New Road Ideas: Double Deck Avenue/Elev. Highway?

I love highways, to be honest. I love it for it's convenient and it'll never report traffic jam, but planning highways for the last minute just to solve traffic problem in the middle of a well developed DT is really a pain... So I've been thinking that is that possible to mod a double-deck road with normal ground avenue and elevated highway like this picture? :uhm:%E5%B8%82%E6%B0%91%E5%A4%A7%E9%81%93.JPG250px-%E9%AB%98%E9%9B%84%E5%B8%82%E5%A4%A7%E4%B8%AD%E4%B8%80%E8%B7%AF.JPG

It's only an idea I had in my mind and I have no idea how to mod for sm4... So I wonder if anyone can actually help me turn this idea into reality? I think if we do, then this should be another way to solve traffic problem in an avenue as well as eye candy. :D

Such double-decker highways, I personally refer to them as "Double-stacked" highways to differentiate the difference between a double decker highway with both decks in different directions and double decker highways that's essentially like two-ply toilet paper.

That idea's been suggested to death time and time again, and it's one of the things that's simply impossible, even from a functional standpoint. I will reiterate the reasons why:

- There is no way to use a substitute network in the hopes that it would have greater capacity than it would have otherwise. This is the situation with DDRHW-4 right now. Instead of DDRHW-4 having the capacity of Rail (twice the capacity of RHW), it instead falls back to the capacity of Road. A DS highway would in turn have even less capacity than a single highway.

- There is no way to differentiate traffic between the upper deck and lower deck, no matter how much you try to offset the paths. Therefore, a DS highway will have traffic between both decks jump between the two, and will simply be no more than a single highway with double capacity.

The ultimate proof. Not gonna happen.

^^^

Hypothetically, what if the double stacked highway functioned like regular NWM? If you used the "Draw Paths" command for example, it would be like any other NWM but the upper/lower parts would be "just for show".

Just ignore the time it would take to model and all the instance IDs that would be hell to replace, is it possible in theory?

Still not worth it.

Also worth noting is this: Only a few places in the world (Philippines, but it's mostly southeast Asia) have double-stacked highways. Only a few places in the world have 16-lane highways. Only a few places (actually, one) in the world have 18-lane surface streets.

If it's not practical or not prevalent enough, then it's probably not ever gonna be added at all.

Functionality over Appearance. If it's not going to remotely function the way it appears it should, it's not worth putting it in.

That, and we'd get constant requests as to why one of the decks isn't usable.

As the people said above here, it's not going to happen due to bugged functionality...

Come to think of it, maybe I should make a sticky topic with all items that you should not request (since they are either already planned or simply impractical or impossible)

Read the Readme or drown in bugs and glitches; the choice is yours...

@Ganaram Inukshuk @jdenm8 @Mandelsoft

That's not what I meant. I understand that a "real" functional double stacked highway is impossible. I also understand that just modeling alone would be a nightmare.

I'm just wondering if it is possible, in theory only, to "fake it". Something that is exactly like the AVE-6, same intersections, same exact "path" when "Draw Paths" is turned on. Only difference is the median (the space in between) is a T21 mod with a nonfunctional, "just for looks" overpass on top of it.

In that case, yes, but not worth faking it. As stated above, function before aesthetics. It's not in the interest in the NAM Team to create things that are nonfunctional.
