Hi,

I've been playing the game for years and years now, and was just looking at using canals to spice things up a bit. I've been checking the uploaded content, but there's so many and so many different packs I'm finding it a bit difficult to work out what's essential, what pack belongs with which, what pack works with what other pack, and generally which set I should be downloading.

I've looked at BSC Brick Canals by SimGoober and this set seems to be the best so far in my opinion.

But other than this, I was just wondering:

Which you would recommend?

Are the canals functional or not?

And what, if any, complications are there in getting them to work with existing game water, and bridging over them with game roads/rail or with NAM/RHW roads.

Thanks for you help :)

To better understand the use of the canal I suggest you read this links.

:read: - Mod Canal Addon (CAN-AM)

:read: - CAN-AM Multiple Canal Mod

:read: - Show Canal stuff

With respect to functionality on the NAM can rest easy. There are many puzzle pieces to build bridges over the canals.

Goober's canals is an excellent choice. Among all sets I tried, it is in my opinion the most complete and flexible system, it is the only one to offer both narrow width and diagonal sections. Pegasus did also some nice sets with lots of interesting addons but sadly there's no diagonals. Another canals you might consider are Moonlight's creations: the japanese style canal lots (CAN-AM compatible) and the suburban canals (my favorite). You can find them here

Usually making your network interact with canals is no problem as long as you have overhangings lots, and most of the canal sets have that.

Well actually there are many more plugins on channel eye-candy simply a brief search in the download sites to find several breeders

But with respect to a functional and compatibility of textures only some breeders may be cited despite all efforts by BarbyW to reconcile the various plugins.

SimGoober; Callagrafx ; Diggis .

I have been trying to decide on a set to go with also and have been searching the different options. Doesn't Oppie's canal set have both diags and the ability to make narrow widths also?

Thanks for your help guys! Especially pointing out that CAN-AM mod, I didn't know about that.

I'm now installing SimGoober's brick canal base set, and expansion pack, reinstalling Network Addon Mod to tell it I have his canals, and installing the CAN-AM multiple canal ferry and freight ports. Chasing all of the expansion packs is a little tedious though I must say! But I'm sure will be worth it.

I hope I'm doing everything I need to, to have fully functioning canals.

I'm still not entirely sure how they/if they link up with game rivers and game water yet though....

There is no way to directly connect canals to game water so that they'll be functional. Game water traffic will not use canals since canals are simply textures, not "real" game water. You can give the appearance of canal-to-water transitions by using such things as waterfalls, dams, and locks. There are some who have demonstrated smooth transitions by using specific water mods and some terraforming. You might check out these examples: (Link) (Link) (Link).
