Running SimCity Classic 95 edition on Windows 7 64-bit

I felt like playing the original SimCity, so I tried installing it off of a CD-ROM of the Windows 95 version that I had. The first hurdle (the installer didn't want to run under 64-bit) was easily passed by copying the program files to a folder and playing it from there. After playing for a while I realised that I couldn't save my city, or load another city because the game would instantly crash when I tried to do either of these things.

Does anyone have any ideas for how I could remedy this problem?

I would recommend you download a version of SimCity Classic that works on Windows 7 64 bit. There are a few sites where you can get it. I think Gamers Gate might sell it?

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

I just had a look on GamersGate, and they did not have it unfortunately. I really like the windows version because it doesn't bother you with asking you to look for city names in a manual every so often to make sure it isn't pirated, and that it doesn't really have to run in an emulator.

I recall that the windows edition of SimCity 2000 had a similar problem, but it was solved with a patch of sorts. Unfortunately said patch was specific to SimCity 2000 and would not help here.

It's probably to do with the File interfaces that SCC uses. Older types (Like the Windows 3.1 based one used in SimTower, the Windows 95 one used in SCC and the Windows 98 Based one in SimCopter) have been deprecated and largely only work by sheer luck.

Have you tried running it in compatibility mode?

Yes, all compatability modes have been tried.

Are you running it as an administrator? I used to have a game where I couldn't save unless I was running it as administrator.

Happy to say that there has been a patch released for SimCity Deluxe that solves this exact issue.
