Tips for placing ferry terminals

Hey,

I've been really struggling trying to incorporate ferry terminals into my coastlines due to terrain being too steep.

The process I use is to flatten the ground down to the lowest available using the nifty 4x1 or 4x4 tool that i can't remember the name of. I then lift the ground using the Hole Digging lot raiser. This allows my seawalls to look right and allows me to use tunnels and sunken highways as it's just high enough but seems to leave it nearly impossible to place a terminal.

So does anybody have any tips that might help me get round this as i don't want to lower the land to a point where I can't use tunnels?

Thanks,

plastic

I see, you use the PEG CDK Leveler and a hole digger mod, and it can make your coastline become perfect for seawalls, tunnels, and sunken highway. Btw, it is not easy to plop a ferry terminal. It is tricky, but not impossible. Make the land become a bit steep, a bit eroded, straight, but don't make it become too steep. I also suggest you to use user-made ferry terminal which is easier to be plopped, like or Use the search tool and insert word 'Ferry Terminal' is also a good idea.

There's a leveling tool in Mayor and Godmode, easy to choose the size and create a perfect terrain for the terminals without changing anything else around. That is what I ALWAYS use.

It has become second nature for me now to fix my coast line using the mayor mode civil engineering tools. The PEG flattener doesn't always do what I want, and I've become rather good with the mayor mode levelling tool. This tool levels land, levels shore lines and straightens them out, carves shorelines, and can actually add new land-fill along the coast.

Remember that in order to use most of the lots you have to have the coast line aligned with the grid.

Generally it takes a light touch, and be prepared to change the radius using SHIFT+<numeric keys 1-9) to control the radius of action. You can also control the power of the tool by, at the same time you set the radius, pressing F1-F9 to set the power of the tool. F1 being the faintest touch. This little trick applies to all the engineering tools both mayor and god mode.

So what is the prefered shape to go for? Do I try and shape a 3x2 or 3x1 with a steep, squared drop-off or a more beachy type transition into the water?

I never knew that. Thanks for sharing the tip! Question: Just so I'm reading you correctly....are you saying you have to press the F1-F9 key while still holding down the Shift key?

    Beachy transition into water.

Yeah, the PEG Leveller is a cool tool to get a quick and easy fix point for your basic shoreline height... but everybody here is right, sooner or later you'll need to get savvy with the on-board terraforming tools (as described above)... For really detailed and intricate work you should not fear to go underwater, too - there is a mod (together with the Diagonal Bridge Enabler) that will allow you to remove the water (temporarily) without destroying your developments (unlike the setsealevel tool, which will always destroy at least some stuff)... It really pays off to smooth the terrain under water as well, to get good transitions from shallow to deeper water, clean seawalls and such...

When it comes to ferries - they can be really tricky, specially if you want them truly functional. Be prepared to put in some extra work on the terraforming... often you have to dig slightly deeper at the ferry landing spot...

Hold ctrl alt shift and click god mode. Use the soften tool to create nice soft edges

Be very careful if you have a developed city with the god mode tools. Earthquakes sometimes result.

To soften the edge of a shoreline, simple gently click across it with the levelling tool from the mayor mode menu. Do not drag.
