They could have easily implemented farms...

and they would have served a very important gameplay purpose by providing the food resource. Maxis claims that glassbox is a realistic city simulator with everything depicted visually in-game having an origin. Well Sims have to eat don't they? The farms would ship their crops to commercial markets or grocery stores and you would be able to of course watch the farmer's trucks doing this. Heck it could have been a city specialization all on its own with rewards like the farmer's market.

Maybe EA will release it as a micro-expansion DLC

I was really looking forward to farming as well. The issue may well have been one of space. If cities required food, then a set amount of land in every region would have to be a farming community. They may have felt such a hard limit was to constricting.

That being said, we don't really have any idea why they didn't add it so its not fair to speculate how they will proceed. Just remember though, if they add it to the game as a commidity, everyone would have to have it. They can't add it as a optional DLC. In fact, they cant even really put expansions into the game unless its a required expansion. Unless they plan to have multiple worlds. That leads me to believe that they will garner there income from unique regions and grand projects. Perhaps something cosmetic. Its all rather difficult due to the online nature of the game.

Farm land would occupy a large portion of the map. I doubt how can they implement it without increasing the city size... or they can have a great work "Giant Green House"

Farming should be outside of the city, part of the region when you first settle it. The role of your city in agriculture should be to provide things that the farms need to flourish. What you would do in your city is build things like a farmer's market, an agricultural college, processing plants, meatpacking, etc. that would provide the things the farmers need to grow their enterprise and produce more food. Since your city would act as the farming intermediary, with a Department of Agriculture attached to your city hall, farming would be your industry just as casinos or whatever else would be the industry of another city.

EA is very wel aware of FarmVille don't worry.

I have no proof for this but trust me they WILL make a farm DLC addon

I mean if even Blizzard implements something like Farmville in World of Warcraft (which they have, just youtube Halfhill)

Then EA will definately do something like that.

Anno 2070 had an autopatcher that added new features for everyone for free and downloaded all the DLC that was merely locked without a key (from purchasing it). Since Origin is rather similar to UPlay, I believe that having an Autopatcher add food and farms would only make sense. Without farms and agriculture, the least the developers had to do was have food be a resource imported from the market, produced by the AI at a low price.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

Just dawned on me that they could have the land develop into farming communities via a system like great projects. Hrmmmm not a bad idea at all!

Yes, Regional Minor Works have been suggested here and on the official forum.
