Sim City 4 stopped booting up

I am running Sim City 4 Deluxe version on Windows 7 32 bit

The game has stopped booting up for no apparent reason. When I try to launch the shortcut, the game icon appears on the taskbar for a few seconds then dissapears and the game doesn't start.

It has been running fine for a few weeks before this problem suddenly started.

The game is patched to the latest version.

I am running on a i5 laptop with an intel hd 3000

Any ideas what is causing this problem?

Is it still running? See if there is a simcity process running in task manager, sometimes (for me anyways) SimCity dosen't seem to quit.

You may have a zombie process. Open the task manager and if it is there, kill it. Failing that, boot your machine.

I have restarted the computer several times since then so that's not the problem

Run a virus scan and defrag your system. Also, try running the game in Windows XP (Service Pack 2) mode.

Have you tried going into the programs folder and running it from there?

Yes! This is probably a good idea. Run disk cleanup while you are at it.

I tried this but still nothing happens when I try to run it.

Try rolling your computer back to a System Restore point that was made before you started having trouble. It almost sounds like your registry has become corrupted, or like there's a file association problem. For as much as we like to think of this as simply a game, it is actually a computer program just like other programs.

Before you do anything drastic, try a cold boot. (That is, shut down, power off, power up)
