works just your monorail", is easy to install and use, and you can turn it on and off whenever you need to. If you like the cityplopplaycheating, this is a must. That's the only thing I use which does not crash the game or interefere with anything else.
