Its so hard to tell the terrain of a map exactly just by looking at the pics. I've been wanting to do a sf style region for a while, with all the nice hills, if anyone knows of any maps like so please let me know, thanks.

Interesting idea, but more definition is needed. What makes the terrain more suitable to science fiction?

SF style hills - San Francisco style hills.

Just look at all the maps down there and try them one by one, by SF style map I would think of smooth. rolling hills, with some water and other stuff. Most SC4 maps are based on real locations as it's quite hard to make one yourself, so probably look for maps based around the Mediterranean sea or maps based around the Pacific coast.

down where? You mean just browse through the maps on stex? The thing is, its hard to see those hills show up in the pictures, because they're not as obvious as the mountains. Even on the sf map you can barely see the hills in the pics. I guess I could go ahead and download each one and open it to get a better look, but that's what I was trying to avoid by starting this thread. I'll check out the mediteranean maps a little closer, thanks

Basically I'm looking for a "hilly" region. I'm not worried about a coast since I can easily make that myself, but its very hard to make realistic hills for me which is why I want something that already comes with a nice "rolling hills" terrain.

I bet there's quite a few maps that are actually of San Francisco on the STEX. Just search for them.

yes there's a few, but I actually don't want to use the sf map. Since I"m already going to use sf as the inspiration of building the city I'd rather use a different map so I don't end up copying sf too much, I want it to have a lot of my own original thoughts and ideas

Ah! To me, sf means science fiction. SF is more likely to be San Francisco. Aren't abbreviations wonderful.

If you want to do your own map, try the You can control the heights and depths, the smoothness, etc. While it randomly generates the map, you can keep generating until you get one you like, then, after rendering it, you can hand terraform it to your heart's content. When you get what you want, save the entire region for future use by copying the city folder to some backup area.

On of the nice things about LD, is that if you work on the gray-scale map, you can read it back in and see how you are doing without rendering it.

I believe there is an NHP map for San Francisco, I don't know the URL however. You can check the STEX and the LEX though. Other hilly maps that I recommend (since I'm using them-lol) would be the Virginia pack (for Roanoke--very hilly area), Atlanta (a surprisingly very hilly city SE of the Blue Ridge Mtns), and the Baltimore region...which has hills in the northern/western parts of the map. You could also check out the Greenville, SC map, there is a big mountain in the middle of the map, and hilly terrain surrounding it.

Maps based on locations around Alaska, British Columbia, Appalachians, Mediterranean Sea, Southern Brazil and Phillipines have those kind of hills. If you want to know if the map suits you, the SC4M image should have some sea(blue/cyan), flat lands(dark green), hills(light green) and probably small mountains(light brown).
