Reason you go to message boards?

Why do you use forums/message boards?

I use them not only because of things I like but I have a hard time socializing in real life, resulting in not having too many friends, so I take some things I learn on message boards and apply it to real life, not everything though. Not sure why I'm not very social, may be due to the fact I have Asperger's and ADHD, or just that my interests are too specific, I don't know.

Well, I like to share my experiences in this game and acquire more information about it, and other items in the off topic area. I am retired and live alone and am not very mobile.

Out of boredom, cravings for information, and a supplement to my social life...

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

As an introvert... I'm not likely to put myself into new social situations. The anonymity of the internet makes it easier to interact with other people. I also like the casual pace of conversations on a message board... there isn't a need to come up with something to say right away (I hate telephone calls :P).

At this point, out of habit. It's something I've been doing for so long that it would just feel weird to stop.

The first forum I ever joined was the SC3000 official forum. Which I joined because it was pretty much the only way I could discuss SimCity with other fans (I didn't and still don't know any in real life outside of my family). It was also a means of downloading usermade content and getting help/advice with the game. When SC4 came out I joined that forum as well and then I found my way from there to here... where in the years since I've become a pillar of the community.

To some degree I get what you say about having a hard time socializing: I have Asperger's as well and the two of us are not the only ones here. It's a common thread on a lot of message boards. Typing messages to people is considerably less stressful and easier than having to look them in the eye and talk to them, at least to some degree. But one is not a substitute for the other and using the internet as an alternative to having an actual social life is not healthy. You can get the best of both worlds by using the internet as a means to meet people who you have things in common with, who you then later meet up with face to face - I've made quite a few friends and even an ex-girlfriend in this way. But of course, some caution and common sense must be applied when doing so.

I go to message boards to find information and to socialize with everyone :)

I also once went to message boards to ask for help, but now I rarely do D:

I go to the message boards because I need information, share more information and socialize.

Is there another reason?

I'm a member of a overclocking forum because I enjoy building computers and it's a valuable resource to have access when I need a question answered. I'm a member here because of STEX. To be honest the only thing that started me posting in this forum tonight is boredom.... you'd think looking after nine puppies would be fun but at 02:52 I'm sleepy and they're sleeping. Oh, and the mother of the puppies is laying down next to you farting all night long, it's not as much fun as you'd think.
