I just seen this too. I'm wondering if it requires an internet connection to play?

Yes it do, it all does. trust me, they don't remove the online requirement for a little part of the game at this moment of development.

I do wonder though, I can't remember reading/seeing/others anywhere that it will be possible to play in more than one region. Have a solo, one with friends, one with strangers and so on, at the same time. Allthough I can't find a reason why this shouldn't be an option, I just can't remember any confirmation. Someone know anything about this?

Mike

That's no news, of last week has a link to an interview, where you can also see the gameplay process and a screen with the sandbox mode and its explanation (half of the video is in Dutch, but all the inscriptions on the computer screen are in English).

They said each player can have 10 regions at a time of up to 16 cities per region.

Nice, I can't remember that. But that's good news. Thanks..

Since it has a Sandbox mode it must also be like Cities XL, I'm presuming?

Cities XL at least never claimed to be or wanted to be a legitimate incarnation of SimCity.

You're right. It claimed to be the SimCity killer, and failed utterly at that.

The sandbox mode is just a single player mode (even though you have to be connected to the Internet) with everything unlocked such as all the city specializations, buildings, modules, transit options, etc. and cheats enabled. The problems present in the rest of the game such as lack of terraforming, small cities, dead space between cities, lack of moddable features, etc. are still present in this mode as well. It's not that different from the multiplayer mode really except you're obviously playing by yourself and everything is unlocked from the start.

So, it's like enabling most of the cheats from the previous games...

I was hoping by Sandbox mode, he meant: "Create a Region from Scratch" Mode

:(

Well, In my opinion, this is a sign of relief, that at least they are listening to us. Probably once I get the game, I'll mainly play on that since I really don't want to use the leaderboards or the challanges.

they can call it a sandbox mode but it's still something you can't access in the event that EA's servers are down.

The article says that you can still play sandbox mode in multiplayer. But if it is at all possible to save games locally and some people say that one can play the cities (but not use the main menu) while being disconnected from the servers, voilà the pathway to offline mode.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

I feel like I've read somewhere that the game would just boot you after 3 minutes or so of being disconnected

I tried this with the beta. It kicked me after 20 minutes.

I managed to play the beta for 50 minutes after it told me the SimCity servers were down (as it was the end of the beta)

Thanks to SimCity 4 and its community, and not any lily-livered attempt at a spin off.

Cities XL would have failed even without the SC4 community. It killed itself by being poorly made and unfinished.

I agree with a lot of whats been said above, I think that this "sandbox mode" is the closes we will ever get to an offline mode unfortunately.
