Question about tiles used by buildings in zones

Hi, what are the largest buildings (in terms of tiles used) in each zone? I used the control key to make huge zones with no roads but no buildings showed up at all. So why is this function available? Also is there a place where I can see a list of all the possible buildings including the information of how many tiles they use? I need this to optimize how I make my zones. Thank you.

The Lot Editor will allow you to view all of the buildings and all of the lot sizes they grow on. Here's a list of all the buildings, but it doesn't include lot sizes. There are about 600 buildings, and I'd say roughly 5 different sizes of lots they can grow on, so there are about 3,000 possible combinations.

The biggest I believe is 4x6 or maybe 5x6. It's possible to zone larger because custom buildings can be as big as the maker wants (some are 20 tiles wide).

Well, I am sure you are aware of lots of 3 x 3 and under. Large residential towers from maxis are never more than 4 x 4, and the tall towers can be up to 4 x 4 for commercial. Some commercial lots from maxis can be 5 x 5 or 6 x 6. Generally industrial lots are created from amorphous areas by the simulator, and some of these can have a large footprint.

BAT makers have no real limitation of the than something reasonable. Some lots I have downloaded recently have at least one profile for R$$ 5 x 5. One I have downloaded recently claims to be 3 x 8 but the game keeps breaking these lots up, so I have yet to see it. The limitation for BAT models is that they can't be exactly fit on an array of tiles. The simulator needs a tiny amount of margin apparently.

Basically, if you draw any custom zone (say 5x6), there must be sufficient demand for a building of that size to be built. As a general rule, larger sizes should only be zoned when this demand is high enough, and as you will notice from the list, these are occupied by apartments and high density skyscrapers. Smaller houses and shops will not fill the custom zones, unless their lot size is equivalent to the zone size.

As said above, custom zones are very useful for user-created lots. If you know the exact size of the lot, you can provide the required area of zoning. But the same principles of demand apply to custom lots as well.

The only exception is for industrial zones, where there are no defined segments. This means that any lot size can be built, although larger factories will only be constructed as per the demand.

Also it is worth noting that larger RCI buildings may also require high density zoning.

I'll try to keep a list of the buildings and their sizes I download as well, so I can plan out my zones, but sometimes I just drop random 2x3, 2x4, 2x5, 2x6, and combinations from there out 3x2, 4x3, 3x4, 5x4, 6x6, even occasionally all try a 7x8 or something odd to see if I have a building that I didn't write down, I didn't start until after my plugins was over 2GB, but once the buildings start growing, I'll fill in the gaps with parking lots, plazas, transportation, whatever you need for the area
